June 2021: Only just came across this. The Manawatu Gorge Road closed in 2017 due to slipping and geological movement. The Saddle Road, north of the Gorge and the Pahiatua Track to the south have been the only alternative routes across the ranges from the Manawatu to the southern Hawkes Bay since then. The roads have been improved but need constant maintenance and have strict speed limits. A new four-lane highway is to be built on the Saddle Road side of the Gorge and construction has just begun but is still some years from completion.

What a landscape, it is of an outstanding beauty, even in the rain. In Europe, we know little about the "Jake Break". Can you use it permanently as long as you go downhill?

usually use the same gear going down as if your climbing that hill, so you go up in 10th, so you go down in 10th or so

i think its the alturnative route that links the manawatu to the hawks bay. manawatu gorge is under repair
