WFTDA MSR - Reverse Crossovers
Переглядів 9 тис.11 років тому
For the 2013 update on the WFTDA Minimum Skills requirements, one skill is to do reverse crossovers. "Performs reverse crossovers, crossing over the right foot to the outside of the track." So skating counter-clockwise and forward, crossing left over right (the reverse of the usual right over left) to get yourself to the outside of the track. I went all the way out of bounds, but you get the id...

Real World: Derby Haus

So, a fan of derby haus had a dream that Animal and I had our own reality show, and that someone stole my hat and we beat them up. It ended with us waving. Here is our reenactment.
OCCRG goes to Madison

A little bit of video blog goodness revealing our nerves going up to Madison, Wisconsin to play the Unholy Rollers and the exciting and emotional win we skated away with. I obviously use after parties and boutfits as coping devices. Old Capitol City Roller Girls vs Mad Rollin Dolls Unholy Rollers 145 to 143. Roller Derby: It's Kind of a Big Deal
Переглядів 93 тис.13 років тому
For my BFA project for Intermedia, I made a mini documentary on my roller derby team, the Old Capitol City Roller Girls of Iowa City, Iowa. Footage is from January - April of 2010 and the finished piece was screened at the Iowa City Public Library May 8th of that same year. I have continued to enjoy making videos since then, particularly about roller derby, and hope to make more in the future. ...

"Slow Derby"
Переглядів 9 тис.14 років тому
At the 2010 WFTDA Championships, an obvious topic of discussion was "Slow Derby." White t-shirts that said "Slow Derby Sucks" seemed to be circulating and an overwhelming negative crowd response anytime skating on the track slowed, stopped or went counter-clockwise. I decided to pursue discussions with people who have different relationships to derby and explore their opinions. Interviewees: Pa...
wakeup.

A piece I made for an intermedia class to try and replicate a sense of dreaming. That in between waking and sleeping where things seem real, but obviously fake once you wake up. Taking footage from my everyday life, first person pov, I manipulated it in different ways, including glitch techniques, to create a free flowing mashup of imagery.

