Leigh Matthews Collingwood life membership acceptance speech December 2008
McKay kicks to the Carlton forward line at 2:36, only for Billy Picken to take a screamer over Sellers Maclure. 9 years earlier, in the 1970 GF, it was McKay again , this time from near the left back pocket at the Punt Rd end, who kicked it for Jezza to take that indelible mark over Collingwood's Graeme "Jerker" Jenkin. Same occasion: Grand Finals. Same teams. Same player whose kick led to spectacular marks.
Good pick up!
@richardpr23 Thank you. Footy has its way of creating its own connections. For example, Collingwood up by 27 points at 3/4 time in the 77GF; lost the replay by 27 points. Coll won the 1970 Second Semi-Final v Carl by 10 points; Coll lost the GF to Carl by 10 points.
👍 beauty mate
He was a legend Stan.
The first free kick paid by the umpire to McKenna was a terrible mistake and Waite had nothing to do with the free kick as stated by the commentator... It looks like Lofts was in a fair contest and used his body to keep McKenna under the ball as he gathered the mark
A Huge Lesson the Current Wallabies could learn from the 81 & 84 Wallabies.
Crows1991 Youok
Many thanks for the upload. I think I saw this when it was first broadcast. RIP Mr Ripley and Mr Butler.
My pleasure. It’s a good show.
gorgeous commentary. so eloquent. so succinct yet detailed. today we have bloody BT just yelling random words
That’s the thiiiiiiing about football
That last goal against the Cats was absolute genius and inspired the Pies to win that Prelim.
*Seems like the 'potato' needs a bit of a cleaning*
He was all class and was a superb kick on either foot. In a 1980 final against North Melbourne, he kicked 4 goals in one quarter. When he was traded to Fitzroy, he played some outstanding footy and played some of his best games in the many finals he appeared in.
Yes, he was a good player was Leigh.
Brett Papworth best inside centre of that era. Steve Pokere, Michael du Plessis and Dennis Charvet the others
Thanks for this brilliant footage. Such wonderful memories.
You’re welcome. Thanks for commenting.
The way they paid marks when you just touched it was ridiculous.
Yes, while the umpiring today isn’t perfect, some of the old stuff is pretty hard to understand at times.
Great to watch. Footy was better when players kicked long and backed their team mates to win the contested ball
That was the first VFL game I saw live after catching the train to Melbourne from country Vic. If you want to wave, I'm about 15 back from the fence on the outer side half forward when kicking to the left on TV.
Accept no imitations.
I swear International Rugby was better to watch back then.
I agree!
*Perhaps even a bit further back than the 90s*
How about the Empress of Erotica ad! Fantastic
I reckon the greatest of the them all.
89 Grand Final not 90.
Which bit are you referring to?
The 1990 in the title refers to the year the marathon replay was broadcast, overnight the day befre, and morning of, the grand final, not the year of the first grand final shown in the video. This replay started the Friday night, and continued into the Saturday morning, of the 1990 Grand Final between Collingwood and Essendon.
Good explanation :) !

Can you please upload gold rush the world in union the 1991 rugby world cup film
It is already on UA-cam, look for the Crebor Films channel. They have it.
Staggering that this UK highlights package didn't include 'that' George Gregan tackle on Jeff Wilson.
I know. I had to re-watch it after the first time as I couldn’t believe they didn’t include it. Maybe it was a Kiwi video editor?
O’Dea and St Kilda FC: criminals.
Bill McClaren's commentary is classic
Yeah, he’s great isn’t he.
A lot of issues using the new Adidas synthetic ball at the time in Windy conditions. Went to this game and had the pleasure of sitting in Millard stand.
Do u have the 1994 Bledisloe cup to upload please
Yes, but not the full match. I have a UK show with about 50 minutes of extended highlights. That will be up soon.
The real reason England didn’t wanna play? That England rugby team in the 70s was CRAP😂 (I’m English, the Welsh used to eat us for breakfast)
The players of today should take note! They are setting those scrums so fast, no time wasting at all.
Very noticeable
Thank you
Isn’t this Scotland v Australia (Murrayfield)?
Yeah bruh.
Went to West Adelaide and won a premiership in 1983!! (:
Best player I've ever seen
Lou, considered machine gun cleaning at nomination roll.
People were kinda..... shit at rugby back then
*The appalling picture of this lets us see the movement of the game, but the great definition those shorts gave the players is entirely lost*
*Matmos*
Yeh be great to see extended footage of some of the bands sets particularly rifles, died pretty, hard ons meanies mass appeal. Amazing lineup of bands. Some of these bands have very little live footage in the pre smart phone era
No McKenna no Collingwood
left ear loved this
was a charcter worked with kim at Coles in his butchering days after that game Peter aranged fore us to be in the rooms after that defeat it was still a great day
I love Chris' kindness.
GREAT band
My Dad’s favourite player as a seven year old and still spoke about him in his 90’s. Thought he was Daicos like before there was Daicos.
Yeah, it sounds like Des was pretty special. I wish there was more footage than these very brief clips.
wortho was a bewdy - tough bastard
@LloydfromCanada 7:57
Craig davis was a very good player at Collingwood topped there goalkicking 2 or 3 times Kicked almost 90 goals one year, career was cut short suffered a bad injury in 83 Retired at 29 Made a comeback with Sydney 5 years later
@gabrielmichael413 Yep remember him fondly combined with Daicos in ‘81 to form a very dangerous forward line. Smart, skilled, played tall for his height but as you say cut down with injuries.
