ADIRONDACK DAYS
Приєднався 25 тра 2021
The Adirondack Days UA-cam channel is meant for outdoor enthusiasts. I myself have a passion for the outdoors, still a Boy Scout at heart I enjoy anything from hiking, plant identification, bush-crafting, animal identification, hunting, fishing, tracking etc., these passions will always be a part of my life.
This channel is an ongoing experiment constantly evolving and growing as my skill set becomes more advanced. I would like the opportunity to grow with all of you sharing tips and tricks with others in our outdoor community. Adirondack Days serves as a networking platform for learning these rare and sometimes forgotten valuable skills.

Keeping it simple! The Down and Dirty Debris Hut
Переглядів 1962 місяці тому
The amount of debris that you put on top of the debris hut depends on what season you are in. With colder weather, make sure you’re enclosed like a cocoon this could be dome like or it could be a pyramid place at least put 2 to 3 feet of debris on top of your shelter👍👍.

The white flowers will fall with the berries taking their place in the late summer. Berries ripen red and fall producing the said babies. Not sure if like their cousins, actual ginseng, if they as well take 18 months alone to even germinate??
You are absolutely correct! And directly underneath it in front and to the right are in fact babies poppin' up! Not the seng of dig, yet just as beautiful!
sorry fella I have 1 better u take the plastic ink tube out spin about 3 or 4 times as much thread around the plastic bit inside remember u have the full length of the ink tube to rap around then about 2 inches from top put ya needles it works and put top bk on and ya thread is gonna be 100% waterproof cannot even salt water destroys twine
😂😂😂😂😂😊
Calm waters!!!
Hey, thank you so much for that comment. I was figuring that would be a problem. Wanting to get a Grayle they’re just so darn expensive. but thanks for that comment.
Good video. Thanks.
Thanks I appreciate it. Can’t wait to get out again already itching to get out.
Good video. You are correct about the Sawyer and freezing weather - freezing while the media is wet shatters it, leaving it non-functional (it will pass water, but no longer filters). Solution is simple - shake it out and keep it in your bedroll at night, an inner pocket on your body during the day.
Thank you !!! Great little hack
this is actually genius!
These take forever
Yeah sometimes all depends on how elaborate you want to make it, this took me roughly an hour to
Excellent recommendations I have considered eliminating a few other items since I have shot the video. Usually, I will also keep that pack and back of my car if I decide to just go camping for the night so I kind of have a hybrid scenario going on there but thank you so much. It would eliminate a lot of weight.
If I had to hike 40 to 100 miles the logical ranges of an hour-long drive. At the fastest speed hiking. It should be about 20 miles a day. I would not have taken as much as you. In some areas. While I would have carried more in others. 1. You do not need as many lighters, and candles, You do not need candles. You could use 1 lighter, 1 rod. It would be fine. You really do not need the rod. Just two lighters would save you a ton of weight. With a flashlight. That is talking about redundancy. 2. One knife, one cheap lightweight trawl. The axe really is a maybe. A multi-tool is a great idea. The thing is. The multi-tool is wiser than a knife. You will not need a saw. So one knife, one multi-tool, and one trowel. Again many long-distance hikers carry a lot less. 3. Cloths, socks, 5 pairs. 5 pairs of underwear. Good comfortable shoes running shoes, or trail running shoes. They are the same thing. These shoes need to fit you perfectly. 1 Rain jacket, or umbrella, or poncho. 4. A sleeping system. Bivy sack with a mat that will keep you off the ground while you sleep hidden in a bush. 5. Medical kit with needle and thread. The medical kit should have stuff for minor cuts, over-the-counter pain meds, caffeine pills, and things that are good for your feet. Blister fixing stuff. 6. 1 32 ounces of water with the water purify pills. 7. The rest of your space should be 100% food. You will want a ton of calories because you are burning many calories while walking. Even mix in multivitamin pills. I am going to guess that you will need 2000 calories a day. With a cooking kit. OR Cash and your phone will also fix this. Call a cab. Have them drive you home. bUTwHaTIF?!???!?!??!? You have failed your selves during COVID-19.
