Triumph Sprint RS 955i Long Term

Although very dated and never the height of desirable motorcycles, the humble RS has proven to be a sound secondhand buy. Parts are plentiful thanks to the modular manufacturing approach Triumph took at the time. The engine is very closely related to all the 955i engines but doesn't have the the fancy Nikasil liners of the Daytona 955i which enabled more power to be put through the engine. Ipic...

E5 Fuel, es Bueno!

Getting fueled up for the next ride out. I like to do it in advance as time is usually against me on a ride so if everything is done before, so much the better. As my bike is 20 years old I use E5 to make sure the plastic tank and all the other bits and bobs don't degrade with the higher ethanol content of E10. Today's confectionery if choice is the Kinder Bueno.

😂 You live life on the edge, wives have eyes everywhere 🤣. The 1000 is great. Couldn't be happier. It ticks my boxes of not being too expensive and all the parts being "tried and true" along with plenty of spares. As long as you have a decent inside leg and you're reasonably strong for low speed work you should be fine. I dropped mine recently due to loosing balance. Luckily the crash bars saved it from damage. If all I did was narrow twisty roads and I was a smaller person I might look to the 650.

There was an article about a 1st gen DL 1000 that had 400,000 plus miles on it. Original engine. Supposedly the odometer stops at 200K miles, so he replaced it and went thru another one. This guy rode the hell out of it. 100 miles commute each day for years plus long trips.. I've personally seen a DL650 that had 300 k miles on it. Original engine. The new Pstrom might be better off road, but it's engine will never last 1/2 as long.

Had a yellow 2000 RS when I was in Australia, where I lived at the time. It was great. A little over 400km tank range, and decent at everything. Not superb at any one thing, but a good all rounder. I felt it actually made me a better rider because it was so neutral. I want another one, but in orange this time. My only complaints were the seat, which grew teeth for me after 30 minutes, and the engine had a minor fluctuation when doing a steady speed.

I went by my local Moto Repair Shop to make a offer on one of their used trade-ins, a Big Brawny Bandit 1200S , but it got sold so I reluctantly considered from two remaining ADV 1000's , a Ducati Multistrada & a Vstrom. While the Duc was tempting I decided to test ride Suzuki's ADV UNDERDOG & fell in Serious Like! It already had a older Slip Streamer Touring Windscreen with laminar lip , a comfortable Sargent Seat & rear-set Bar Risers. The upright riding position practically begs for more miles. The real revelation though, was in the Canyons where the extra broad torque curve makes Mountain passes quickly flow past & the ample suspension provides capable handling allowing me to keep pace with sport bikes in the Twisties. I couldn't resist such a "well rounded package" for such a "steal of a deal" so I gladly added it to my garage. It's probably the best all-around street bike deal on the planet! I've added "peg droppers" & Delkevic S.S. Oval Mufflers to it.

Go for 2002 or later as there is a problem with the sprag starter clutch. earlier models had the clutch in the middle of the engine and a real pain to change. I have a 2002 st and replaced the clutch in an hour. The clutch has an upgrade to a much larger unit, cost £350.00 in 2020, Another tip is to always keep the battery fully charged, excessive wear on the sprag is caused by low battery when starting.

The Sprint RS, is the "Lost Triumph" so glad some one did a video. I have a 2004 with the single sided swing arm and TOR carbon silencer. The sound turns heads like a Ducati does at one half the price and none of the maintenance. Mine weighs with a full tank of fuel 490lbs. I love mine over the Sprint ST 955i. For a 58" wheel base it does really well in the corners and at above 100 mph high way, its stable and quiet. If you compare the geometry and power to weight to the Sprint ST 1050, its identical in geometry, same power and 40lbs wet weight lighter. Its not a 425 lbs / 175hp super bike but it gets you close enough for the average rider. Lots of seat of the pants power for my needs.

I have the Sprint RS 955i (120bhp) and a Daytona 955i (150bhp) and I can honestly say the sprint is more fun to ride, it has bags of power all within legal road speeds, and the daytona you have to rev it a bt more to get the same thrills, and you doing 20 miles an hour more than you would be on the sprint. Even though the power is more on the daytona, it seems to lack the fun-punch the sprint gives. And the sprint does like to have it engne reved. BTW the engine managment light could be your fuel sender unit, it goes bad and throws a code, and even if you get a new one they seem to have two types which is eacy to mix up with different impeadences..

I owned this bike for almost 3 years. Paid 2500$ CDN pre-Covid for a 2000 model year in mint condition. I put 35 000kms in less than 3 years. It's a lovely bike and with proper tuning, an exhaust and more agressive sprockets, it's a completely different animal. My friends couldn't get ahead with their modern MT09s and Z1000. It's a very malleable machine. I could wear the tires to the edges and move at ludicrous speeds with great stability or I could short shift and cruise along with my girlfriend at the back. Even did some mild offroading and dirt roads rather comfortably with it. Most impressive, no matter how hard you ride it, it would always maintain a low fuel consumption, baffling. Now I ride a KTM 990 SMT because I needed a more rugged bike but I will always remember the Sprint RS.

Hi Phil, sounds like the RS did you a great service there. I am very pleased with mine, if I can't "upgrade" next year I'll still be happy with what I have

Thanks for uploading. I bought one of these last year. I'm fairly new to biking and this is my first big bike but it's great. Cheap to buy, not too intimidating but it's capable well beyond my abilities so it's ideal to grow in to and learn the craft. Would highly recommend a well looked after one. As for the looks, I find the belly pans make a big improvement.

Thank you and I'm dreadfully sorry about the quality of my videos. A better one should be on the way. Congrats on the purchase. I agree with all your points. I hope to change it next year but if I can't afford it I'll still have plenty of enjoyment with this one.
