It's possible the Jack Kinney crew may not have considered this a tribute exactly, as lifeless as the original is by comparison (of course they could quite rightly point out that this was made in a year and a half, while they had more like four weeks to get theirs done, and let's not even talk budget), but it would have been a smash on the midnight college circuit in the late '60s and early '70s when college kids were hipper and less easily offended than they are now.

I love the context the animator [Milton Knight?] brought to this version. It now gives Brutus/Bluto/*ROAR!* a good reason to react so quickly to Popeye picking his bed of blossoms-- he was looking after it.

Apparently Popeye will enter the public domain next year. It will be interesting to see what people will do with the character.
