A Heron and its Evening Antics | Black-crowned Night Heron
Herons eat fish, but this immature Black-crowned Night Heron supplies his needs with a dragon fly (0:25). Evening time is the time of day that these birds start to wake up and fish. As soon as the sun starts to shine yellow on the reeds, this little heron is up stabbing sticks, jumping around and stretching his wings. To learn more about this heron, check out the links below.

Black-crowned Night Heron | Mini Film - Episode 2

Shaking and stretching is among this heron's favorite activities when it gets dusky outside. This Black-crowned Night Heron also loves fishing at night (hence the name). Although when I filmed him, he looked to be practicing with water plants instead (2:30). One time I observed this quirky heron strangely shaking its bill in the water! (1:06) The longest lived Black-crowned Night Heron was reco...
Baby hawks in nest! - Red-shouldered Hawk | Mini Film
Переглядів 514 місяці тому
Watch AD-free on my website: jonathanmichaelvideography.com/ We've been searching for several years for a hawk's nest and finally found one just across the fence of our property. These cute baby hawks hatched around late April and fledged late May. The parents made many visits with food but didn't stay long. We checked almost every day, waiting for the first flight. The last day we went to chec...
Black-crowned Night Heron | Mini Film - Episode 1

My website: jonathanmichaelvideography.com/ I had lots of footage from a couple years ago when this immature Black-crowned Night Heron came around our pond for the summer. I was saving up for a compilation in the hopes it would come back, but it never did. Thankfully, this little bird was kind enough to let me come close to it (unlike most of the birds I encounter) so, I was able to get all the...
American Pipit - Sounds & Eating
Переглядів 1308 місяців тому
A few weeks ago we got over 5 inches of snow, so I wanted to take some video. Because the pond by our house (where this was shot) has several underground springs, the water doesn't actually freeze. If you look closely in the first clip, you may notice the steam coming off the water. American pipits nest way up in the north, mostly in Canada and Alaska. Their favorite habitat is the tundra and w...
Great Blue Heron - Fishing & Flight Patterns

My website: jonathanmichaelvideography.com/index.htm This blue heron (at least I think it's the same one) has been coming consistently to our pond for several years. Recently I rediscovered some clips of this heron I had been saving for just this sort of project. Fully grown, these large birds only weigh a mere 5 to 6 pounds. In the last clip of the video you can see the heron use its uniquely ...
Eastern Screech-Owl - Environment and A Wink

Check out my website: jonathanmichaelvideography.com/index.htm This little Screech Owl has been coming back to the same tree you see in the video for several years. The owls would only get very active after sundown, which makes them hard to film. Eastern Screech Owls come in two colors; grey morph and red morph. Red morphs are more common in the eastern states but only make up about 1/3 of the ...
Ruby-throated Hummingbird - Sipping Nectar
Переглядів 65Рік тому
My website: jonathanmichaelvideography.com The salvia plants in our backyard were in full bloom a few weeks ago. The humming birds love to feed on these flowers among the many wild ones nearby. Although more challenging to film, I thought I would try for a more natural scene rather than a hummingbird feeder. Hummingbirds beat their wings around 53 times a second and grow less than 4 inches. The...
Northern Cardinal - Eating Seeds
Переглядів 928Рік тому
jonathanmichaelvideography.com/ Two years ago we had a patch of sorghum in our front yard and there were always birds flying around and eating it. So I took the opportunity to film it. The clip with the sprigs of grass was filmed in our backyard underneath our bird feeder. As some of you probably know, there's lots of seeds that fall from the feeder so I filmed the green surroundings because I ...
Great Blue Heron - Flight & Swallowing Fish
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Рік тому
This Great Blue Heron caught this fish in our pond last year. To be honest I was surprised that he could even swallow it or that our pond could produce such a large fish. The heron's stomach protects itself from the fish's bones by very acidic stomach secretions, holding it with strong stomach muscles. By the time the bones are exposed, the acids have softened them enough so they're no longer p...

Amazing footage! That looks like a huge fish (do you know what kind?) the bird caught! The fish was struggling, but the hungry Heron managed to fully consume (alive?!) it all okay? It looked like the unlucky thing was still desperately kicking staring down that long neck! I wonder, does the large fish stand any chance of escaping if eaten in that condition? Maybe it can turn around inside the elastic throat/stomach and has a chance of survival here.
