Girth pain, wither pain and the stomach ulcer connection.
Horses commonly show some discomfort when their girth is being fastened. Ones reacting strongly to the girth are usually termed 'girthy' or 'cinchy'. Many of us attribute the reaction to the horse being just a bit sensitive or of poor tolerance. The reality is girthy horses are suffering from anything from annoying irritation to severe pain. Too often stomach ulcers are the only causes considered, however there is a large range of causes and continually handing out money for stomach ulcer medications might actually not be doing your horse a lot of good if all the other causes are not addressed. In this presentation we go through the intricate web of girth pain and ways it can more appropriately be treated.

Shimming to help rehabilitate the horse's wither.
Переглядів 90Місяць тому
For a variety of reasons many horses lose muscle behind the shoulder blade, resulting in the saddle dropping in the front. Plainly adding a regular shim pad over the whole of each side of the wither is usually detrimental to the horse in that it tends to load the sensitive Spinalis thoracis muscle high in the wither. Using a specifically shaped and specifically placed shim of a foam with simila...

Just found your videos today and feel they are the best I've ever seen! THANK YOU! I am also interested in how/where to acquire the shim pads for withers. Searching for that kind of information lead me to your videos. In Wisconsin, USA.
I have a mare that passes out when being girthed.
this was great, thank you.
Hi Ian, where can I get those shims please?
Would you recommend FES?
subscribed. This guy cares about horses. Educating the humans that look after the horses. And I just bet that the racing industry loves cortisone and other symptom masking treatments... This guy gives me hope that there are some well trained and educated genuine horse lovers that are willing to share what they know. Thanks
Great presentation! Thanks so much for sharing your expertise!
This was so very helpful, I am so glad to have found this.
Great video! I'm working with a former Amish cart horse with, what the farrier said was, S/I issues. I had a vague idea what this meant. Now I have a better handle on the problem and a way forward. Thank you very much :)
Thank you very much for these videos. I am an everyday horse keeper, but have found them very helpful for my everyday horses. This one on birth trauma I have found particularly pertinent to a mare in my keeping. She shows clear signs of birth trauma in the withers. I would be interested in a part two of this topic, in that how does all this affect a horse in the hindquarters, where the horse has grown to become very crooked with clearly different hindquarter muscling and movement. Issues with ligaments and the such.
Every horseperson should hear this. Thanks a lot for sharing.
Very informative and interesting, thank you!!
Just come across this video, thank you for sharing this information so informative. Shows how important it is to build up strength in our horses.
Thanks very much for this, would have loved some options of specific exercises at the end, otherwise thanks for all the info :)
Could you please put fly spray on this horse
Thank you for this video. Really great information.
Thank you for another informative video. Clearly, you have a love for the horse and care deeply about it’s well-being.

You have an image there of a dry spot when you talk about the saddle fit. I’ve been told a large dry spot like that is a good thing? What’s the actual answer to that lol?? Thank you!
thank you, for the simple physical teaching
Fantastic and very informative, thank you. Really pleased to hear the importance of proper rider exercises for the horse and the issue of rider weight for the horse
Thank you very much, this was super comprehensive!
Thank you for this very important information, it's what I've needed for years and didn't realize it!
Thank you, very informative and thorough.
So helpful. Thank you. I really needed this info.
What are the preparations for a kissing spine equine surgery
So frustrating that most vets are not taught appropriate palpation techniques and miss so much lamness from back and pelvic issues. A holistic approach is always best, and these things take time , expertise and effort - not all owners/managers have this, sadly. Thankyou for a straightforward explanation and your personal views based on experience, inorder to promote healing.
Really informative video. Can you talk about how these types of injuries are diagnosed?
thankyou well explained
Incredible video, thank you so much.
Very helpful, thank you for your clear explanation
Superb, thank you 😊
Absolutely brilliant video. I am a massage therapist in the UK and specialising in rehab and sadly you are right in the trends. I will share this and your other videos. Thank you
This video was tremendously helpful - thankyou for sharing this and for making it public
Won’t be much need for this video because most people in this country don’t have a spine
Doodles that's funny right there.
Brilliant Ian, Covered it extremely well regards Tom Ahern
Fascinating and so informative, thank you!
This is so informative. Thank you. I brought mine cheap as had mild ks shown on X-ray. When home discovered pregnant. She lost the foal after a traumatic birth where the foal died and she was suspended upside down to retrieve it. We then discovered undeveloped dead twin and 3000 worm count which may have caused the stillborn. She then had treatment for ulcers. Then physio as her pelvis was lowered to the near side. I discovered a fantastic cranial sacral lady and she has done wonders My girls getting stronger and better with correct riding and pole work etc. I wish you were in uk I’d have you on speed dial!!! Glad to know I’m on the right lines and would say everyone should try all your suggestions before surgery.