Thank you very much for the reply. I have taken a few things out since the video has been uploaded. This pack is also a hybrid pack in the event that I feel like going hiking or camping. It’s always in my car so I use it for both things, but your recommendations are duly noted and I will be adding a few more items that you have listed in the comments. Thank you.
@@jo-qf3rv Try a bike that you can fold up and fit in your trunk.
If you make some improvements let me know !!!
Just a suggestion. Consider carrying 3 or 4 mustard packets. If your home is a 1 hour drive away, that could be a 2 or 3 day walk and you may get muscle cramps. Crazy as it sounds, mustard helps relieve muscle cramps. Just a thought. Thx for the video.
Never thought of that, great idea
@@tkctkk6196 I have pouches of olives and pickles. Does the same thing. I'm not fond of mustard.
Brand of that pack?
Falco pack
www.amazon.com/Military-Tactical-Backpack-Men-Waterproof/dp/B07TYWTJW2
That looks like a great little kit! I might make something like that for my pack.
Suggest checking out ultralight backpacking kits. You could save a lot of weight.
I’ve definitely thought about it. This pack is close to 25 pounds as of right now it’s a bit much but I do have some necessary things in there. My ride to work has quite a bit of country back roads.
@@jo-qf3rv By definition, backpacking gear is designed for the backcountry.
Rule of threes: You can survive 3 minutes without air, 3 hours in bad conditions without shelter, 3 days without water, & 3 weeks without food (unless you are very ripped).
Yes sir !!! Definitely have some surplus on my person !!!! Thank you for the response
3 weeks without food? Good luck with that.
@Wastelander13 I didn't say it would be fun, just that you can survive. I always carry a minimum of 2 days of extra food when I'm hiking, even short day hikes, mostly snacks, meal replacement bars, and emergency food.
@@jo-qf3rv Me too!
That’s a Nite Ize CamJam from Bass Pro Shop $10 that’s tightening that tarp line.
Awesome thank you!!!! Works great
Visegrips/w/ wire cutter
Nice !!! Could come in quite handy
I carry a wind resistant umbrella.
You live in my favorite place in the world. Plan to spend the summer of '26 up there again. Lake Placid/Saranac Lake Area. Gorgeous!
Nothing beats it !!!
Subscribed. Hope to see many more videos on your channel.
Thank you!!! I usually post new videos once a week either on a Sunday or a Monday. I appreciate it, if you have any feedback, let me know.
A sillcock key, zipties, small baggies, mirror, headlamp, bug spray, glow sticks, duct tape,
NICE!!!
If you want to ditch the metal shovel, Fiskars makes strong plastic trowels, sometimes they show up at dollar stores. There are other trowels ultralight hikers use but they cost about $20. I have two but the edges are not hand friendly. Everything is a compromise.
Good idea !!! I will look into that where would I begin looking for one thank you
@@jo-qf3rvI got my fiskars trowels at walmart, in the gardening section. I have seen them in other gardening sections at hardware stores too.
Wrap the edges of the handle with duct tape. New ultralight trowels incluye Leave No Trace poop kits and don't have the sharp edges. Thinking about getting one
Sure is thank you, praise God
Blessed landscape
How do you keep the candle from melting in your car? It's in the 90s in the summer here and the car is 120+
I haven’t really had that many problems with it believe or not. It’s in my trunk so no greenhouse effect I guess but I’ve checked out it from time to time and it seems fine
You got great gear in there! I like what you've got. Did you put the First Aid kit yourself or is it a store bought one?
Custom made boo boo kit lol
@@jo-qf3rv any must have items that you think should be carried that most of the store bought ones won't have?
Believe it or not I put some Elmers nontoxic school glue in my pack. It’s clear I use that for cuts believe it or not. That stuff works really good. You could use superglue, but I’m not really keen on all the chemicals, but I have cut myself before and put some of that glue on there and believe it or not it works really good lol
@@jo-qf3rv I'll have to try that!
Nice little kit Joe! Shoot me a text or something so we can get together soon. If you want I’ve been turning hobo handlines. Lmk I’ll hook you up with one. I’m taking Sunday off work and me and the kids will be out on the west branch camped out for a few days. You’re welcome to paddle out to us.
