As an Irish-American, I went to Ireland last year. I was honestly more overwhelmed by the culture shock when visiting the Southern US than I was visiting Ireland. Everything in Ireland felt familiar, and the only real surprise I found was how friendly the people are. (I should also note - I was told I was Irish by the locals like three times. I never made any such comments myself; I worried it would be a touchy subject.) The stereotype of the American who claims Irishness but thinks Ireland is a nation of cottages and leprechauns is both making mean-spirited light out of the sad history of ethnic suppression in the US that has left Irish-Americans culturally ignorant of our own ethnicity...and also vastly over-exaggerated. There is very little overlap between Americans who claim Irishness and those who know little about Ireland proper. I can only assume it comes from Irish people assuming all white Americans are Irish descended - according to the census, only 10% of Americans and 15% of white Americans are Irish-American. Yet, as Ireland becomes more and more Americanized, I suspect the Irish will continue to exaggerate the differences because it allows them to cling to what little sense of identity they have left. Forgetting, of course, that Irishness has been an ethnic identity above anything else for centuries at this point. As long as people feel that sense in them, Irishness remains. And frankly, it's remarkably resilient.

I've spent much of my life in Ireland, my dad's Irish, mums half Irish, I have an Irish passport (and UK). But I was born and raised in England. No matter how Irish I want to be, or how Irish I am, I'm Anglo-Irish whether I like it or not, so I'm neither. My Irish family in Ireland tell me I'm Irish, but I know I'm missing something, it's something just out of my reach ☘️🇮🇪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

For anyone interested, that openly gay Taoiseach(Prime Minister) of a migrant background is called Leo Varadkar, who has been one of the most destructive individuals this country has had in generations. Among other atrocities he's brought to us, he installed a Garda Commissioner(police chief) who is a Northern Irish man of British descent, Drew Harris, whose father was blown up in an IRA car bomb. Not the most ideal choice to police the Republic. That same Commissioner was also in charge of an investigation into Varadkar for leaking government documents. As you might guess, nothing came of it. Make no mistake, despite this fool here laughing at Donald Trump and the like(not that I care for Trump), the names I've mentioned have categorically mangled Ireland to a point where many of us now feel like strangers and visitors in our own home. Also, for what it's worth, Leo Varadkar - that openly gay migrant Prime Minister - only supported gay marriage once he saw public sentiment swinging towards it. Before, he'd been against it. If you're planning on visiting Ireland anytime soon, don't. It's extremely expensive and all you'll see are Africans and people from the Middle East. These people are fine(for the most part), it's just that you will no longer receive an 'Irish' experience. (And for the race-baiting clowns that latch onto such statements, go look at the citizenship requirements for Nigeria. Nigerian parent or grandparent, or fifteen years to naturalisation, after which you can merely apply for citizenship without being assured. They also banned white models from TV advertisements. Must have missed the international condemnation of such racism.) What we have now in Ireland is hundreds of thousands of economic migrants taking advantage of our suicidal policies, coming here and popping out kids, and then claiming they're as Irish as we are. And the Mecca comment? A muslim dude called Palani beheaded two gay guys in Ireland a few years back. Because diversity, of course. Country's been ruined. And cunts like this only help make it worse. My birth mother came from Cavan to Scotland to have me and place me for adoption, as she was an unmarried mother, while contraception and adoption in Ireland were illegal. I am 93% Irish through my DNA, even though I was born and grew up in Scotland. About 2000 Irish women came to the UK a year to give birth. On top of that, you had the babies that were illegally sold for profit to America, so it's not unreasonable to think that some of those Americans are actually Irish. I have half- siblings in Ireland, as will many of them.

i lived in Ireland for a few years when i was a kid, in a rural town. Busses with old American tourists would pass through town and we would wave at them. Unfortunately, many American tourists think the Irish are friendly but in many instances are just being fake. They laugh or curse them when when the tourists leave. This comedian confirms what I am saying. It’s sad really, Irish Americans are very proud of their perceived heritage. Obviously the reality of current Ireland doesn’t match that perception. But, the Irish rather than embrace the Americans would rather laugh at them behind their backs. Not cool.
