If fully enlightened Buddhas can still act in the world and help other (relatively speaking of course) beings achieve enlightenment, then what is the point of the Bodhisatvas? Why refrain from full enlightenment as a Buddha, and remain in Samsara as a Bodhisatva to help other beings, if full Buddhas can do that anyway? Thank you 🙏🏻
Very interesting. So how does the Mahayana multiverse relate to the six realms of rebirth from the Pali Canon? Are we of the six realms always born within these six realms? Or can we be born in other “cosmoses”? Are the Pure Lands outside our six realms (it seems they must be if Abhitaba may be from another cosmos), and if so, are they a kind of way of being reborn outside the six realms, even if we can’t get to other cosmoses? Many thanks 🙏🏻
Thank you very much. Isn’t this pretty much the same thing that is in The Heart Sutra? Everything is empty, including the dharma teachings?
This one person started out being robed as a monk in Pure Land, Tendai, and Shingon, before rebelling against all three, went to look at the Lotus Sutra in a different light, instead of from an esoteric level, but rather a more pragmatic level. He went with his father one morning on 28th of April 1253 on the summit of Kyosamisan, As he was looking east towards the rising sun, he proceeded to for the first time ever, recite the title of the Saddharma Pundarika Sutra (Lotus Sutra) in Japanese: (Namu) Myoho Renge Kyo, his new name from Rencho became Nichiren. I hope you do, if you haven't done already, some videos on the Nichiren Tradition (other than Sokagakkai a cult). Nichiren had a very interesting but rocky history.
not "spell", but a function of a systematic "vibratory-divininity-Universe" ontology. Wow, western civilizational "how this is used" rather than "how my divorce-culture perverted mind perceives" (at the most superficial chirsto-centrist perspective) . The iliad is bad mahabarata; the bible was written by egypts slaves -- and thats the jewish "greek" foundation of western literature. Whatevs, moving beyond western nonsense perspective in 2025.
Firstly, Sokagakkai (創価学会) the 'soka' has in romaji only ONE k, (not two 'k's like 'sokka')! Also in Japan there are 37 genuine Nichiren sects. Sokagakkai in the 1930's had originally been the 'hokke-kyo' (法華経) or lay organisation of their once parent sect Nichiren Shoshu (日蓮正宗) the second oldest Nichiren sect. The current sect - the oldest and largest Nichiren sect currently in Japan - is (the only one that was actually around during Nichiren's lifetime) is Nichiren Shu (日蓮宗). I am currently a Nichiren Shu Buddhist myself. There is also Nichiren Hokke (日蓮法華), Shoshinkai (少心会), Hokke-Shu (法華宗) et al. SGI is not too well received as they have in 1991for misconduct been in 1991 formally excommunicated (acting as a financial and political cult, seeking money to finance their own since 1964 political party Komeito). I would not recommend SGI (Sokagakkai 創価学会, outside of Japan as Soka Gakkai International, hence SGI) since 1975) to anyone. SGI has unfortunately diluted and corrupted 'Nichiren Buddhism' for their own financial and political gain, as a tool of 'exotic' enticement for gaslighting their unsuspecting members for their hard earned money. (I am an ex-SGI member, I have found out the hard way)! NOT good!
Why are you using Hindu and Indian interchangeably? All Hindus aren't Indian. Hindu gods are Hindu gods, not Indian gods. Also, Siddhartha Gautam wasn't an Indian prince. Infact, he was born in what is today Nepal.
Well, Hindu gods do come from India, so they are Indian. He didn’t say this is the only tradition in India. In terms of Buddha being from Nepal, well yes, sort of, based on today’s borders and nation states. But, you are applying modern nation states to ancient times where that wasn’t how the term India was used. It wasn’t one kingdom or state. It was a name for the whole region. It had many kingdoms and republics within it, and included areas that are now countries separate to the country called India. But there was no country called India back then. So I think it is reasonable to say it either way.
Time to throw the British word "Buddhism" into the trash. Let us replace it with "Buddha Dharma."
Your anecdote about being punched by the Zen master reminds me of Samuel Johnson's famous refutation of Bishop Berkeley's theory of immaterialism. "I shall never forget the alacrity with which Johnson answered, striking his foot with mighty force against a large stone, till he rebounded from it,- 'I refute it thus.'"
This was a great introduction, thanks!
