I was given an 8141 Pennsylvania set by the historical society in the city where I live. It sat in the attic of a house ( now a museum) built in 1864 for more than 40 years. The engine and tender is sitting in the box on this video.

Weird question but, does the locomotive actually have a smoke unit? I know diesels don't in real life but I thought Lionel started putting them on certain diesels?

@cameroneverhart6443 This one does not, I believe lionel started putting them in to represent diesel exhaust around the early 90s

@@davidstrainsandlego I just got this set :) Unfortunately there's this bad grinding sound most likely from sitting too long. But, I think I may have fixed it by added two drops of oil to the pullmor motor armament. But, there's still some drag sounds and it doesn't pull the best. It is pretty heavy which is cool.

I have a complete figure 8 American Flyer trackset, that is completely rusted but renewable with hard work maybe. I doubt if it’s insulated too? I also have a multi tap transformer of uncertain functionality that I was taking to Goodwill in the morning. Total Relic. Want it?

I still have my original polar express from 2004! I love it. It still works. I would probably have to get the fix the pickups though since I noticed that it has some difficulty getting power in certain areas of the oval even if I use the new fast track that I bought recently

I bought the original set for my older brother's kids when it came out and they run it around their Christmas tree every year. That first set may be the least detailed and have the fewest features, but it was a generational gift as my maternal grandfather had a lot of Post War Lionel trains, my mom and her siblings played with them when they were kids, my dad had an old Marx O set in a tilt down cabinet that was really cool, and I have a large collection of my own. O gauge trains and Lionel Trains in particular are part of my family's history...especially around Christmas. I remember reading the book as a child and I remember seeing the movie for the first time. I don't have the scale and fully detailed Polar Express and I never will as the scale models with all of the bells and whistles don't interest me, but give me a simple oval of track and a train to run and it starts to feel like Christmas to me.

I had one of the 1st gen Polar Express engines & was rly disappointed. Ran like crap, was kind of a crap locomotive. Sold it and bought a 1950 1st gen 736 Berkshire with 12 wheel tender. Lionel screwed up and didn’t use the audio whistle directly from the movie that would’ve been perfect.

Most people always complains about the Polar Express being creepy and a bad film, but seeing the impact the film has on others, like Lionel, shows the legacy it has. I love the Polar Express and believe it wouldn’t have gotten so many toys and attention if it were a true failure.

Headcanon: All of the Polar Express rolling stock is canon, therefore whenever we see the 19 coaches on screen those are just the Lionel Add-ons. While the other Trains that are from the Trademark “Polar Express” but are not Berkshire’s are trains that work in regular use in the North Pole, but are never seen on the film.

The MPC era may have not had the build quality of the Lionel post-war trains, but it produced some colorful and nice sets for kids in the 1970’s. Some trains were actually pretty good.

I've got a decent sized postwar collection but was never much of a fan of the Santa Fe boiler Hudsons. They run fine but the casting is kind of plain and makes a weird resonating sound that I don't care for. However this version with the Baldwin discs and streamlined tender looks really nice. And don't fret the mismatched engine and caboose roadnames. Lionel was notorious for that through most of the postwar era.

When buying on line you have to think of the freight as a cost of doing business. A lot of times you'll find that the great online price plus what you get charged for freight equals about what you would pay in a store. Selection is the big on-line advantage, especially for hard to find repair parts, which Trainz. is really great for.

Very interesting. Lionel used the basic drive-train on a number of locomotives. I have a 2025 and a number of 2026's. The 2026 always had the spoked drivers and they changed all of the steam engines to spokes for MagneTraction and I don't know the reason. Strangely, the Baldwin Disc's were 1/8" larger in diameter than the spoked wheels. I don't care for the 1950 modifications, adding that 4-wheel trailing truck and removing a bit of the drive-rod detail. The only reason that I can think of for adding the four wheel trailing truck, is that it was cheaper to manufacture than the two wheel, with the cast side-frame. Either way, the increase in traction from the nickel-rimmed drivers should have been enough. I don't have any of the later 2026 or 2025/675 locomotives and I doubt that I will every buy one. An excellent review and video, as always.
