Rivendell Platypus - Frame Preview (Before Build)
I just began building this Rivendell Platypus in a beautiful Mermaid (sea foam green) color. This is arguably the coolest bike ever made but, no matter your personal tastes, what cannot be argued is the craftsmanship and attention to detail in this frame. I have wanted a Platypus since 2021 and I luckily got the opportunity to get one from Riv's latest run. I am glad I waited because this colorway is insanely gorgeous! The Platypus will be rolling on SimWorks Standalone rims in anodized gray built on a White Industries Mi5 rear hub and a SON Deluxe Widebody dynamo front hub wrapped in Rene Herse Hatcher Pass 48mm tires. I'm building this bike up in the classic Rivendell style utilizing lots of Nitto and Silver components while adding pops of color throughout to keep it interesting. Be on the lookout for the final build coming soon.

Rivendell Roadini (Halloween Build)
Переглядів 3,8 тис.14 днів тому
I had my first ride on this newly-built Rivendell Roadini late afternoon on Halloween. The dark gold (perhaps pumpkin) frame fit the holiday perfectly. I hope you enjoy the vintage mashup of Campagnolo and Shimano components, as well as modern classics from Nitto, Ultradynamico, and Brooks that, in my opinion, form a cohesive and aesthetically-pleasing, no nonsense all road bike.

I'm about to build up this sweet Rivendell Roadini, so I wanted to show off the frame details before I begin the complete assembly. The craftsmanship of this frame is amazing - a stunner for sure.
Crust Evasion (Geared Drop Bar Setup)

I modified my Crust Evasion from a single speed setup (check out prior video) to a drop bar geared 1X setup with SRAM XX1 Eagle rear end and Microshift bar end shifter with some anodized bling to please the eye.
Crust Lightning Bolt - Update

Here's an updated bike check after a nearly 5 month break-in period and a couple thousand miles. Just keeps getting better. In addition to the updates mentioned in the video, I also have matching front and back Ultradynamico Cava Race tires with the Bolt set up in all road mode.

Check out my Crust Evasion single speed build inspired by a similar Evasion build by Tyler Siems of District Bicycles in Stillwater, Oklahoma. I'll soon be rebuilding this bike to be geared with drop bars, so I wanted to memorialize its current state of awesomeness.

