The last flight of my DG600 5m RC glider
Bought in 1998 from Bruno Rihm (now “Paritech”, located in South Germany), the DG600 followed me to Singapore, Switzerland and even Cairo, where local RC club members took off from the taxiway of a real airport (prior permission required by the tower :) .
A beautiful scale plane with a 5,15m wingspan, it weighs 7,5kg, incl. a Hacker C50-10L 6,7:1 turning a 20x13 RFM prop via a FES, powered by 6Sx4000mAh, such that the plane takes off from a trolley within ca. 25m. (I’m OK with the trolley running off to the left and did not give right rudder input as this keeps the runway clear for landing - if you make it back).
Before each takeoff - as with any of my planes - I check each control surface and the motor-prop set-up. Still, one airbrake decided to quit on me during the flight. The fight (starting at 1:30 on the video) lasted 1 long minute while I was trying again and again to stabilise the plane with sudden engine boosts, aileron and elevator inputs - but to no avail. The sudden, severe downward moves seem to indicate that something else may have contributed to the eventual crash (?).
Incidentally, I had a small camera attached to my cap, so you can join me in reliving those painful final moments. (The video is a bit jerky because I had to zoom-in during the editing stage).
PS: Same place, same time on a different day with another 5m plane… - the airbrakes work, a touch of left rudder input to compensate for some cross wind, a bit more right aileron could have helped at the end as well, but smooth enough in anyway. RC-Life goes on...

Clips from the start near the Spitzbühl restaurant, the flight near the Schlern mountain, a "limbo" approach, followed by the eventual landing. Camera was moun...

Good morning Eckad:), aua, thats horribel, Sorry too you thats maad:(. I fly also some oldscool sailplain and Plains. They are 25 to 30 Years old:) Hmm Yust a question? But what you think? When the problem with your air brake started, I would have taken emergency landing measures straight away. I would have used the first or second low approach as a landing option straight away! What I noticed is that while this problem was occurring you suddenly lost a lot of altitude and also over the side and then suddenly the nose went up too much, like in a stall. I assume that your old vintage plane doesn't have any flaps installed? So just ailerons, side, elevator, air brake? If so, this doesn't fit with a one-sided air brake! My two old vintage gliders, the K6 and Pilatus B4, are set up the same way... ailerons, side, elevator, air brake. If only one air brake were to extend and get stuck, the glider should really only lose speed very slowly and steer slightly to the other side, which should be easy to compensate for with the rudder in the first case. Otherwise, like you, I would have turned on the motor, gained altitude, extended both brake flaps/air brake and initiated a steeper approach angle with a little more speed for landing. If necessary, turn on the motor slightly until shortly before landing to maintain flight stability. Your glider is still healing very strangely. Is it possible that the elevator/servo had a problem? Including a shift in the center of gravity? The battery came loose? All the best anyway and I wish you lots of sunshine for your sailing.

At least you have sense of humor! All part of the hobby. Hope you will have another DG. Great planes. I have a DG600 5,2 mtr span with FES wheel and selfstart option. All the best!
