Zündapp KS600 1940 running and riding
Surviving Zündapp KS600 o.h.v. boxer twin, built in 1940, engine running. Riding filmed around the former Fliegerhorst Deelen, after 1945 a dump for surplus vehicles, allied and german as well.
A great bike to ride, fast in its day and, alltough of complicated design, still "autobahnfest". Fitted with a 28,5 mm camshaft (nr 25) the sound is not comparable with that of a BMW, it sounds more like the aggressive growl of a cammy british twin.
Originaly designed for the civilian market of 1938 by Richard Küchen as a fast "Bahnburner" for sidecar and solo use, most were drawn in by the Wehrmacht as a successor of the side-valve 500 and 800 cc models. Later during the war the engine was also adapted for use as a stationary source of power (Stamo) in large generators, winches etc.
After 1949 a few hundred KS600's, built from stocked parts that survived the bomb attacks on the Nürnberg factory, were combined with Steib sidecars for goverment use in the then young BRD. Only the petrol tanks and sadles differed from the pre-war design. The four speed gearbox is not fitted with gear wheels as usual but with double row chains and sprockets, one set for every gear, a typical design feature of Richard Küchen. The engine and gearbox were later succesfully used until 1958 in the KS601 "Grüne Elefant".

    Thanks for adding the video! I also have a KS600 that I rode in the 2022 Cross Country Chase along Rt. 66, and wanted to ask about your center stand. Were you able to make it work with header pipes that have a crossover pipe, or did you have to go with the ones without the crossover? Thanks in advance!

    Great bike; sounds sweet. The KS600 is a massively underated machine; much more useable than the K800 and a lot faster.

    • @Garfieldonwheels

      Fitted are open absorption silencers, made by Mistral in aluminium. These keep the engine a bit cooler than the stainless steel originals wich are quite restrictive and heavy. Sound on the road is, allthough not strictly legal, far from anti-social as long as you 'go with the flow'. Open it up on accelleration and thunder will roll, loud and claer ;-)

      @@Garfieldonwheels Nice, my way of thinking also. Did you re-map? I can't see if your injected. I think not?

    • @Garfieldonwheels
      @Garfieldonwheels 2 роки тому

      @@DustyVisorMotorcycles No, there 's no injection. It is the version with the 40 mm Delorto carburettors. When delivered according the EU legislation the bike has a rather inflexible charactre; ample bottom and short of midrange power, then a real punch from 5000 rpm. Not so pleasant in normal traffic. That's why I changed the silencers and re-jetted the carbs. Engine power is now delivered from about 3500 rpm upwards, without losing too much at top rpm. Yet it still demands to be ridden in its own way; a bit like a classic with a close ratio gearbox, due to the long overall gear ratio. This bike was never meant to potter in peace so to say.

      Would be curious to know what she made on the dyno. Mine has stock Airbox with K&N and diffent pipes and crossover. What mains and slides are you running and in what climate? For some reason they are a bit fussy on carburation compared with a LM, higher tune maybe. I had mine dialled in for a hot climate now need to re-do it for Ireland....

    Not too sure getting off the bike is wise when using a dyno. It needs the rider's weight on the suspension and tyres..... even on a rolling road dyno, mate.

      Hello sivi8272, this sidecar once served in the Soviet-Russian army. It has a permanently driven sidecar wheel and a differential with a special blocking device. These were in use from 1964 until about 1978. The model is called MW 750. It's civil counterpart is the Dnepr MT12, built from 1978 until 1984, wich differs only in not having the blocking device and military equipment. The MW 750 was succeeded by the MW 650, a modernised version with a 650 ohv engine, wich had its civil counterpart called Dnepr MT16. The military versions were much better built than the civilian ones. With a complete rear drive unit, rearfork and sidecar chassis with drive unit it is possible to convert any Dnepr (not Ural!!) model to a driven sidecar combination. The more recent Urals also have a driven sidecar wheel, allthough not permanently driven through a differential; it is only meant for use in heavy terrain. If you can spend a small fortune, you can think of a German WW2 BMW R75 or Zündapp KS750 sidecar combination. These are technically superior to the Russian bikes, but will cost you at least 6 or 7 times more. Good luck.
