A Night Trip to Thong Pha Phum National Park, Thailand
In March 2024 I met up with Dan from the UK and we did a trip up to Pilok in Thong Pha Phum NP and then explored around my land - Huai Khayeng Nature Park. Here are a few images of some of the wildlife that we found.

I am wanting to visit this National Park in two weeks (from Australia) but struggling to find clear and reliable information (like how far can I get into the park without a 4x4?… and how much can I explore on hiking trails?… etc.), Kaeng Krachan is my first choice but lack of information about visiting the park is causing some hesitation. Any advice you can share?

Thank you for the interesting comment. I actually filmed macaques (monkeys) at this location in about 2008 and at that time was informed that they were Rhesus Macaques, but when I filmed them on this most recent occasion (2023) the rangers at this park said that a primate expert had visited the park and identified these macaques as Assamese Macaques, and indeed these species are very similar in appearance. Thailand has four other macaque species, but they are much easier to distinguish, either by appearance or by location.

How come the young one is white in color?
@nadavesela4642 They're just always born like that. The newborns are very nearly hairless, and have very white skin as well. When their fur starts to come in it's white, like their skin, but as the months go by it gradually darkens and eventually it's quite dark as you see here. The redness of their faces, too, is a product of maturity. The skin on the infants' whole bodies is white as white can be. The change kind of coordinates with the change in hair color - after the hair has begun to darken, their faces start to turn red. It takes a few years to really complete the process. If you're experienced with them - more experienced than me! - you can use these factors to get a pretty good idea how old they are, at least up to a point where they're pretty much done. But that's well into adulthood I believe. The redness is something that happens to several different species of macaques. It has to do with capillaries being very close to the surface, from what I've read. The question is left begging why they aren't born that way. The Japanese macaques, the snow monkeys that bathe in the hot springs in winter, resemble Rhesus macaques to a pottery high degree - I have trouble still telling them apart. They are are additional examples of species that develop these bright red faces. Rhesus babies have a beautiful kind of reddish-gold hair, and white skin. Eventually their faces turn even more completely red than the stumptails, which from what I've seen are always kind of blotchy. And their hair changes over time to a brownish color not too unlike these. What's cool with the rhesus is the color change starts at the head IIRC - even if I'm recalling that wrongly, it starts at one end, and there's a line of demarcation between the two colors that travels throughout young adulthood. So again, if you know them better than I do, you could get a good idea of their age by seeing how far that line has traveled.

Fantastic video as usual, I myself was surprised at the sheer density and variety of frogs, of course it could be due simply to the sheer abundance of water sources, but I feel they can probably form a civilization of their own at this point!
Actually, on my previous visit to that stream, which was at the end of the rainy season, there were so many more frogs than this. They were everywhere, and there were so many different species, but the wet rocks made it difficult to walk.

Apologies for my lateness, I’ve been caught up in studies and so have only been able to find time I find the scene you captured of that cicada being swarmed by ants, while still emerging horrifically captivating, it would make a good premise for some sort of horror novel I imagine! Given the apparent abundance of water sources In this region, I would like to enquire as to the amount of aquatic life, be it shrimp, freshwater fish, crabs and other water insects you get in the area, i suppose they would be rather prolific. I wonder if you have kept a record of these yourself! I have recently read studies about a certain species of skink found in freshwater streams in Thailand that is considered an indicator species for good water quality as well!
Yes, indeed. There is a lot of other aquatic life up around that stream valley. I saw otter at close range, and that has to be a very good indication of the health of the stream. There are plenty of freshwater crabs in that whole area, and in fact a new species was recently described in Thong Pha Phum. I have also seen a crab in caves near my land that I think might be a new species. All the streams and even small pools seem to have crayfish and good populations of amphibians. I am just starting to make records for Huai Khayeng Nature Park and for the surrounding area, but I haven't started to put those records into a proper data base yet.

Thank you Gijs... Yes, the trip to the Netherlands was very successful. We painted and decorated my son's apartment and put it on the market. Fingers crossed that we can sell it soon. The work here has been a long hard haul, but it really seems to be coming together well now. I hope to receive visitors after new year. I can't wait to see what other people think of the place.

Yes. I did actually do that on some earlier videos, but it is a lot of work and it doesn't help to make the video more 'searchable' on UA-cam..... if that makes sense. I always write an extensive description below the video with the English, binomial, and Thai names there.