Love the video! <3 I am currently working on a documentary about roller skating in Amsterdam and the Roller Derby community is quite huge here too
Thanks for everything! Here’s a little something for you: ua-cam.com/video/W1D44v40LBM/v-deo.html
Roller derby women ROCK! Super fun!
Great video! You all should come visit Cherry City Roller Derby sometime <3
What was the name announced at 13:10? Or any of them? Durby names R fun but always sohard to hear in vids.
I know this is a 6 year old video, but its still relevant to today. This right here is prime example where i think roller derby isn't going the right direction towards of being a entertaining sport to even watch. what people are calling roller "derby" compared to old school roller derby, japan rollergames, ARSD, TXRD. and Renegade, certain rulesets just expand too much just gets more watered down and grounded. And then devolving into becoming a no hit, pack stalling, slow scrum fancy dancing, rugby rucking, gender segregated, stroller touch and nudge style derby. and that type of idea is gonna get stale with its audience and fanbase, the attendance are gonna get bored and lose interest with watching it, and that clearly show it just doesn't work, and that would be a cautionary about If your gonna take a simple game of roller derby and make it more complex with new rules and see it as "the good clean game", its gonna lose the soul of what made the game interesting to watch and drawn a audience to begin with, and if you lose that, you lose said audience and the fans. Roller derby in my view personally, will always be a divided civil war between what skaters want Roller derby to be with different rule sets and what the audiences want to see roller derby as a alternative fix towards wrestling, hockey, and other contact driven sports and sports entertainments that exist. which makes roller derby more niche and forever be a diverse experiment for years to come. To me roller derby is a action packed full contact sport exhibition that can bridge these ideas together if done successfully. there are reasons why i and other people would be interested in watching roller derby at hand. to see rivialy feuds and conflicts between teams and skaters, fast skating and hard hitting action, all sorts of physical contacts(even against the rules ones sometimes), and occasionally a fight breaking out. And not every roller derby rule set should promote fighting, don't get me wrong. but if a fight does break out between rival skaters or a entire team. thats part of the game. its a tough game a physical game. a human mix of racing, demolition derby, wrestling, and hockey combined together with rollerskates. and if roller derby ever bans contact in its next rule set. maybe it should lose the word "Derby" and call it roller something else, because you lost the right to call yourself a roller "derby" and the title of toughest sport in the world.
Fido Artz it's actually a 6+ year old video. WFTDA derby didn't die in that time and many things have changed. I personally still enjoy the game but this version isn't for everyone. USARs is out there for people who like the speed and it will be interesting to see where everything is at in 6 more years! Thanks for watching.
no problem but no offense, watching WFTDA just isn't my derby and i will not support it. no elbows, no punches, no fast skating, no creative blocking and hits, its too much of a chess game on wheels.
you just described why I like it! :) sounds like you need renegade roller derby.
i prefer co-ed Amercian roller skating derby. rollergame japan, and TXRD. but Yeah, too bad renegades are too local and are too behind closed closets to get exposure or don't have a decent budget as the WFTDA to hire a cracked production team of cameramen or editors to film or live stream a full game to the internet with professional editing or camera angles.
Fido Artz it took a long time and a lot of effort to get where WFTDA is. Mobilize and other versions can get there too!
The lady who appears at 8:00 is an inspiration. A wise woman ....
I'm actually excided I'm joining the begginer roller derby league for teens :3
I've had more fun playing roller derby than doing anything else in my entire life
Women hitting each other in sexy apparel this is fucking great
It's the rules that make for slow derby. The skaters are just implementing effective strategies for how the rules are set up. Don't fuss at the players for doing what works. I'd be interested to see some experiments in rule changes that speed up the game.
It is great. You go girls
worth a sex change
***** as far as i'm aware, there are mens leagues
I learned so much about Roller Derby from watching your doc! You can tell you really spent time with your interview subjects because they're really candid about what they shared! Cool stuff!! Keep making films! 😃
I am a Derby ref and I play Men's Derby and altogether I have lost 81 pounds (401 down to 321). Awesome exercise!
That's super impressive! You should be proud of yourself!
Thanks! I also dropped 2 pant sizes! :-)
+CaptainNicBlake Ikr!? Its insane!!!When I joined roller derby I went down from 145 to 125
I'm skating until my body will not let me anymore.
I've joined my local team as a freshmeat, and i'm LOVING IT!!!!!
you know what - I started it! :D
but... i dont want to be loved ;-; I'M A CONFUSED SELF CENTERED TEEN THAT IS TOO MISUNDERSTOOD TO BE LOVED D: why would I ever want to break that image? (I'm sorry, something a psychiatrist said that alluded to the "fact" that all teens acted like that was really funny, so I made a joke about it xD)
I'm signing up for the junior roller derby team in my state. :) It's 3 hours away, but I think it's worth it. :D
Not "sanctioned" by WFTDA but acted out exactly as they have clarified the skill.
Just a quick question lisame93 .... I just want to square this up for our league... Is this video somewhat sanctioned by the WFTDA, or is this just an interpretation. Very interesting video. Thanks.
looks like there are 5 men's leagues in California. Otherwise, you can still get involved! Be a ref! Start your own men's league!
Im a dude :P
Looks like you need to search harder: Silicon Valley Roller Girls.
Then I guess YOU better start one. :)
lisame93 you can’t just comment, you have to hit reply.
Yes! and we have recruitment coming up. I would love to have you join us, but I do feel I should let you know that there is more derby in that area: Dubuque Bomb Squad, or the Quad City Rollers.
wish there were people that skated near where i am. I skate all over San Jose and have not seen one other person skating out side, and haven't seen a single roller rink.
... but backward and reverse crossovers already existed in the vernacular before the WFTDA MSR 2.0. I shall continue to call them right and left crossovers regardless of what WFTDA call them. They same way I still refer to slow plow stops even though I live in California.
Right, they aren't backwards, they're reverse. :)
Almost forgot. Thanks for the video! :)
I disagree. They aren't backwards at all the are only to another direction and typically both directions are already taught to most skaters and no one to my knowledge refers to them as normal and backwards just left and right crossovers.
I agree the name is confusing but not technically wrong. "Reverse" does mean backwards but it also means contrary to the usual or transpose or opposite. Since crossovers are usually just right over left because we are going in circles, crossing the left over right would be contrary. Later a skill is backwards skating, it's not labeled "reverse skating" so hopefully the difference there could be seen?
Oh man. Then they are calling them by the wrong name. Those are just normal crossovers to the right and not a reverse crossover.
Looks like ze pack from hell! >.<
derby is every where from USA to our small country in the northern europe called sweden so derby moust be like every where some one moust just no it ecist.
I also want to start, but can you imagine - we do not have a single roller derby team in Russia! not a single one! so it is not everywhere. yet ^^
Rossolovich yet
I MISS MY DERBY BABIES!<3 VU.
You may want to do less hard cuts when editing video. Maybe leave one shot running for longer and a slight fade as opposed to hard cutting everything? It'll look less jagged.
OP - awesome video!
Go for it girl...I am Freshmeat myself, I am scared as heck, but it's gonna be amazing.
It is a great strategy, if you use it only a few times in a bout. If you use it every damn play, it is the game, not a play. I remember when it used to be a "play." Why do the have different plays in football? Why are there different types of pitches? Most teams are getting rid of the jammer whistle completely. So sure, if standing there, waiting for an opposing jammer to skate at their leasure, once around the track, so they can slowly slip through a pack , a strategy...bye bye attendence.
The answer to all of this is above the guys shoulder on the jumbotron at 4:25 and that is BANKED TRACK!!!
To clarify, it's a great strategy - I even taught it when coaching TT, but as a fan now, I realize how shitty it really is. It ruins the game and it's hard to recognize that until you're removed a bit from the sport and viewing from a fan perspective. I don't think leagues want to kill the sport or lose all of their fans. This needs to be addressed stat.
YES! Thank you. Skated for 5-6 years a few years back, was a big fan after when my body finally gave out, and I've since stopped attending or being a fan since this whole stop game crap and the nit picking over minor penalties thing started. Ridiculous! Glad they are doing away with minors at least.
I'm from a (quite small) city called Adelaide, Australia and I'm proud to say we have our own derby league. Derby is spreading like wildfire and I'm so excited for the future of the sport. Thanks for the awesome video - P.s, The girl at 8:00 is so fucking cute ;)
there are Jr roller derby teams too... i play on one of them..the Jr team i play on is called the chicago riots..look in to it if you really wanna be a derby girl!!
OCCRG rock!
Problem is that people WILL go watch something else. Leagues will be dissolved and the sport will take a big hit because of it. If the sport dies this will be the reason.
Boring. As a fan I don't want to pay to see it. Stop manipulating the rules to try and win. Instead, improve your footwork, design some real plays, and skate. What the hell happened to skate fast, skate hard? If the sport dies this will be the reason.
This is the most disgusting pathetic excuse for roller derby I have ever fuckin seen! This just makes me sick to my stomach to watch! How do you call yourself skaters??? PATHETIC! DISAPPOINTING! Just plain shit derby!