Sweet I will look at the schedule!!!
Nice and simple
Very very interesting 🧐
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh that’s amazing. How blessed!!!!!Be Well!
Thank you, blessed indeed !!!!!
Right !!!
Feel like skipping a rock or two!
Natures cool !!!
Sure is!!!
Mark your aspirin/ibuprofin expiration date on your container, if it’s not in the original. They do expire.
Sure thing, yes a must!!! However if you come across some willow you can use the inner bark as a substitute!!!
@@syn4057 some medications last longer than others, and some last well past their stamped expiration. Rule of thumb is that heat and humidity shorten the viability of medications.
I would pack what I would take on an ultralight backpacking trip. I'm not sawing wood and building a lean-to. I've got a butane stove, 1 person tent and sleeping bag, you can get by with an MRE or two. Congratulations being the few who aren't arming themselves to the teeth like some mall ninja who's gonna fight Walking Dead rejects.
Thank you for the response, I thought about bringing sterno cans and at one point I had two in there, my defense carry is pepper spray lol
I have a fully packed 18L day hike pack in my car at all times. It has all the essentials. Not quite an ultralight backpack kit, but I could survive for several days. Emergency bivy, extra large emergency blanket, titanium 700ml mug, ultralight titanium emergency esbit stove & fuel, ultralight poncho that converts to a tarp, packable water resistant jacket, IFAK with my daily meds, emergency food, tea bags, Hydration powders, map, compass, small fire making kit (lighter, ferro, a few storm matches, small amount of tinder), headlamp, small flashlight, SAK, water purification pen & purification tabs, titanium water bottle, poop kit, whistle, paper, sharpie, cordage, tiny sewing kit, zipties, duct tape, super glue, hero clip, trekking poles. On top of that, in my daily carry sling, I have a power bank and a couple of cables, meal replacement bars & high protein snacks, and pepper spray, among other things. The whole thing weighs about 7# with the trekking poles. I also have a car emergency kit with electronic jumper/tire pump, jumper cables, flares, Chem lights, wool blanket, the usual stuff, and an EMT FAK. I'm not am EMT, but I have lots of friends who are EMTs and RNs. I do have wilderness first aid and strongly recommend it to everyone. I always have a keyring flashlight, Gerber Dime, small folding knife, and a flash drive with all my important info/copies of documents. I generally have at least 2 knives on me at all times, one keyring and one larger. Skip the hatchet. I've been backpacking and camping for over 50 years and never needed one. On the other hand, my Huntsman SAK has a decent saw blade that's handled anything I've needed. For being in the woods, it handles most everything and what it doesn't (pliers, mostly) the Dime does. Both together weigh less than a large multitool. Your pack is going to be very heavy if you have to hike 30-60 miles. Strongly suggest checking out ultralight backpacking gear. BTW - I grew up un the northern tip of the Catskills and hiked the Adirondacks as a teenager and early 20- something. You're going to want enough cordage (at least 50') to do a bear hang to get your pack off the ground and away from critters.

Lovely tip man 👏👏
I keep my carry on luggage in the trunk containing full change of clothes, shoes, and a blanket. Pre packed backpack goes in also. Good use for a carry on size luggage instead of taking up closet space. Also keep a milk crate with jumper cables, car fluids, and drinking water.
Oh yeah, I got all that stuff too, as a matter of fact, not too long ago, there was a tree limb that fell across the road, and it was too heavy to pull, and I was able to use that silky saw to help the guy cut and drag it off the road thank you!!!
Like the way you set the bag up. I have a similar bag for my son (in college). Will be using your ideas to lighten it up a bit
Awesome thank you for your comment!!!! Let me know what you end up putting in it
You may already have this in your med kit but if not, I'd add moleskin tape and maybe a trial size bottle of powder for chafing. Unless you normally walk alot-there are parts of your body that are going to thank you for having these preps! What about a tin with a small fishing kit?
I have a cool little fishing kit that I made if it’s in your pocket, but I’ll put a video up on it. I made it with duct tape and Velcro neat thank you so much for the comments. I’ll add some mole skin for sure great idea!!!!
