How did you record the onboard sound? And what software did you use to edit?
Looks like they're using the 1/4" jack out for recording - that's the only cable I see coming off of it, and other than the USB out (which might just be for recording MIDI note data, rather than recording audio? I'm not positive), I believe that's the only recording output on the Roland AE-10. Since this appears to have been recorded in a professional recording studio (implied from the photos at the start to be Talkback Records), it's likely whatever DAW (digital audio workstation) software they use internally. (Although I can't make out the software on the screens in the control room photo, given how overly bright it is.) Since Rafael indicated in another comment that they'd gotten the backing track on UA-cam, I would think that this would be a fairly easy and simple mix for any knowledgeable audio engineer, unless there were issues with making Rafael's sax line blend in with the backing track. Such challenges might include: making it sound roughly like it's in the same room, keeping the parts out of each others' ways, etc.. Since a sax has such a different tonal character than a piano, I wouldn't think that fitting them together would be particularly challenging overall, but I might be wrong - and getting instruments to sound like they're part of a cohesive mix is usually more complex than just sitting the two tracks side by side and playing with the volume. They could be using some compression, possibly slight additional reverb, EQing, possibly some very light and transparent sidechain multiband compression. (I'm least confident about this last one, as I know sidechain compression and multiband compression are both useful techniques, but I haven't done much sidechaining, and I don't recall combining the two.) In short, any professional DAW should be more than capable of doing a mix like this - e.g. ProTools, Cubase, Logic, Reason, FL Studio, or my personal favorite, Reaper.
That’s cheating that’s not a real instrument
Of course is a musical instrument, is not a traditional instrument but is a digital instrument 🎶
@@rafaelportillo7984, i agree... sound too good.
@@rafaelportillo7984 yes. Like saying an electric guitar and an electronic keyboard are cheating. Try carrying that full sized piano to every gig or playing an Eddie Van Halen solo on acoustic guitar.
Ah yes, the age-old discourse of what constitutes a "real" musical instrument. In fact, my initial assumption on seeing this was that @thomasreppond3608 must be joking here, just because I don't think I've heard anyone make this argument or anything like it seriously for a while. But, I'm guessing they are actually serious here, so I'll give a bit of an explanation as to why, as a semi-professional performing musician, playing an electronic instrument like this isn't "cheating", and the idea that some instruments are somehow not "real" is kind of wrongheaded. First of all, who are we cheating? The audience? How are they being cheated? Music isn't a competition, so how CAN there be cheating? The audience is presumably listening to hear music, and Rafael is making beautiful music. His instrument (the Roland Aerophone AE-10, an electronic wind instrument a.k.a. EWI) requires skill to play: for example he is still using similar fingerings as he would on a saxophone (albeit with the same fingerings for every octave, which may not be true for saxes). The breath control to create dynamics is similar to what someone would use playing an acoustic saxophone. I believe the AE-10 and other EWIs generally don't require reed technique as does a saxophone, or other single-reed (clarinets) and double-reed instruments (oboes, bassoons), but reed technique is used for those acoustic instruments because it's part of the mechanism of tone production. For an electronic instrument, there's no need for that, and so long as relatively similar expressivity can be achieved in other ways, what's the issue? For some people, myself included, getting to enjoy some of the expressive potential of woodwind and brass instruments without some of the significant learning curve could be an acceptable tradeoff. In general, for something to be a "real instrument", I would intuitively say that it needs to be able to convey a performer's intent in an expressive way, so that an array of musical results can be created. I should probably explain what expression and expressiveness are: these are the other characteristics of how a note or series of notes are played, which could include things such as the attack (whether the sound starts sharply and suddenly versus starting quietly and building), the tone color of a note, phrasing (which notes are connected together), vibrato, particular effects such as saxophone growl or flutter tonguing on the flute, perhaps ornamentation such as trills and mordents, pitch bends, how long a note is held, volume / dynamics, and so on. Basically, anything which lets a player perform a melody in a more interesting and musical manner than simply playing each note at the exact same volume and with the same tone. Different instruments allow different kinds of expressiveness - a harpsichord's mechanism means that all of its notes are played at the same volume and with the same attack, but a player can still be expressive via phrasing and ornamentation. A piano was a later advance in the development of keyboard instruments, and was designed to allow the player to control volume and attack - but, once you play a note, you can still only control its volume by releasing it, or by using the pedals to affect sustain, etc.. There's no way to make the volume suddenly swell halfway through a note, for example. Because woodwind instruments such as the saxophone are played using the breath, they tend to be very expressive instruments, because careful control over breath and technique allows a player to change the tone color, dynamics, attack, etc. very finely, even in the middle of a note. A single note can swell and recede multiple times, if a performer wants it to, with any vibrato they want, changing the tone color however they want, only limited by their skill and command of the instrument. Conversely, while I'm sure there are some subtleties that I am unaware of, the vibraslap is an acoustic instrument which, as far as I am aware, and as far as I have seen it used, does not seem to allow for much expressiveness that anyone seems to find particularly desirable. Where I've seen it used, it's almost more of an acoustic sound effect than an instrument, but as a form of percussion, it still has musical uses. And I suppose it's always possible that there are some mad artists out there frantically developing extended techniques for the vibraslap, but I have yet to see it.