Thank you for letting us know. I'm glad you liked Prof. Proffitt's talk.
谢谢!阿弥陀佛!
nichiren daishonin Buddhism is the best religion ever. many people are ignorant to understand it..
Thank you so much for sharing your opinion on Nichiren.
Sorry bro. Every time i hear you say Shinron, i hear Shenron which is the wish dragon from Dragon Ball.😅
Thank you for sharing this with us.
Thank you for your heartwarming story. Namu Amida Butsu
Hello. I am practincing in Nichiren Shoshu since 1970 Without doupt and fearing. Nichiren Shu was suposed to protect Nichiren Daishonin's teachings but inspite after Nichiren Daishonin passed away Shu chanced their woreship to Buddha. Nichiren Shoshu since 1290 Nikko Shonin the first priets at Shoshu protected The Gohonzon and teachings from it. There are many Shu temples here in Japan but a diffrend teachings from them. So as many after Nichiren sects. Nichiren Shu did not excist and was not a temple in Nichiren Shonin's lifetime. Shu temples started after around 200 years later so as After Nichiren sects later. Nichiren Shoshu and Shu have the same written Nichiren Mandala and doctrines but replace the Mandala to woreship Buddha after the war. "Nichiren sects do not understand the essence of the object of woreship. For example, the Nichiren Shu sect at Mt. Minobu appears completely confused concerning its object of woreship, sometimes using statues of Shakyamuni, sometimes using mandalas, or chanting the daimoku to goddess Kishimojin or even foxes .They sell mandalas as souvenirs to visitors. The situation is simalar with Rissho Kosei a long time after by a Shu follower named Nikkyo Iwano and became the leader started a group Rissho Kosei Kai. And Reiyukai. Rissho Kosei Kai has changed its object of woreship five or six times Reiyukai, who until recently had revered the posthumous Buddist names of to woreshipping a statue of Shakyamuni. There are also several Nichiren Sects such as Kempon Hokke Shu, who make there own counterfeit copies of Gohonzons that the Daishonin inscribed . Soka Gakkai Due to refusal of leaders to correctly follow the teachings of Nichiren Shoshu. The only true religion that has any power in this world at this time is Nichiren Shoshu . Its doctrins are perfectly logical and consistent, and the experiences of many people who have faith in this great Buddishm and who have overcome their negative karma are proof of this. Now here in Japan so many many left Soka Gakkai and came back to Shoshu again the last 15 years now. I am so happy all my life with my big family. Shu and after sects dont spread Nichiren Daishonin's teachings here in Japan Soka Gakkai too. . Shoshu are in a big movement kosenruffu now. And We are so calm and peacefull than ever. Thankyou Japan.🧑🦳
Thank you so much for sharing so that others can learn.
Perfectly timed video! Thanks 😊 Very nicely presented! Would love to see some more videos on Korean Buddhism in the future. The only thing I would nuance is 19:15 when speaking about gong'an. It's hwadu practice, (called ganwha seon), and not gong'an practice, that is the preeminent practice of Korean Seon. In fact, ganwha seon is the only officially sanctioned meditative practice of the Jogye Order of Korean Seon. Unlike in Japanese Zen, it is not common for lay students or monastics to have a close relationship or frequent meetings with their teacher, if they have one. Some confusion exists around this issue in the West due to Seung Sahn introducing Japanese Rinzai-style koan practice and frequent meetings between teacher and students into his Kwan Um Zen School. He started this practice after his Western students, who were already familiar with Japanese Zen, expressed interest in and expected this style of teaching from him. You mention hwadu at 23:50 when speaking about Jinul, but it is this and not gong-an that is the central practice in Korean Seon.
Thank you for your comments and insight.
Dr. Proffit, I request a lecture on Vietnamese Buddhism. Thank you. Sweet beard.
Really interesting
Thank you for this. I lived in a Korean Zen (Soen) center as a younger man. The same school you're familiar with.
OH SNAP - another one, right after I start eye-ing Korean language(always wanted to learn Japanese - though I "have" been on a Sanskrit binge - then went more ancient(and other variants or changes of Nippongo and such - gotta read that Kojiki and such), and I keep hearing of Korean's influence(whereas I knew Chinese was a major part). Ah, the language side is likely unending, in wonderful tangles. Anyhow, time to watch the video xD
Phenomenal presentation
A Profit?
