Magic Lantern RAW to DNG in Davinci Resolve | Canon EOS 650D/t4i
I'm going to show you my workflow of using Magic Lantern RAW DNG files in Davinci Resolve. All of the clips were shot using the Canon EOS 650D/T4i.
I always had a hard time with retaining the highlights using DNG files from MLV RAW. I would bring down the highlights but the mids and shadows would get pulled creating a very dark looking image. After messing with the Color Management Settings, I figured out a way to lower the highlights and recover them.

Longwood Gardens is such a great place to stroll around. It was a cloudy day with a little bit of sun. I had a lot of fun going around recording these scenes. Some of the scene do look really soft. I've always wanted to record the beach using Magic Lantern. Canon 650D/T4i w/ Magic Lantern looks amazing. Hi, thank you for this video. I don't understand something. I thought that when exporting to Cdng the edits done with the MLV app were not applied.
The edits that were done in MLV app were RAW correction edits. They are applied to CDNG when exported from MLV app.

Raw was exported as DNG file in MVLapp and graded in Davinci Resolve

Thanks a lot for Video.. Please advise how to work correctly with RAW files from Canon M camera? All videos do it differently... My head is already spinning. I realized the best way to upload such files in Cinema DNG Uncompressed format But everyone on UA-cam shows their way different. Some make a preset for some reason on Arrie Alexa, then unload to Davinci and there put Camera Raw - Clip... But not everyone uses Color Space Transform node. Please advise me how to work best with a RAW file with the Canon M. Should I just not touch anything in MLV app unload as Cinema DNG Uncompressed and then in Davinci only apply Camera Raw? Then what about Node - Color Space Transform? In this case, it's no longer Log video and it's not needed, right? Or we need to use Node - Color Space Transform? There is Color Space in project settings itself - is it the same node or something else? I'm sorry if it's a bit rambling... my question is probably too complicated for a full-blown video lesson)))

Hi, in some cases after recording in MLV the files show ZERO KB. How can I restore the correct size? Thanks for your advice.

can we shoot almost 30 seconds in 1080 p without crop in 650 d now a days ?
650d can do 1726x976 (16:9) 3x3 binning with very little crop (x1.6 vs x1.61) for more than 30 seconds with SanDisk Extreme PRO 170 MB/s SD card and with Overclock and "More hacks" enabled. www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=25784.0 You can also try other modes out like crop mode 1x3 binning which is highly recommended.
hi so does 650d lets you shoot for at least 30 seconds with highest raw quality ? for me high would be 1920 1080
In Bilal's crop_rec_4k experiments for 650D, www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=25784.0, you are able to record more than 30 seconds with SanDisk Extreme PRO 170 MB/s SD card with the Overclocking module on and with "More hacks" mode on.
@@nykkyc3562 What about 550D? Aren't these settings possible for it? It seem 650D have higher hardware writing speed limitation as with 550D(only ca.21mb/s recording speed) For that fast cards won't help.
@@seafarer7954 550D Digic 4 processor is different from 650D Digic 5 processor. I don't think the 550D has been touched on in a while. You can check out www.magiclantern.fm/forum/ for more information about 550D and other cameras.

How did you stretch out the anamorphic footage exactly? @1:35 I have no such setting.
Color Tab -> Sizing Subtab -> Sizing - Input Sizing -> Click on the dot dot dot (...) -> Save as New Preset -> Save: Width = 2.267 and Height = 0.756. You can always change the values to your liking.

Hello Nykky, thank's for this tutorial. Just one question, I do not have to option the way hoe you stretch your anamorphic cinema DNG at 1.36 min. Its written: none, project and save as new preset. But I do not have the option Raw anamorphic while the DNG's came from the 5DMark3 and the MLV app. The way how I do it, is to go to the editing page: inspector video: Retiming and Scaling: stretch. I don't know if that is the right way. I use Davinci studio 17.4.4. You have any idea why I do not have your option Raw Anamorphic and is the way how I stretch also good. The Raw Anamorphic is an option I made for the anamorphic (1x3 binning) mode in Magic lantern. I will pin Hans van de Peppel's comment/question because he had the same question as well. If it works, you can use retiming and scaling to stretch it but I like to save mine as an option if I want to stretch specific clips. Here's what I did: Color Tab -> Sizing Subtab -> Sizing - Input Sizing -> Click on the dot dot dot (...) -> Save as New Preset -> Save: Width = 2.267 and Height = 0.756. You can always change the values to your liking.

@@nykkyc3562 One more last question. Why do you add Chroma smooth when you export as DNG. I believe it does not effect when you export as DNG. In other formats like ProRes or H264 it does. cheers again Richard
@@richardrem I added Chroma Smooth because it reduces the noise a little bit. I've tested out footage a couple of minutes ago to see if Chroma Smooth effects DNG and I found that it did reduce a little bit of noise. imgur.com/0tAufZz An issue that could happen when using 3x3 Chroma Smooth is that it can possibly create jagged lines, but I'm not sure if it happens anymore since that was an issue in 2014.

HTP should be in your custom functions tab of the camera settings
That’s so interesting! A lot of people I see will export directly from mlv app as Apple prores in Alexa log c, but this seems like a more efficient way to get the same color space without the lengthy encoding process. And highlight recovery in resolve is the cherry on top. Cheers!
I used to export as Apple Prores in Alexa Log C too but it took too much time to export. This definitely saves a lot of time!d
Nice! For the video that been shot in Anamorphic mode you select the 'Raw Anamorphic' format present. Can you please share the format details for that present?

This tutorial is everything !!! Thank you for doing this ! We’re learning more than how to keep the highlights but also how to color grade at the same time 👌🏾👌🏾. I wonder how you found this out though !
You're Welcome! I just played with the settings to see what worked and what didn't work. Apparently it was the "Timeline working luminance" that retained the highlights that were clipped along with disabling "Use inverse DRT for SDR to HDR conversion".
