DirtDaze 2024 - Green Mountain Grinder on F800GS

Touratech Dirtdaze 2024 - Today we're riding a full-day guided ride called the Green Mountain Grinder. It was a great ~115 mile loop with a mix of pavement, dirt roads, and class 4/6 roads. Riding on my 2013 BMW F800GS. It was super fun, I had a blast! We had a great group of riders. Hope you enjoy 👍

Touratech Dirtdaze 2024 - Today we're riding a custom route, which ended up being a combination of parts of the Eagle Hollow route and the New England Sampler route. It was a great ~80 mile loop with a mix of pavement, dirt roads, and class 4/6 roads. Riding on my 2013 BMW F800GS. It was an awesome day, I had a blast! Hope you enjoy 👍

Taking a demo ride on the BMW R1300GS thanks to Max BMW! I hadn't got a chance to ride it during their demo time slot, but they were nice enough to let me take it out solo after the demos were over because they knew I really wanted to try it out. Props to the guys at Max!

Taking a demo ride on the BMW F900GS thanks to Max BMW! Overall it felt pretty decent. Good: - Plenty of power - Ergonomics are great, both sitting and standing - Looks awesome - Felt nimble - Ride modes Bad: - Fairly jerky when getting on and off the trottle - Expensive - Enduro models are hard to come by - Luggage setups could get interesting - Fuel range could be a concern, similar to my F800GS

Riding on one of the guided rides at the 2024 DirtDaze rally called Eagle Hollow. It was a great 60 mile loop with a mix of pavement, dirt roads, and class 4/6 roads. Riding on my BMW G650 X-Challenge. Had a great time!
Clearing and Setting Up a Dirtbike Skills Training Area

Today we're clearing out an area at Jason's house to use as a training area for us to work on our skills. We had to drop some trees, clear some brush, and then setup a few logs and cones for us to play around with. We also did some bushwhacking in his woods to scope out some single track possibilities! Rained the night before, as well as on the drive up there. Single track was pretty slippery! Got to check out a friend's new Beta 200RR 🎉 Trying out some new camera settings: -Field of view to highest setting -Recorded at 4K 60fps instead of the normal 4K 30fps that I have been using previously

What’s your helmet set up and what camera are you using?
@@Insaiyanrider I'm rocking a Leatt 3.5 helmet, DJI Action 4 camera, and a DJI helmet chin mount that just secures on with a couple velcro straps. For more ADV oriented riding I use an Arai XD4 with a ride tech stick on chin mount 👍
@@KittenMittensADV which do you prefer for Moto blogging helmet set up I just got the DJI4 so I’m trying to go more into the offroading community as opposed to the street I got a beta 500 rrs
@@Insaiyanrider if I'm doing ADV stuff I'll wear the Arai. For dirt I'll wear the Leatt. I haven't got fancy enough to wear a dedicated mic to pick up my voice, I just use the mic built in to the dji camera. My riding buddies and I all have Cardos so soon I want to try to figure out how to incorporate the comms in my videos, but it's a work in progress.

Thanks for the video. I was looking for an Enduro model and could not find one. I was also concerned about range and the rear section for luggage. I ended up buying the Tiger 900 Rally Pro, very happy with it after 900 miles. But I do like the looks and am a BMW fan, probably would have bought it if I could have found Enduro.
It's a shame the Enduro model isn't more widely available. The guy at Max was saying that some of the parts they use to build the enduros are backordered, so that's why you can't find them. Glad you like the Tiger!
Something tells me you enjoyed that ride more than the other bikes. I could hear you smiling through the helmet. Wouldn’t it be fun to torture that bike on a canyon road?

@@blairweiss that was Damon Bradshaw and his son. Pretty sure yamaha just gave them a couple demo bikes to use. It was a work of art watching them go through the rest of the course!

Last time I test rode a Yamaha at Americade and I got yelled at for standing on the pegs lol. I still bought the T7 though 😅

@@KittenMittensADV I have about 1600 miles on it with half of that being off-road, purchased July 18. Have been out of commission for the last three weeks because of a broken tibia though 😭. Can’t wait to get back on the bike
I signed up to try this event out... But I gave up the dual-sport riding and converted the DRz to enduro, I decided not to go.

@@KittenMittensADV Its so capable in the trails and hard stuff, sometimes I forget what I'm riding. I only feel the extra weight when I have to pick it up....a lot 😉

You got your comm mic connected into the camera or is it just picking that up naturally?
I don't, my voice is just being picked up by the DJI cam's mic. I've been trying to figure out how to record the Cardo comms to integrate into my videos, but I haven't been able to find a good method for it yet. The Cardo app has a recording feature, but I'm pretty sure you have to keep your phone unlocked and screen on for that to work, so that's not very practical. The alternative would likely be to add a mic that's tied in line with the headphone output from the Cardo. I don't really want more crap in my helmet, though.

