Progress report 1948 JD A & #5 mower
More improvements to 1948 John Deere A and #5 sickle bar mower. Removed the long bolts in bar. Added the stabilizer rod to hold the bar in a safe place while moving the tractor. Also replaced 27 knife guards with new ones. The fuel tank has some rust so I added a filter inside the tank on top of the fuel bowl.

Mowing some alfalfa to check how the A and the mower are performing. I may need to fine tune the governor on the A.

Soon I will be attaching this #5 John Deere mower to the 1948 John Deere A tractor. Last fall I drained the oil in the transmission, installed new gaskets, cleaned the old grease and oil off and put new 140 weight lube back in. I need to repair part of the lift arm and get a carriage bolt for the inside skid plate.

1948 John Deere Model A fixed the leaks. Gasoline was dripping on the valve cover. I put thread sealer on some of the threads.

1948 A running. Walked around to get a good view of the almost finished unit. I still need to install the clutch pulley cover. And adjust the left roll-o-matic timing mark.

1930's Caterpillar grader with power control.
Переглядів 2633 роки тому
Trailer type road grader. A Caterpillar grader from the 1930' or early 1940's. I need to do more research. The grader number is 5E52. I do not know the model number. It has a one cylinder air cooled gasoline engine that powers the hydraulic with mechanical controls. The controls operate the wheel lean front and rear, the steering, the circle, the side shift, and the blade lift left and right.
1948 John Deere A hub puller
Переглядів 1493 роки тому
Dave built this puller for the rear hub on the 1948 John Deere A tractor. Dave was the builder and the narrator. This puller utilizes the hub clamp from the tractor. The screw fits inside the hub so it will pull the rusty stubborn hub the full length.

Rear wheels are removed from axle. Felt seal and retainers to be installed. Good home made puller for rear hub. Cork seal replaced on crankshaft at flywheel. And temporary fix for coolant return tube. !948 John Deere A.

1948 John Deere A first start.

Today is the first start for the reconditioned John Deere A. Dave helped get it running. We had to fine tune the Battery to starter connection and tighten the fuel connections and pour a little gas in the tank and start it. It runs great. YEA!

WTF are you doing to the pony motor?
John Deere manual says to check both engine oil levels with the dipstick screwed all the way down
Excellent video and tractor. Thanks for sharing
As a blind person I really do enjoy watching your videos. You describe things very well and I very much appreciate it. Thank you so much for making my day just that much better.
Thank you very much for the video!! I have the same allis chalmes Speed Maintainter too, 10138 Serial number here!!!
I have that same blade for my 45 loaders, never used it , just sits in the barn. This set up is about my third or fourth option for snow removal. Never got past the garden tractor with three way blade this year. Nice set up, thanks for posting.
It's geat to see the old technology. My father had a Farmall 400 Diesel that started on gasoline and then swapped to diesel after the motor warmed up a bit. May have been the same motor as this TD. As a kid, I liked the smoke rings the old tractor made when Dad switched over to diesel
Great video,nice tractor.
Beautiful tractor and in great shape. I had a 1957 720 John Deer diesel wide front electric start. Loved that tractor. I got well over 4000 hours of seat time on that old girl. Although the pony start may have had an advantage over the electric start in our Iowa winters, I wouldn’t choose the pony over electric start. Just my personal preference Thanks for sharing this gorgeous beauty with the world!
Dude!! WTF are you doing?😳😳🤔
Serious concerns for the operator’s competency.
I’m picking up an MT tomorrow as a project for me and my boy to work on
Sweet!
The LJ uses the same sheet metal as this truck, but it is an NR military vehicle. One of many models that Mack built for the military in WWII. They built at least 9 varient NRs and this may be an NR9 as it has the all steel cab. There were....NM,NO,EH Flat bed,&tractor. I think there may have been smaller numbers of civie models for specific non combat roles
Very likeable video. Thanks for sharing. Is the Ammeter working properly? I noticed that for the most part it did not seem to be charging. Or maybe that was just my perspective.
best sounding tractor ever
Get rid of the cable and replace it with a rod, about 3/8 diameter, with a bolt welded on the end going through the cutter bar. Weld a short rod to the nut that screws onto the bolt on the rod. This will be much safer than the cable. Also cut off the long bolts stinking above the nuts attacking the guards, they will catch the hay and plug up the cutter bar.
Thank you mike I got a rod to replace the cable on ebay and I will replace the long bolts in the mower with short ones.
Very nice TD-6 . Own a WD-6 myself .
Is yours still 6 volt or did you convert it? My uncle was considering converting his.
This MT is 6 volt. Works good.
@@richardestey7739 his kinda starts slow and I'm wondering if I should consider rebuilding the starter. It does start ok though. Our little ford jubilee sure starts good for a 6v system.
cat engine😊
those are not hydraulic snap over centre hard on wrist if they wore out
completly wrong most pony wore out shuting off too soon fuel washed cylinders down shut fuel off let run out of fuel 9:04
Try that with a tesla😂😂😂😂
My how things have changed! I get to run 15' center pivot disc cutter behind a 150+/HP tractor now. Only thing the same is the color. I started out with a JD 1209 behind a JD 2840, and I thought I was making hay!
You chopped a bunch of alfalfa and some weeds , lots of weeds .
Love those A’s
Lindo!
I didn't see him shut down the pony motor.
Nice I H. Porch chairs , sounds like pony was running in video, however 730 is a nice machine.
the JD 730D would be the only John Deere I'd get because they are pretty cool for a John Deere
Looks like your pony needs some serious work.
needs lessons in how to start one for sure,we had one not even close on proper way
Hey didn't dad a T 9 ????
So, does the tank come off with the hood, or can you unbolt the tank supports and lift the hood off leaving the tank in place?
Fuel tank has clips and carriage bolts to attach it to the inside lip of the hood. Remove the nuts (4) from the bolts and lift the bolt up and pull out on the lip of the hood and lift it up. The front tank support drops down a little but the tank is still supported by the rear one. One person on each side lifts and pulls the hood away from the area where the clips attach. This tractor does not have a strap over the top of the tank.
@@richardestey7739 Thanks Rich, appreciate the reply.
Awesome it looks great too thanks for sharing
Beautiful tractor 🤟
Stupid to keep flipping those levers back and forth. I ran an 820 with pony start. Did no do that crap.
That is an absolute beautiful crawler i always wondered how the gas to diesel switch over worked and you explained it perfectly appreciate the ih book with the pictures of the cylinder head internals Thank You
Thank you Sir Beautiful restoration 👍
Farmed with two in the seventys both with twenty four volt electric starters liked that much better than the pony start.
That is really straightetal wise. I'm now 82, our family had one of these with the bosh(sp) pump. Thanks
Great tractor, however the Achilles heel is where the fly wheel comes off the crank shaft,it chews the splines up,to much torque.
Fantastic tractor!
Nice tractor, thanks for the video!
That was an abrupt ending to a video WOW
Do you still have this tractor?
1948 - the hood installed to complete
Richard , has is his 1948 John Deer now has look close to finished now.
