1959 Johnson JW-15 3hp Outboard Motor First Start In 50 Years
I bought this 1959 Johnson JW-15 3hp from the son of the original owner for €40. It was always used on the same lake, and it's a nice fresh water motor. It hasn't run since the mid 1970's or earlier.
I gave it a full tune up, including new coils, condensers, oiler wick, plug wires, spark plugs, (cleaned & reused the original points), carb kit, drive shaft o-ring, plug washers, and fresh gear oil (the oil that came out looked like used black motor oil).
I was the first one to lift the flywheel since 1959, as the bolts securing the gas tank to the bracket were still sealed to the tank with factory paint. I was very surprised to find out the impeller is still looking new, knowing for a fact it must be 50+ years old. The vanes aren't bent and are still flexible, with no cracks whatsoever! For now I'm leaving it in there, as it pumps plenty of water.
Furthermore, every inch and every part has been thoroughly cleaned, gasket sealing compound was used where needed, and every moving part has been lubed with BRP Tripple-Guard grease or moly lube.
Compression tested at 78 & 80 psi, not bad after 50 years of sitting.
I still need to finish it up; putting back on the lower cowling, adjusting the carburetor etc.

I acquired this Yamaha 2A in a package deal with a Suzuki DT2. I ended up paying only 10€/$ for each motor. Both motors have very few hours on them. The 2A model is the successor of the P-45 model, which was launched in 1964. I don't know precisely when the 2A got introduced, but I think it was around 1972. Both models are nearly identical, with only some minor improvements on the 2A. There was...

Last year, I acquired this 1992 Yamaha 4AC. The previous owner only used it for about 5 hours each year. It came with the original manual and tool kit. Not a bad deal for €90 I would say. Love that flip top! I have a 2002 Yamaha 2hp that looks almost identical other than it having a recoil. I guess their thinking was “why mess with a good thing”…
@GearHeadJP I guess they did the same thing as Evinrude/Johnson with their 3, 5.5, and 6hp models. If it works, don't mess with it. The only thing I strongly dislike on these Yamaha's is the way the impeller is serviced. You need to open up the gearcase and spill oil everywhere in order to get to the impeller. It's a horrible design. Thanks for watching!

Do they perform much differently with the 1hp change ?
@kody5779 It does make a difference, but if your boat isn't too big, 4hp will do the job. It will al depend on your usage and boat.
@@VintageOutboardMan would it be possible to fit 5hp powerhead onto the 4hp leg? Same bolt patterns?
@kody5779 I believe so, yes, but I'm not 100% sure.
Im looking to buy a 4hp this month. Queensland laws allow you to navigate vessel with no rego no license if 4hp or under. My question is, is there a pilot or main jet swap, or something for the 4hp engine to get the most power from it. Possibly a restrictor?
@kody5779 Hi there. Not that I know, unfortunately. The 5hp gets its power advantage mainly from its bigger engine displacement. You could of course experiment with different propeller pitches and see what works best. Thanks for watching.
So the 5 HP does have bigger cylinders or something does it? I know with the smaller 2.5 mercury you can put out restrictor after the carb to easily make it essentially 3.3 HP I thought that was possibly the case with these 4 and 5 HP engines you have
I must have missed where you said they were different engine displacements, my bad
You could try getting a bigger jet for the carburetor and testing top speeds before and after
Sweet..it works ...
What’s that ticking noise? I have same motor and is it normal?
This is just the normal sound of a 1 cylinder 2 stroke Yamaha. Of course, you can also hear it shaking a bit in the barrel.

I'd love to know the year of my 4hp Yamaha 2-stroke. I'm in the UK. Label shows the following: 4ACMH 6E0 L 360034 S. It over revs with the throttle at the start position, then slows down when given full choke. Any idea what's wrong?
Hi, is the S part of the number before it, or is the S located separately in the right lower corner of the model tag? It should be a small stamped letter, not a painted one. And is your motor a blue or a grey one?
The S is in the bottom right hand corner of the model tag. The engine cover is grey, but may have faded in the Lake District sun. The upper/lower casings and transom clamp are medium grey colour. @@VintageOutboardMan
@bryanfitzgerald8046 Okay, yours is a 2001 model. I can only think of two things regarding the high idle speed. Either your throttle cable is way too tight, and the throttle won't rest on the idle stop screw (or the idle speed screw is screwed in way too far), or the idle mixture screw is set way too lean. Check the throttle adjustment first. If that checks out, start the motor and try to turn the mixture screw counterclockwise to richen the mixture and see if this lowers the rpm
It is probably printed on the spark plug leed if you check, my yamaha 4hp outboard is 1983 and it says it on the spark plug leed
Thanks. I tried/checked your suggestions, but no difference. Ended up by a new Recmar carb for £105. About same price as a genuine Yamaha carb service kit! Running sweetly now 😊

How many bars of compression must it have?
Typically the 4 hp have slightly higher compression than the 5 hp models. Most of the times they have 160-165 psi (the 5 hp should have around 135-140 psi).

Hi, how set up pulser coil low speed on yamaha 4ac?
What do you mean with setting up the pulser coil? If you mean the ignition system, you can't do any adjustments on that other than adjusting the spark plug gap
@@VintageOutboardMan I mean the distance between the pulser coil and the magnet, the magnet has 2 or 3 small blocks on it that pass by the pulser coil, I'm wondering if they are allowed to touch the pulser coil or there must be a certain distance between
@@ajlin9832 Unfortunately, I do not know those specs of that particular motor. However, lots of motors use a 0.2 mm gap.

