No wood working shop is complete without a radial arm saw and the hundreds of wood workers to show you how to use them. It is a shame they are falling out of favor and I'm hoping I can change that by showing an idea I developed from seeing red pine trees a neighbor cut down for a clearing that nobody wanted and joined them with a saw nobody wants anymore. This is very nice to see, your Dad was smart, but the Apple didn't fall to far from the tree. They do make a table top swing arm ditigtal drill press now thats radial arm and can tap, but its mostly ment for metal working.

I have always wanted to teach metal working. What your doing here is the kind of thing we need in this country right now. We used to make nice things built to last for generations. People are getting tired of buying stuff that ends up in the landfill after a short time. please keep up the good work. I would love to see more videos.

This is a wonderful tribute to your father, an excellent building for you teaching OLD school ways, and carrying on his legacy. It reminds me of my father's workshop, though not as well presented as yours. Thankyou for the tour of the MR SAWDUST School, and I'm certain it will be around for long time.

I use a jig similar to yours on my table saw. It work the same way as yours. I have made many jewlry boxes and the like using the jig and as you said ,"you can't get it wrong"! I like the fact that any length can be obtained. I have a friend that trims out buildings he also uses a table saw . you can also adjust the jig to get different angles. Your dad make an excellent picture frame.

One day I went shopping on OfferUp and found a guy selling a 1953, DeWalt 3 phase, 3 horse GR54. I couldn’t believe my eyes. The thing looked brand new. Original paint, fully equipped and the former owner had even rigged an inverter so it could run on 220 single phase. He only asked $500. I went up to see it and verify that the thing really ran. It was perfect. No rust, not a single chip in the paint, threw a 14” blade and ran true and straight. It was even rigged with a switched power cord to operate a dust collector. I will never see a better deal for a power tool in my entire life. Trailered it home and spent the next week dialing it in to perfection. Added a custom made fence to hold Board Buddies for ripping. But I gotta say, Nothing but nothing beats a well made, 500 pound DeWalt radial.

I wish a manufacturer would design and produce a RAS incorporating SawStop-like safety technology. The RAS has many advantages over the table saw. The conventional wisdom is that the RAS is more dangerous, but SawStop technology would overcome this prejudice.

This is wonderful, did your Dad get this idea from your brother in the boatbuilding trade. I remember seeing the idea of a hanging drill press back in the 80's in FineWoodworking magazine that a boatbuilder talked about. Cheers, I do something similar to drill stainless steel sheet that is 4x8 feet.....I am too old to be drilling hundreds of holes in stainless with a hand drill.....

Good to hear you carrying on your dad's traditions! I read his book cover to cover and built his table top for my DeWalt. I hope to be 1/10 th as good someday. I'd seriously consider taking your class if you'd move it to SC 8<)

Love this. I just finished my first reading of the Mr. Sawdust book. I have an OK Craftsman that I have finally managed to get into alignment after following a combination of Mr Sawdust, the factory manual, Jon Eakes book and the Delphi forum for DeWalt Radial arm saws. I was determined to get the Craftsman saw functional to finish up some very basic work I am doing right now. My dad built cabinets for my entire childhood on a DeWalt RAS, and I have recently acquired one, but it's apart for reconditioning at the moment. The Mr Sawdust book has a nice description of using a perpendicular fence with a 45 degree. I would guess the wing idea came about as your dad thought about how he could do the cuts even better!

ok i dont own a dewalt but i have 2 craftsmen ras. I'd like to make that jig , I looked at your dads book, there you were as a tot hanging out in the shop with dad, then later is the book a young man. Classy you put your dads picture in the frame he made, I don't think he ever thought for a second that's what it would be used for. Your grandkids kids will look at that and enjoy it That's what woodworking is all about stuff that can last generations made from trees that took generations to grow.. Thank you for the tour! I have seen references to the school but really did not know any more than the name. When the camera was panning along the books, I noticed a copy of one I frequently refer to: "Cabinetmaking and Millwork" ... I have a copy of that book, which I got sometime in the 1970's when I was taking a woodworking "refresher" class through the county school system. At the time I had been away from woodworking for about a decade and had just purchased a Craftsman 10" radial arm saw. (I'm still using the same one.) I don't have as many books in my woodworking library, but almost a quarter of them are completely or partially about the RAS. Including the one by your father, of course.

Very nice, and more versatile than the one I built for myself a long time ago. I also would be interested in a copy of the drawings. Subscribed!
