Taking a walk with my best friend
Приєднався 18 лис 2014
Hello. My names James, welcome and thank you for visiting!
TAKING A WALK WTH MY BEST FRIEND has been something I’ve wanted to do for a few years now….so here we are finally giving it a go! I’ve set up this channel to capture my hikes and to try to highlight the benefits to our mental health and well-being, of being outdoors. Hiking and the outdoors were a big part of my own recovery from my own mental health struggles I was facing 5 years or so ago.
I live in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire and a lot of my hikes are in the Peak District, though I also spend time locally and further afield, including my favourite place, Wales. I’ve lots of ideas for content for the channel, there will be plenty of hikes, some wild camping and lots of things I come across on my travels! Im sure there will be the odd random video for good measure too! It’s just a camera and me being me....which will mean a few post watershed words probably! Hope you enjoy the channel!

Exploring the River Trent floods January 2025
Hello and thanks for visiting my channel.
As is the norm after severe winter weather, the mighty River Trent has once again shown its power and burst its banks along large parts of its Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire lengths.
An unexpected day off gave me the opportunity to have a drive and walk along various stretches of the river to see the incredible sight of the flood.
Feel free to join me and see the power of Mother Nature and water.
Hope you enjoy the video
James

How did the drone cope in the cold weather?
@@hillsoutdoorsadventures it was alright mate, don’t think it affected the battery too much.
Ah hi, found you via Glossop wild camping. Im also quite a drive from the Peak District and went there for the snow last week. Subbed. You've got a nice straight forward way about you!
@@Chilternwildcamper hi there, thanks for watching and it’s nice of you to say, thankyou. Well worth the drive wasn’t it 👌
Great to see the local area from above. Freaks me right out seeing the river flowing through fields though! On a side note, if you use Apple Pay or have a card, you can pay that way at Dunham bridge. I got diverted a few weeks ago and had no change so chanced it. You also nearly got my mum and dad’s house in shot at Stockwith Marina😊 Lived opposite there growing up. Absolutely stunning place to live.
@@deblordoutdoors5783 it’s crazy isn’t it, hope you’ve managed to stay safe in it. Ha, the thing with having to get change for the bridge, it wasn’t until I was editing I thought why didn’t I just pay with the tenner I had on me anyway 😂🤷♂️🤷♂️ ah it’s a beaut little part of the world isn’t it! Thanks for watching 😊
@ Thankfully, I live well away from the Trent in Newark. I work in the community around the county so have been keeping an eye on available routes. Last year, I was helping to get medication to people by dinghy. Very frightening and my heart breaks for those who keeping getting their homes flooded. We’ve always been lucky at West Stockwith. We moved there in ‘96 and the Trent’s never breached at that part of the village. Touch wood! Hope you’re staying safe round Gainsborough.
@ legend, well done you 👏💪 it’s frightening the power of that river.
Enjoyed that mate...we seem to be having a proper winter....i have walked from Torksey a few times.
@atrampinthehills.841 thanks mate, yeah it certainly seems to be harsher than the last few winters ❄️
Very enjoyable meander along the mighty Trent some of the drone shots are amazing looking and it just shows how much water as rain or melted snow has come down. Never knew the Chesterfield canal emptied into the Trent so nice to see that bit as well as the Fossdyke. The ending on the Sunset looked good and i can imagine how cold it would be once it set. Looking forward to your next day out.
@@robgunnAK47 thankyou for watching mate. Yeah it’s an incredible sight when you see it from above.
UA-camrs should be charged for rescue missions. They do all this for money and encourage other idiots to do silly risky camps.
@@ga4pro I’m not making money from UA-cam nor encouraging people to take any silly risks, but thanks for your feedback.
A sound adventure that and it just goes to show you don’t have to walk for miles. You chose well to keep the distance low and I bet you appreciated it in the morning. Enough time to see the sights but then the warmth of the car and then perhaps a breakfast and coffee in a cafe close by. Enjoyed that bud. A q and a could work well - why not eh? Great that your daughter thought of you and wanted to spend Christmas with her dad. Perfect. Thanks for sharing, look after yourself and onto the next one eh! Gav
@HikingForHealth1 Cheers Gav 👍 yeah really enjoyed it, just enough adventure without it being too risky. Always nice to see places with their different seasonal coats on!
You definitely took the wiser option than we did! Is your tent a Vango Hydra? Great video, you have a new sub too, mate. Atb. Bri.
@@Glossopwildcamp Thanks Bri, appreciate that 👍 Yeah the Hydra 200, it’s a solid little tent.
Awesome video! That's hardcore camping for sure! Proper wintery scenes. Really enjoyed that! All the best, Jenny 😊
@@bumblejennybee88 Thankyou Jenny! Yeah I loved it, a proper experience 👌
Nice to meet u mate. 2 very different experiences despite camping not far from you! My vid will be out Sunday. Catch u again sometime 👍
@@Wild.cat.adventures nice to meet you too! Oh no, hope you had a safe night. I did keep an eye out for you on the way down but didn’t see where you were