@@victorp5491 good thing I'm not on a boxer! Although they are kind of nice because they don't fall over very far because they just lean over on the cylinder heads

I love the rough and more technical trails in NH, this looks awesome! Nice work out there! How do you like the Husqvarna in this setting? Been looking at 450's for trails or single track where the T7 is too big, I keep coming back to the YZ450FX. Stiffer suspension than Kawi or Honda and the consistently snappy/torquey throttle response at low rpm or even top end are nice. I'm not familiar with Husqvarna's bikes at all though, but I'm curious after watching you tackle this type of terrain and seeing the bike handle it with ease!
@@Bacondew the FE450 is a great bike. Mine is a 2019 and I just picked it up off fb this spring. It's essentially equivalent to KTM's 450 xcf-w, just with white plastic. The suspension is phenomenal. The motor can be a little bit spicy in the tight technical single track, but I've got a wifi connected GET ECU for it and can change the map from my phone while out riding. I've been keeping it in the "mud" map, which kinda tames it down a bit. I think the ideal bike for the single track in this video would probably be like a 200 or 300 two stroke, like a Husky TE300. Or maybe even just a step down from mine to a FE350. Either way, I love the bike and it's not going anywhere any time soon!
@@KittenMittensADV You can tune the ECU on the fly with your phone?? That's sick! Super handy having presets for different conditions at your fingertips. Having a habanero for an engine is fantastic info. A snappy throttle/motor is the #1 thing I look for. Love balancing clutch play with instant torque availability *burnt clutch crying in the corner* in technical terrain but I agree it can be a bit spicy in situations like this for sure, a fun challenge though! You're right the FE450 & 450XCF are damn twins! KTM bought Husqvarna motors couple years ago right?🤔Great to hear the suspension is phenomenal! At 6'2" 250lbs most bikes feel too soft for my thicc ass🍑🤣100% agree with you, a 200-300 would be perfect here. Thank you for all the info and your thoughts on the bike! @@Bacondew Yes sir! It has a little wifi dongle that lives under the seat lol. I'm also 6' 2", roughly 200lb and I re-sprung the rear shock to a 51 N/mm spring because the other one was too soft. Feels great now. Not sure if that one would work for you at 250 lbs. There's a table somewhere in the manual that shows the weight range for each size spring. Also, I just dropped a video of a me going through all the mods on the bike 🙂
That's a workout. My 701 would be a lot to handle on those trails.

Appreciate the video. I looked up the Tomatoe Trail and road some of it last weekend. It was pretty fun and always great to find a new trail. I will have a video up in a couple of days on the ride.

Watching you on the f800gs has me consider this as another adventure bike. I have been looking at the ktm 890 adv r but I did not realize how capable the 800 is
@@masbaoutdoors5353 it's a great bike! I've had it for I think 3 years now. It does need quite a lot of work from the factory to make it off road capable, but luckily the previous owner took most of the hit of that on my bike. It's got upgraded fork springs, a touratech rear shock, Excel front wheel (stock front wheel bends like butter), steering stabilizer, skid plate, crash bars, hand guards, and probably a few things I'm forgetting. My biggest complaint is the fuel range. I can only go like 160 miles before I start to worry about finding a gas station. That's one place where the adventure model shines. I love the bike, though. It fits me perfectly and I can't see myself ever selling it at this point.
Out in the Jaffrey area and recently got a T7, definitely going to have to do this loop soon! Thinking about putting a Dunlop 908 on the rear and 606 on the front, what are you running for tires?
@@Bacondew Ooo the T7 is a sweet bike! I'm rocking Tusk D-sport tires on the GS. For the price (like $130 for a set) I am thoroughly impressed. I've put probably close to 3000 miles on them in the last few months, including a NE BDR 6-day trip, and they still have some life left. The front is actually doing worse than the rear, it's quite cupped/scalloped. The rear is quite loud on pavement, but I wear earplugs so it doesn't really bother me. I've already got a new set in the garage ready to be spooned on when the time comes.

@@Bacondew I was essentially going for the most aggressive DOT tires that would work on the bike 😀 Normally, the bike takes a 150 width rear, but Tusk doesn't offer the dsport in that size so I had to compromise with the 130.
That f800gs did well.