Unsurpassed wisdom is the ultimate wisdom or perfection of wisdom which is no wisdom which is letting go of all to reveal the original emptiness!
😂
What is the best book of Lotus Sutra in Buddhism ?
Hello! I really like the volume by Lopez and Stone, Two Buddhas Seated Side by Side for a chapter by chapter overview. And I am rather partial to the Teiser edited version by Hurvitz. This one has a translation of the Chinese with reference to interesting and different passages in the Sanskrit.
@aaronproffitt3225 Sir Thankyou so much for your kind help. Its a great help for me as I love Shakyamuni Tathagata Buddha & want to follow his path to achieve enlightenment. NAM MYO HO RENGE KYO 🙏🏻 Om Mani Padme Hum 🙏🏻
Thank you, Prof. Aaron Proffitt. Deep metta to you
Excellent overview of historical and philosophical elements of this subject. Thank you. A lot covered directly and succinctly. 😇
So, one attains "salvation" (if you will) by "believing" and "trusting" in the NAME of Amithaba! I can see how this idea got grafted into the Christian doctrine in Alexandria from the missionary work of the Buddhists way back then. The Mystery Religion that became "Christianity" merely picked up the idea of benig "saved by a name" from Pure Land Buddhist Monks, not to mention the very idea of missionary work AND the entire system of Monks, Nuns, and Monestaries (and praying with strings of beads). My 2 Cents....
Boring
15:30 I've never met a Theravada monk who accepted the Bodhisattva vow. It's a trap.
Hmm...
Awesome professor! Keep up the good work!
Really appreciate your work.
I am glad you liked it. We will be posting new videos.
Thank you so much!! 🙏
You're so welcome!
Thank you so much! I'd love to see more videos on Mahayana Buddhism please. I appreciate it 🙏
Thank you for your good suggestion
Thank you 🙏.....
I am grateful
I wish that there are more Sanskrit to English translations and as well as transliterations instead of relying and using the Chinese ones which is difficult to understand and recite. I am more intuned to Indian languages than Chinese. LOLS
Thanks for your interesting lecture. Highly appreciated. One comment on the fire pujas in Hinduism an Japan. In Tibetan Buddhism it’s a often used ritual for different purposes.
Thank you professor 🫶🙏❤️
So informative thank you 🙏
Sorry for late reply, thank you
Thank you for your presentation. Whose translation of the Lotus Sutra are you using? Thank you
I hope you received the answer from Prof. Proffitt.
As a member of the Soka Gakkai, the Gohonzon you have in the video is being disrespected, if you would remove it from the video. It’s the Gohonzon issued by the Soka Gakkai. The Bodhisatvas of the Earth and they appear in our day and age of the Latter Dayb of the law who promised to save those who are befuddled. Please consider this request as that from a Bodhisattva Buddha.
Thank you for letting us know.
Is there any use of attaining enlightenment if there are millions of people outside the temples without food and shelter and millions of worth treasure inside the temples and here the place of enlightenment the Mahabodhi temple is in control of Hindus and Buddha is silent on the crime and all real Buddhist texts are in Pali pakit and not sanskrit.Sanskrit came after many centuries after Buddha The main problem with westerners is that they study what Brahmins teach them and don't search real buddhism.
Good point. We must save all before enlightenment.
The two are not mutually exclusive. “We” can become enlightened while doing what we can to help others at the same time. You have a valid point with respect to how money (treasure) is being spent in the religious world where incredibly elaborate and expensive temples, churches, synagogues, and mosques are built all over the world costing billions of dollars, and for what purpose? Do we really need a 300 acre “monastery” costing hundreds of millions of dollars? Or, could we make do with something much simpler and utilitarian? It’s somewhat hypocritical to have lavish accommodations for the “clerics” when the poor are living on the street and starving. Perhaps someday, we will find a middle way.
I am trying to learn more about the religion of my people. A lot of people from Mongolia are Buddhist some way or another, although there are a lot of Shamanists here too. Thank you!
Oh, thank you for sharing.

Thank you

Nah
Killing Buddha means remove every obstacles that comes in your path. Either it may be Buddha himself.
Hmm...
Very interesting!

Thank you so very much Professor Proffitt🙌🏼 this was the absulte best explanation of Sunyata and no self (imho) 🙏🏼 . A very abstract but essentical concept you've clarified in a short lecture. Very greatful 🤗