Check out this sweet Crust Lightning Bolt build by Adam Hall in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Designed by Adam and expertly built by the fine folks at District Bicycles in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Sick dude. That new Charlie Gallop model is 🔥too….
I agree! I just wanted to run V brakes and a larger tire, so the Platypus is my ideal step thru.
This is gonna be great. I have Hatcher Pass on my Homer, lovely tyres. What brakes will you run?
I’m running Paul Motolites in black and chrome.
This is my first time riding the extralight casing from Rene Herse. I hope it is not too fragile but it sure does feel supple (to the touch) so it should be a smooth ride.
@@DropBarDharma I have the endurance casing and they are super cushy so I’d say the extra light are cloud like. Motolites always a good choice! I have them on my Appa.
Dang man are you a millionaire! ha. I wish I could afford just one!
I work hard and drive an 8-year old Toyota Prius so I can have a full stable of bikes. But I am indeed fortunate to have a career that allows me to indulge my passion for steel steeds.🙂
@ super cool!! I drive 7 year old Kia ha. For the exact same reason
Wow!!! Can't wait to see it finished.
Hope that the build goes well. Love to see a Roadini ride review with pics too.
Check out my page - I recently posted a full video of the completed build.
@@DropBarDharma Did you do a long ride review? Curious to get your feedback on how this bike handles around the way. Thanks again!
Awesome rig!! What a beauty!
Beautiful bike! Some day I may try to do a similar build. I used to mix all 3 drivetrain groups together on a cobbled together build around the early 2010s. I had luck with using a 10 speed SRAM Rival WiFli rear derailleur with Campy 10 speed shifting. That allowed for an 11 to 36 cassette to be used, which was massive at the time. : ) Then I'd run my Dura Ace 10 speed crank as a 1x with a 38T chainring. Almost got me 1 to 1 for the easiest gear, but then I'd be spinning out on the long downhills. Still worked well though. But man, your pristine Dura ace rear derailleur and shiny cranks make that bike just gleam. With 2x cranks that can go super low now (26T small chainring) using the older smaller cassettes isn't as much of an issue as it was when "compact" cranks had a small 34 T chainring.
Well done!
What a beauty, on Halloween I'm a green-eyed monster!
that is a giant frame! looks great btw
I judge that to be one frame sized up from what I would use. So you should be about 6ft 5? I am a fan of the VO Randoneur bars with a decent drop and reach. I have them on 3 of my bikes. Makes it easy to adjust reach with a greater range of TT lengths.
Great job on the build!
The gold crankshaft nuts on the completed bike were chef’s kiss.
Roadini is the king of the bike jungle! I'd be tempted to get a lugged version too if I hadn't just pulled the trigger on a Charlie H Gallop.
That CHG will be cool.
Nice rig
Gorgeous bike. Thanks for posting :) can’t get enough of these beautiful Rivendells!
Me neither! I've got another one in the works. They are so awesome.
@ Post your progress if you can. Would love to see how you build it and choose components 😍
Sick build, sick bike, I’m totally jealous Dude! Lol
Thanks man!
Top kit mate
Great build. Is the seat post a nitto
Yes. Nitto S65.
THAT THING IS SICK!!!! What tires are you running on that?
Ultradynamico Cava Race 42mm.
very beautiful build, great job
Great job with the color of the bar tape and the Cava tires. The color of those bar end plugs is begiling-11/10. My favorite part, the massive head tube(my own drops are at seat height). I only can recommend a bit of 3m clear protection tape under the bag ties to protect that beautiful frame paint. The 6mm thickness from Amazon is more invisible than the 8mm. I use it for my chain-stay as well because I love the color of my frame. and it is hard to see. Thanks for sharing and Best wishes with it!
So beautiful. I wonder what the frame flex on the lightning bolt feels like compared to the Roadini. I had the Roadini and now have the Sam, which feels way more stiff. I want a flexy bike!!
I think the Lightning Bolt is flexier than the Roadini by quite a large margin. The tubing is much thinner and it feels super soft but in a good way. The only flex I notice in the Roadini is in the rear triangle due to the long chainstays. I suppose that is the tradeoff for it having such a smooth ride with a long wheelbase.
@DropBarDharma wow. That sounds awesome. Thank you! This was very helpful!!
What a ripper! I built myself a Sam Hillborne on Halloween!! Haha
Sweet! My next project is a Platypus which I hopefully will have fully built by the end of the month.
Beautiful, practical and long lasting. Other bikes may go away but bikes like yours are here to stay.
Flawless build. I'm starting to worry about those Campagnolo levers now that I've exhausted my supply of parts and I don't think they're manufacturing new cog carriers and the like.
I'm taking very good care of them for that reason.
Nice job, a great combo and an appropriate color for the day !
Thanks!
Beautiful build.
Thanks!
This build is exactly what I would have done and is literally my dream bike
Thanks! I appreciate the kind words.
Absolutely gorgeous 🤤
Thanks so much! I am pleased with how it turned out.
Really clean and nice build
i dont know why but these bikes are so sexy
Looking forward to seeing it come together!
❤
its like a batmobile dude. Sick build
Hey Adam! What size is your frame?
Size XL
GORGEOUS!! what is that rear cassette?
It is a NOS Shimano XTR 11-34 from the late 90s.
Killer!
would it be possible to get a pink parts list?
Why sure! I love pops of pink - White Industries - headset and spacers, bottom bracket, and crank cap; black & pink Spur Cycles bell; and pink Jagwire cable housing. The bottle cages are anodized titanium from Silca which is a pink to purple fade. 😈
gorgeous bike
Looks awesome dude
Thanks!
Clipless pedals are not for cyclists. Flats are better in every way.
Nice build. Well done. My first build was a VO Passhunter, a great feeling of accomplishment. I’m looking now to build up either a Crust canti bolt or a Riv Roadini. Enjoy your day my friend.
Its a simple reliable and effective machine as a bike should be.
Looks stunning. Greetings from Leipzig
Thanks!
Cool!
cool
Nice bike!
Cool build. My Berthoud is taking a while to break in; 60kg rider.
I've had this saddle on several other bikes before this one and it takes a while for the leather to become supple. Hang in there!
What the type of brakes ? Pretty bike 😊
Paul Component Neo Retro cantilevers.
Or you can get Kore Cahti brakes. Frogslegs are the cool ones but are a pain to set up.
Nothing beats Paul brakes, IMO.
