There is some bad news regarding the 3 steam locomotives that the Sumpter Valley Railroad has. Unfortunately the 2 restored steam locomotives are currently broken and under repair, but the process of repairing No. 19 and No. 3 takes a few years. So I speculate they won’t come back to life for a few more years due to lack of funding. But there is some good news for No. 20! I heard one of the volunteers say that they are starting to get serious about restoring it soon! However that might not happen anytime soon because of funding for the project. And No. 19 was restored back in 1996 so its sister locomotive No. 20 may be restored more than 30 years later than No. 19! So the only working locomotive is No. 720 the narrow gauge Diesel Electric locomotive which was used in this video. My dream is to see No. 3, No. 19, and No. 20 back in operation by 2030!

As of November 2024 the main line on the Sumpter Valley Railroad is officially longer than it was back in 1947 when it was pulled up. The main line stretches about 6 miles from McEwen to Sumpter.

Open-Air Car No. 1185 and Open-Air Car No. 1147 each have a PA system that the conductor uses to talk to the passengers. These 2 train cars were originally flat cars used by the original Sumpter Valley Railway, but they were later modified to what they are now, Open-Air Cars. However the roofs on top of them were recently added about 2 years ago, they use to have no roof over them. The Passenger Car No. 20 was one of the first passenger cars used both by the original Sumpter Valley Railway and by today’s Sumpter Valley Railroad. It was first used for passenger service back in 1886, and was also one of the first passenger cars restored during the beginning of the restoration. Passenger Car No. 100 was restored back in 2019, but I don’t know when it was first used originally. The only thing I know about Passenger Car No. 1110 is that it’s actually also an Open-Air Car in the Summer Time, but the add the windows for it in the Winter. The Diesel Electric No. 720 was actually restored back in 2019 and it is one of the few narrow gauge diesels in operation in the U.S. it is actually more rare than a steam locomotive, which is very interesting. And as for the train equipment not used, steam locomotive No. 3 the Heisler is currently broken and under repair. Steam locomotive No. 19 was actually built for the original Sumpter Valley Railway in 1920. Steam locomotive No. 19 is also broken and under repair. Steam locomotive No. 20 has not been restored yet but they have saved a lot of money to restore it someday. Steam locomotive No. 20 was also built in 1920 for the original Sumpter Valley Railway in 1920 just like No. 19. That’s all I know folks.

We went back in June of 23 and it is a sadly neglected relic of the glory days of dredging. The Pedro Dredge at Chicken, Alaska is well preserved but not on its original working site. I grew up in Baker Oregon mostly. I live 5 mi east of Baker on Old highway 30 what was called ebell crossing. Across the road from where we live was a water tower for giving water to the old locomotives. It was fed by a natural spring there on our property and across the road. I used to watch The troop trains go by and soldiers would wave at me as I stood at the gate and watched them. There were two dredges up there towards Sumter that used to just sit there doing nothing for years when I was in my teens.

Do you know Ben Curry? My husband knew him and his dad and said they lived right across from the school and church.

I do not know him. Ben was the last student. He signed and noted the date on the blackboard. It is still there today.
