Thirty something brothers are living together under the rule of St. Benedict in the most eastern part of Uganda. They were founded only a good twenty-five years ago, more as an accident of history than as the result of careful planning.
Tororo and its surroundings were an empty space in which outlaws and poor pastoralist found a refuge. The founding father Neusiger bought a vast plot of land. He wanted the monastery to be a genuine African settlement. He foresaw a great future and started with the realisation of a first part of his master plan. Monastic cells in the form of Roundhouses appeared, built of concrete and roofed with tin plates. Brothers came in and the priory of Christ the King made its first steps onwards a challenging road of growth, decline, crisis and renewed vitality. Today it is an established but still fresh and developing oasis of spiritual, pastoral and human activity inspired by the age long wisdom of the Benedictine Order and its way of life.