Now, electronic instruments allow performers to create sounds which cannot be created by acoustic instruments, but they can also allow performers to replicate sounds of acoustic instruments in varying levels of detail. These replications usually come with tradeoffs: a digital keyboard that has brass sounds *usually* has a fairly different character than a real brass instrument, and very often gives the performer less control - less expressivity. However, in certain cases, that can be all a performer or other artist needs to get a certain sound, and while it would be wonderful if they could afford to pay for a full brass section to come with them on tour, for some artists that isn't practical. And even if they can, while someone is composing the horn parts for that brass section, it might be useful for them to be able to play those on a keyboard and get a sense for what the final version will sound like. Is playing a digital piano "cheating"? Merely pressing buttons to play a prerecorded piano note, rather than actually playing a "real" instrument? Hopefully it's obvious that there's quite a bit of complexity an artistry here as well. And sure, a cheap, toy electronic keyboard might only play a single recording (or sample, or synthesized recreation) of a piano note when you press any given key, and it may not allow you to adjust the dynamics of it. But most entry-level digital keyboards will at least give you dynamics for your piano sound, and the ability to connect a sustain pedal. Older or crappier keyboards may still just have one piano sample which they play at different volumes depending on how hard you hit the key, but the better the digital keyboard, generally they will either have more samples played at different dynamic levels (in the 10s, or hundreds, or even thousands), or they will use software algorithms to model how a piano sound is produced acoustically. They will also have more sensitive keys, giving the performer greater control. Not all instruments of the same type (e.g. acoustic and digital pianos) are equally expressive, of course - when I first got a digital piano back in college, it greatly helped me develop as a musician, being much easier to play than the digital keyboards I had growing up, and was fairly portable, but it still didn't have the same level of expressiveness as an acoustic grand piano. But, because it was much cheaper, and I was able to bring it with me to play music wherever I wanted to bring it, that was an acceptable tradeoff - especially as a beginning player, who couldn't really appreciate that expressiveness anyway. In fact, if I didn't have digital keyboards now, I would still not have an acoustic piano of any kind, because my house is older, and built in such a way that it is not able to support their weight. Having a digital version (whether a hardware version like my keyboards, or a software version like various VST plugins) allows me to make music that I could not make otherwise, and allows me to control a wide variety of other sounds as well. And of course, since nowadays much of the music we listen to is via recordings, we can also ask - is listening to recorded music somehow "cheating"? Should everyone be required to only listen to music where the bands are physically present? Of course not, because sometimes people want to listen to music in contexts when they can't physically be at a live concert. But, there are numerous ways in which the recordings of instruments that go into a song can be tweaked to make them fit the song better. Autotune (when not used intentionally as a vocal effect) is a classic form of so-called "cheating" by artists, because it allows e.g. a vocalist (who for whatever reason didn't or wasn't able to sing a melody in the way they want it to sound on the final recording) to sound closer to that desired sound. And yeah, in that sense it might allow someone who lacks technical chops to make better music than they otherwise could have, it can be seen as giving artists a leg up... but we'd generally prefer the music we listen to to sound as good as it can, right? And in some cases, maybe an artist has great song ideas, or experiences which are really important and personal that only they can share, or is a great performer in other ways, and that bit of autotune allows them to put out a song that resonates with others. Plus, because we've heard so much impeccably-perfect music without the natural imperfections that go with a live, natural performance of even very highly-skilled performers, listeners are far less forgiving of these slight imperfections on a recording, and so our expectations are unrealistic as well. Beyond that, recordings can be chopped up, combining multiple takes of e.g. the vocalist into one final stem track that sounds as good as it can, either because they sang some parts of the song better in certain takes, or because some of the takes had some additional random noise such as a squeaky chair or a passing car. Even subtle effects might be applied, like EQ or compression, to make a recording sound cohesive. In a live performance of acoustic instruments, that'd first be the job of the composer (and possibly the sound mixing engineer(s)), but in a recording, there's other things that can be done to shape the sound of a recording. Is that "cheating" because someone isn't an amazing classical composer as well as their other skills? Not really. There'll still be advantages to being a skilled composer, and it'll likely make a track easier for the sound engineer to mix if it's composed in a well-thought-out manner, but if someone lacks that skill but wants to throw some extra instrumentation on there, mixing can help make the end result better.
Beautifully played. I have the aerophone 05 and the saxophone sound is terrible, even with the Roland app.

@@gerardlanphear9185 I compleyely agree. Stop focusing on the realistic aspect only. You cannot deny that this just sounds very musical and enjoyable. I
@@gerardlanphear9185 Yeah, I love me some synth leads, but on this track I think you're right: it would have been obtrusive / stuck out. I suspect it would have just felt wrong for the song's vibe, at least with this very traditional jazzy instrumentation, and with a jazz standard. Most people don't expect a synth player at cocktail hour, you know? Then again, maybe it would be an interesting departure. But I feel like that kind of fusion might either need another anchoring element in the rest of the instrumentation to feel natural, or else require an unusual sound that matches the organic feel of the backing, basically sounding like an acoustic instrument that doesn't exist.