@@samfrost8331 I’d be too embarrassed to do a live. Can’t edit it 😂 might MIGHT do a Q&A sometime!
Hi James, just about the perfect camp that with just a bit of snow in the morning. Looks like the same tent Hengist has and he always says he gets a good nights sleep in his. Yes I remember Tokyo behind the Snake inn and when we got back the road was closed with people skiing, ATB for 2025. Cheers
@@DaveGoodman1959 Cheers Dave. It’s a cracking tent, don’t think it’s the same model, but the shape and design is very similar. All the best to you too 👍😊
Great watch that James, love a snow camp! I do the same as you, never go far when I've got the heavy winter kit on. All the best for 2025, look forward to your next video.
@@PhilWaud Thanks Phil. Yeah it’s hard work dragging yourself through that snow, all the best to you too! 👍
Lovely video James. It's nice being out in the snow ☺
@@carriehikes Great isn’t it, it’s so peaceful. Thanks for watching 😊
Top video James. I'm off up Kinder tomorrow. The forecast is showing snow, so I think the crampons will also be packed in my bag. Thanks for the video mate.👍🙂
Yeah I think you’ll definitely need them! Stay safe up there, thanks for watching Steve 👍
Nice on mate, I couldn't wait to get up this morning and get out in the white stuff
Can’t beat it can you, thanks for watching!
Brilliant that mate 👍
Thanks for watching mate!
The joys of the Trent and getting boxing with flooding😫 Glad you made it through. I used to work at West Button power station about 24 years ago. Love the site😊
Thanks for watching Deb. Yeah the Trent never fails to throw up a surprise!
Nice vid mate, never really thought of history side of things normally to busy dragging fishing gear from a to b😂
@@overthehilloutdoors been there plenty of times 😂 cheers for watching mate, hope you’re doing well 💪
@Takingawalkwithmybestfriend all good mate just sat in hospital waiting for blood tests, I'm sure they have more of my blood than me🤣🤣

Brilliant mate I fish just at the back of wear those sunflowers are it's one of my favourite places not just for fishing thanks for posting
Thanks for watching! Can’t say I’ve ever fished the river there, but I’ve spent many happy days on the bank up towards Dunham, Clifton etc
Hi James, some fascinating information there and I loved the drone footage. ☺
Cheers Carrie. Still very much a novice with the drone but I love the different perspective it gives everything. Might be a little obsessed with it 😂
Some cracking views there with the atmospheric clouds! Great drone footage, too! Glad you found a way round the watet logged footpaths. I hope they do keep some of the chimneys... it is a part of history and should be preserved! Great video! 😊
Thanks for watching Jenny! Yeah it’ll certainly be strange not seeing the chimneys and cooling towers if they do all go.
I agree think of the trent valley think of the tower s, I think they're going to look back and regret there rush to get rid of King coal, I love the trent valley even the industrial parts have a beauty
Nice to see your local stomping ground...I have walked from Torksey a couple of times...all a bit of a blur but i remember visiting a real old church...good stuff .
Torksey is one of my favourite local places to have a wander. Thanks for watching mate 👍
Very enjoyable little stroll along the Trent. Looking forward to your jaunts around Lincoln as well so take care.
Thanks for watching mate. There’s a few more Trent bits and bobs in the pipeline too!
Nice video James. Nice place for hiking. Thank you for sharing. Wishing you a Happy New Year 🥳

Love finding out all these little snippets of history and info! 😊
@@bumblejennybee88 thanks Jenni! 😊
Every day’s a school day! I never knew that!
Reason enough to crack a tub open 😂
Why aren’t there many more of these??? Many old miners say we have enough coal to last us for 300 years. WTF are we being forced to use imported Gas and oil at such high prices just because Margaret Thatcher and the Tories stupidly sold off our own North Sea gas and oil years ago, Now we’re paying over the nose for this crap now, gas and oil companies are making millions off our backs and we pensioners are freezing and dying as a result. 🤬
Ministry of Defence litter. They just dump their old rubbish without conscience. It's everywhere!
So how many can point to the actual chimney and not the cooling tower?
Colossal beasts! 😮
Awesome drone footage! 😊
👌🏼👍🏼
Where exactly is this?
Great to come across another James on UA-cam! That's earned a sub from me alone haha. Great video mate, subbed and looking forward to checking out the channel.
@@Roam.Outdoors Ha! Thanks for that James, appreciate it 👍👍
Hi James, I completely agree with you about Lincolnshire- it has a quiet beauty all of it's own. It is underrated but that does mean it's free of all the numpties that you encounter when you go to the Peak District! I must get back to walking the Viking Way. I'm looking forward to your forthcoming Lincolnshire videos ☺
@@carriehikes Cheers Carrie! You could go for a walk on the moon and still come across a numpty 😂
Everyone loves bagging a Trig while on there outings 😊 I'm not sure you would have got the drone up , I'm pretty sure it would be a No fly zone. Well done mate 👏
@@hillsoutdoorsadventures cheers mate. I checked on 2 different apps and both said it was free to fly in, surprised me tbh. Still didn’t want to risk it though. Never know do you.
What a fantastic walk immersing yourself in the beautiful landscape! Really enjoyed that... especially the mud! I do love a walk where mud is involved 😂
@@bumblejennybee88 Thanks Jenny 😊 not a proper walk if you go home with clean boots!
Lincolnshire and proud! That’s a great walk that one. Feels like another place entirely in that small valley area. There are always cows hanging about though. Had to jump in a hawthorn hedge once as a last resort. 😂
@@HikingForHealth1 Yes! 🙌 I clocked the cows, they were in an adjoining field thankfully 😅
Always muddy along that valley...done it many times from the Ramblers carpark near Nettleton..always worth straying off the path to visit Lincolnshires highest point
@@atrampinthehills.841 it’s a cracking little route mate 👌
Agreed mate Lincolnshire is massively underrated, I looked a viking way as a future thru hike. That woodland screamed wild camp. Top stuff as always 👍

Interesting looking walk i need to check it out on the map to see where you were so i will use that Golf ball structure as a guide. I would be interested to see more RAF stuff as Lincolnshire used to house Lancaster Bombers i believe and that would be well worth a look.
