Here is my hoard of Viking History, Norse Mythology (and some Dungeons and Dragons) content. Either created by myself with support from special guest authors and academics on a range of Norse topics as wide as Bifrost the rainbow bridge; captured streams of Norse-inspired game play (fun and mayhem guaranteed) from my Twitch channel, or geeky DnD videos promoting the wonderful content from Role and Play Press (of which I'm an Official Brand Affiliate).
Valhalla Conversations (Eps.9) - Worthy Women of Saga and Myth
Join me for Episode 9 of Valhalla Conversations, which is a special collaborative podcast episode as I am joined by the two hosts of ‘Shield Maiden: @WomenoftheNorseWorldPodcast Kim Barton and Johanna Wittenberg. In this episode we each share our particular favourite female figure from Norse sagas and history, and equally Norse legends and mythology.
I chose Audr/Unnr the Deep Minded, a woman who single handidly led her family from danger to peaceful settlement in Iceland. Followed up by Freya, Goddess of War, Love and Seidr Magic.
Kim chose Lagertha, and we learn more about what the sagas say, not the Netflix drama. Followed up with Skarthi, the Jotun/Giant, who demanded a husband in recompense for the Gods killing her father.
Johanna chose Queen Asa of an ununified Norway, who features as her female protagonist in her now 6 going on 7 book series, followed up with the half-corpse goddess, Hel, who ruled Helheim.
Kim and Johanna are both authors of historical fiction (and some fantasy) set in the Viking Age, and each has a strong female protagonist to explore and navigate the culture and society of the time.
Kim and Johanna, combined forces over their shared fascination and interest women’s lives, experiences, challenges and successes and roles during the Viking Age and so began their own podcast. To date they have recorded 24 episodes covering an amazing range and depth of women in Viking history and mythology. From goddesses to spirits to legends and sagas, historical artefacts, archaeology, religious roles, domestic roles, Queens to Abbesses, Warriors to Valkyries. These two have covered a LOT and I have always learned something from every single episode I’ve listened to so far.

Jorvik Viking Festival 2017 Finale - Bloodaxe vs Jorvik
The saga ...were no more works of historical truth than modern fantasy works..so people taking and extending the story is no less valid. The saga were perhaps "based" on true events.. But ultimately were tales told around fires for entertainment. Apart from that ( some were tellings of family history..so yeah there is that)..they needed no more truth than the saga of the wars in the stars or the trek of Kirk.. Some inside into the period may.be fossilised within. And those traces though lacking the poetry of the saga are perhaps hhe real gold
Thanks for watching Jason and good points. The saga of such characters are in the grey area between truth and fiction. But from what research I've read it is noteworthy that the original manuscript refers to Atilla and thus gives it a thin grounding to a particular area in time and location related to the activity of the Hunnish empire and the conflicts therein. You may find my Valhalla Conversations Episode with Kate Heartfield of interest as she explained how she did a careful balance between historical context but mythical characters.
Awesome, Becky! I’m really impressed with this paper and with a life-long interest in Valkyries, I’m looking forward to updating my TBR list!
Thanks so much 🙏🏻 I may just be sharing my crazy theories and fan based observations into the Ginungagap of UA-cam but it feels good to actually put my thoughts into words and research it. I will do my best to keep working on this, between being a parent and my part-time job... Alas this doesn't stuff doesn't exactly pay for the bills.
What a great discussion and excellent panel
Thank you very much! I really enjoyed this discussion and I hope you enjoyed the series too, if you have already watched it. If not please do so! There is so much in it I'd need a day to talk about it all.
Lovely to rediscover this! I was the voice of Halfdan Ragnarson, we recorded everything in a studio in advance, so great to see how it all came together on the night! Thank you for uploading!
You're welcome! I enjoyed every single one of the Jorvik Finale's that followed this very cinematic like style. Alas covid, and parenting has prevented me from returning (oh and the dismal state of train travel to and from Huddersfield). I can only hope they keep going strong so I can take my kids to one, one day.
Like only to Einar's song. He's amazing as always.
It was an amazing year that Einar got to be involved in Jorvik Viking Festival.
From Vikings 🖤
Yeah the very same.
Where was this.
This was performed outside the Castle Museum in York, North Yorkshire. For the Jorvik Viking Festival.
Thanks for posting these videos, I too was taking part so nice to see what was going on as was hard to see while fighting.
Really good videos. I was taking part in this so it's good to see it from a spectators point of view as well :)
Seeing his performance next week at jorvik.
Man that's absolutely amazing
Love Einar, great music. I missed this festival because my son was being born. Didn't realise I missed this appearance!
Hold on, is this the guy who does the voice acting for the Marauders in Total War: Warhammer? He sounds like it.
Amazing how this is both more historically accurate and with better looking production values than Vikings and Last Kingdom put together.
Was soll das dämliche Gekreische?
Was that a common buzzard?
Just watched your vid to see whether it matched the 4 birds I saw and heard circling today and it does! So we have 4(+) buzzards in North Herts!
