Official UA-cam channel of Essa - "One of the UK's most intelligent rappers" - The Independent
It's not your typical rap sheet. Born in a leafy suburb, educated at a prestigious boarding school and qualified as a city lawyer. But somewhere along the way (under former name Yungun) Essa became a key figure in UK hip-hop's "golden era" with shameless party joints, cryptic love songs, bilingual Spanglish wordplay and soul-searching escapism, earning nods from the likes of Nas and Mark Ronson.

The title felt fitting for this collaborative album by myself and Pitch 92.
This is the title track and it was the first song we worked on for the project. It really set the tone.
It came about swiftly and naturally. I used a vulnerable, stream-of-consciousness writing technique, taking my cue from Pitch’s music. His production has an emotive quality that makes the words just pour out of me. This is what instantly came to mind.
He and I have a natural musical chemistry. So we resonate with each other for sure, but the plan is for the messages to resonate with the listener too. The songs are personal, but the themes are universal. We hope you feel a sense of solidarity from them. “Do you relate?!”
Resonance is available now on digital and vinyl via the good folks at First Word Records. I have had a long career, spread over different eras, and I can confidently say that this is my best work yet.