Hi, how set up pulser coil low speed on yamaha 4ac?
I have the same one on my boat, do you happen to know what what kind and how many qts of oil it takes?
You mean the capacity of the gearbox? That takes 9 fl oz or 266 ml of 80w90 or 90w marine gear oil. If you mean the oil mix ratio, this is a 50:1 mix motor. The older 5.5hp are 16:1-24:1 depending of the build year.
hey, do you have any idea how to find a replacement condenser? the original is not available. Want to replace it to be sure. But i cant find any details of this condenser. One store couldnt find them either. I might try suzuki aswell directly
Hey, unfortunately I do not know where to get one. I was looking into it as well, but only found a couple on Marktplaats. You could indeed try directly at Suzuki. I believe the Yamaha 2hp condenser isn't available anymore either. However, I think that one might fit the Suzuki too. Is yours broken or do you just want to change it just to be sure?
@@VintageOutboardMan i just want to change it to be sure. I think if the condenser is faulty i might damage the new breaker points. I sent an email to suzuki. Hoping they provide something. These were great little OMC 2-stroke outboards; I grew up with these things, and my first was an Evinrude 1979 6HP. As long as you changed the impeller, plugs and lower gearcase lube every few years they would run forever at WOT with minimal maintenance. The modern heavy, complex 4-strokes do not even start to compare with these nimble, bulletproof OMC premix 2-strokes of old.

hey nice outboard, looks great. I have this one too, and i love it. Can i ask which spark plug you used for it? the recommended ngk b4hs is discontinued sadly. Im not sure which one is safe and good to use. 10 dollar is a steal by the way. I run it on 100:1 ratio by the way, iirc thats the recommended ratio. 50:1 was for first time period. Curious about your knowledge.
Hey, the correct spark plug for this motor is the BR5HS, not the B4HS. However, sometimes manufacturers reccomended different spark plug for different countries or climates. Mine has a sticker on it that states the BR5HS should be used. This plug is readily available. You want to set the plug gap at 0.6mm or .023''. The mix ratio is 50:1 for models prior to 1987 and 100:1 for 1987 and later models. The early models had a white cowl, then they switched to a silver one (like mine) and after that they switched to a black cowl. Those also had electronic ignition and an adjustable idle screw I believe. I will make a comparison video of the DT2 and a Yamaha 2A in the near future. The Yamaha is a way nicer motor, however the impeller is not nearly as easy to change as on the Suzuki. I like them both and they are both very reliable motors. Thanks for watching!
@@VintageOutboardMan Thank you very much. I ordered the parts today and checked the plug gap. It had a great running sound. Sadly itś slowingdown after a while and shuts off. But some cooling time helps. Probably the cooling isn´t sufficient anymore, and needs more oil to get better. Will check the cooling system.
@@ReasonanceHead I would definitely check out the water pump impeller. It could also be an ignition problem, but those systems are usually pretty reliable.
@@VintageOutboardMan you were right, the impeller was broken. Decides to take apart everything an clean it up, so cooling is optimal. Do you know where the vent is for the gear oil? On some models its straight above, but mine doesnt seem to have one. The carberator has two rings to make it smaller and cylinder has a iron part in it to make the opening smaller. Wonder if there is more hp there? Or is it for other design reasons?
@@ReasonanceHead I'm glad you solved the problem. Hopefully it didn't suffer any damage from overheating. You're right about the gearcase. The earlier models only had 1 screw (mine as well). Later models had 2 screws, like most outboards. You just drain the oil by taking out that screw and you fill it by laying it on its side and pouring in the fresh oil. It takes approximately 40cc of oil. You can't use a pump as there is no vent. Th carburetor isn't upgradable as far as I know. All models were 2hp except the latest version, that one has 2.2hp, but it has a different carburetor I believe.
Thank you for this video. I have a yamaha that I now kan date to between -84 and -91. Very usefull information.
You're welcome. There is a small (and sometimes hard to read) stamped letter on the ID plate. This letter will tell the exact year your motor was built. However, there is a USA and a European date code chart. These two will tell you two different years for the same letter. If you send me this letter and tell me on which continent you are, I will tell you the year your motor was built.
@@VintageOutboardMan Thank you for the video. I have a yamaha 4hp, built in Japan, and the serial number is S 210939. I live in France. Can you give me the year of my motor ? Thanks

I found the exact same one in the skip the other day. It ran sometimes just like yours. After some messing about I found that gastube from the tank to the carb was bad and replaced it. It runs very good now. It was sucking air probably.
I already tested for spark with a spark tester and it showed no spark directly on the coil. With old outboards it's the exact same. They will run one last time with cracked coils, but when they warm up they quit and then they're dead. I think the same happened to this Dolmar. But yeah, if I'll replace the coil someday, I will give the carb a good ultrasonic clean too :)
I think you would not be able to start with bad coil... did you find exact reason? I have same model with similar symptoms, there was ignition cable damaged under crank case and spark goes to body instead of spark plug. Still have some more issues but it is getting better
I never got around to fix the problem, but the cable itself was just fine. I think the coil just died. They aren't cheap, but it would be worth it cause it's a fine saw.
@@VintageOutboardMan with a bad coil it wouldn't run like it did at all. You might find cheap ones on aliepress if youre stubborn to replace it. I say it's a fuel problem, so nasty carb, tubes or filters
@@broekspijp41 After all, the coil did turn out to be the problem. It happens a lot actually. When a coil goes bad, it will often run one last time and when it warms up it dies.
