[Raw Footage] Redwood Ranger "Modified" GPS Appch RWY 05 @ Murray (KCEY), KY
This is a "Modified" GPS Approach to Rwy 05 @ Kyle-Oakley Field (KCEY) in Murray, KY. The approach was loaded into the autopilot of the Dynon SkyView HDX system by entering the waypoints/fixes that are a part of the approach as parts of a flight plan. Then the autopilot was manually used to do the step-downs between the waypoints of the approach. Actually, the approach could have been loaded in Foreflight on my iPad, then transferred into the SkyView HDX system via the onboard Wi-Fi. On the Vashon Ranger Redwood model, the step-downs would still have to done manually.

Raw footage of Vashon Ranger #100 landing at Jackson County / Sylva (24A), NC. The approach & landing were particularly challenging as the airport sits up on top of a plateau, with the runway slanting down & away from me on landing, & high density altitude! All in all, a really good experience, & a lot of fun in this fantastic airplane!

    I flew a Vashon Ranger at this year's (2024) Mt. Vernon LSA Fly-In. It was a great airplane!! I would like to buy one, but there are two items that need to be improved: 1.) Toe Brakes. This plane has a steerable nosewheel. I find toe brakes and steerable nose wheel on the same rudder pedal a bad combination. Fly a Flight Design CTLS. I dare ya'!!! 😃 I have about 25 hours in a CTLS. It has a single lever, on the center console, that looks like a small throttle. It's not a throttle. It is a combined left- and right-hand wheel brake that is actuated together. Afterall, you don't need brakes until you are on the ground. 2.) Parking brake. Man, coupled with the toe brakes, doing your run-up and other needs, those toe brakes are a PAIN!! But, the CTLS has a parking brake - a simple swing lever that will lock the brakes. AHHH!! I think I am in love - - - That's all of my 2 cents worth. A great airplane. A BIG cockpit, outstanding engine, and it flew very well.

    Inspiring story. However, according to Flightaware this plane hasn't flown since October 2023. So I guess they haven't been flying as often as they used to.

    You need better videos to sell more aircraft: Show 3 turn spins, 45-60-degree banked wing overs, side slips to landing etc... Show the side slips from both inside and outside of the aircraft, the outside viewpoint would be very exciting. In fact you should get a proper zooming video camera to show the outside view of all the mentioned flight maneuvers: that's exciting!!!!! Maybe even an aircraft to aircraft view point. Make sure to Push the limits to show/prove it is very capable and yet forgiving! Maximum side slip looks SOOO cool from a ground view. Make your aircraft out to be "fun"damentally exciting" and capable and prove of its airframe strength! Are you afraid to break it? The answer should be a "proven" absolute resounding NO and Watch this! Show us that you have full faith in your craft should you get into some really really bad turbulence. Prove of your full confidence beyond any shadow of a doubt with your own ass in the seat! Do a loop and a roll even, legal or not! That's how you sell aircraft!

      That’s great advice. I’m training in this aircraft right now and it’s an absolute blast. Your comment reminds me of what my CFI has told me several times. We were actually practicing some extreme slips today to get me familiar with rudder operation. I was tentative and would overreact and over control when I made a mistake. My instructor took the plane from me and said watch. Then proceeded to wing over in a 60 degree bank and pull a few Gs. He said, “See? The airplane can handle it. You can handle it. Don’t be afraid of it!”

    • @robertshaver4432
      @robertshaver4432 Рік тому

      @@Stumpchunkman226 Side slips can save your life in an engine out circumstance. Being proficient with them allows you to pick a field and come in high to offer an escape if you've picked a foul field that looked good from afar/above. this keeps at least "one" last ditch "better than worst" option open. fly safe and prepared via proficiency my friend! Cheers: Robert Note: side slip practice can result in engine failure by the fuel pickup line in the tank becoming dry, if so level out, set throttle to start position, full rich mixture and fuel pump on, then etc... The prop will likely be windmilling so no starter will be needed if windmilling. (It'll take a moment for the carburetor to fill enough to get fuel to the motor) If that doesn't do it then: engine out checklist. Be ready and practice side slips with at least semi-full tanks as a precaution to the above. Be safe my friend! Still further the pickup lines are likely on the wing root side so if sideslipping with the right wing high you should probably be on your right side fuel tank. Maybe check with your mechanic or aircraft manual on this thought.

      @Stumpchunkman226 Рік тому

      @@robertshaver4432 thanks, Robert. That is excellent advice, and my CFI was keeping an eye on this. After slipping to one side, the fuel gauge would give erroneously low indications. We would return to straight and level flight and the tanks would balance themselves out. The Ranger draws from both tanks and doesn’t have a L or R side selector.

    • @vashonaircraft2628
      @vashonaircraft2628 2 роки тому

      The bars are for structural integrity, & the fuel lines run along them from the main tanks to the header tank. Everyone finds that you don’t even see them again after flying the Ranger for about 30 minutes, as your sight focus should be outside of the airplane anyway. They do come in handy as a horizon or “ground reference” (bank angle indicator) when making turns in the pattern when it is critical for your focus to be outside the aircraft. But no worries, the beauty of the LSA’s is that you can always find one that better suits your needs & checks most if not all your boxes. Good Luck!

    • @homomorphic
      @homomorphic 2 роки тому

      Being trained in human factors engineering, I have learned that objects in the near field that are not in the focal area will essentially disappear. The human mind is brilliant at "photoshopping" these type of artifacts out of your view. The way this works is that your eyes are not stationary, they move constantly and those differences in position allow the brain to replace the object with what is behind the object. Everything you perceive is actually delayed by ~100ms to allow the brain to do this image processing. The net result is, that unless you deliberately focus on these bars they will literally (and I do mean literally) not be present in the image that you "see".

    I ordered my Ranger after talking to Tom at Sn'F 21' and took delivery in January. I spent a week at the factory and then flew the airplane to the other end of the USA in Florida. It flies great and cruises economically & effortlessly. The owner, designer, factory team, wrap designers and the entire purchase process are everything you would hope for in an all USA product. My Ranger will be basking at Sun n' Fun 22', so do come by and ask your questions of a Vashon rep or myself if you can catch me.
