    It’s probably mostly chromatic, but missing low G sharp and B flat (speaking as if the chanter is in A). A chanter, and mainly, reed that plays a B flat by putting the pinky down is very rare- I feel like I didn’t see you play any G sharp on this one either, my preferred fingering is play E but lift the thumb. That has had the best results

    Wow, surprisingly good for plastic pipes! As a piper and a 3d printer, I'm pretty curious about these. Some kind of fancy material for the drones or just PLA? I'm inclined to either print myself a set or pop those synthetic reeds into some beginner blackwood pipes I have. Are you playing Ezee's or some kind of plastic reed in the drones? And which brand of reed is that in the chanter? I wonder if I could rig it up in Bb. I noticed that before you put the 3d printed drones in, when you were just using the plastic chanter reed, the sound was a bit better and more ever- are the drone reeds take more air now? You were blowing the top hand well with the old drones, but it's cutting out a lot with the new ones (and hi G is sometimes underblown enough to go sharp) just an observation!

    • @abbaralph2011
      @abbaralph2011 28 днів тому

      @@magnusstone hello, they are pla. The drones reeds are hitching high resonance plastic drone reeds. I think I could probably get them to b flat if I felt inclined. These sound about 100 times better than I expected them to hahaha. I mean still nothing like a proper blackwood and cane setup, but far better than it has any right to be for 3d printed plastic, and a plastic chanter reed no less... I agree that your D is sharp, also perhaps your low A. I'd be curious to see how these handle the heat in Portland. I have to imagine they'll reach stratospheric pitches but perhaps not! My band was in Mt Vernon last weekend and the heat and humidity made for a challenging day. We usually pitch around 482, 483, but hit a whopping 489 that day. Same chanter as you but with cane reeds, and all of us are of course using wood drones.

These pipes being something of a novelty I was just curious and offering my opinion that they sounded better than I expected them too, pretty good even! Generally plastic pipes are seen as being not very good, especially plastic chanter reeds, but your setup defies that notion. Apologies if my original comment came off as a little rude. That was certainly not my intent. As for mentioning the tuning, I just know that if my pipes were a bit out to the ears of other pipers, I'd like to be told as much. That's awsome!! I'll tell you a quick story right now as a blind piper. My first set was a Naill plastic bagpipe from August 2013. I loved that set, except when I finally heard Alastair Dunn playing a set of Hendersons the tonal quality just got me HOOKED on getting Hendersons because of the bigger bass sound. My Naills had far too much tenor sound and far too little bass. However,I was somewhat "forced" by other pipers to get Blackwood pipes, and I've only heard horror stories about Blackwood pipes, that somehow only tough blind people or sighted people would be the only pipers who'd be able to handle ABW pipes. Seriously, legit, my sighted nonpiping dad does all the maintenance for me, LOL. Once my dad dies, I'm definitely selling my Blackwood pipes. If pipers hate the fact that I still play plastic when I finally move up to grade 1, I'll honestly tell them that I'm blind and that's all I can work with on my own, now that my dad would've been too old to take care of them. If I had my way, I'd immediately sell my Blackwood pipes and replace them with RG Hardie Poly pipes because they've got more bass than even my current 2018 Peter Henderson pipes, and I really think Blackwood pipes are like a regressive tax as I learned about in an Econ class. More expensive and they're worse than plastic in my opinion.

    HOLY MAZZILLO I can't tell this reed from the tonal quality of cane reeds!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You've definitely convinced me to go to an all-synthetic reed setup for solos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THen I won't have to worry about Piobaireachd LOL. Very very similar to cane. Legit, if Mark were to be taught how to make Italian bagpipe reeds, his would be the tonally best syntehticsynthetic reeds for Italian pipes too. I'm serious. Synthetic reeds in Italian bagpipes, especially on the higher chanter, sound tonally worse than cane. But for the lower chanters they are much more difficult to tell apart. And full circle, Mazzillo is the best Italian bagpipe maker in history.

      @@abbaralph2011 Here's the real story. And don't be afraid to ask me for help if you're interested in getting a zampogna. I have contact with several makers. Scaldaferri says that in the 1880s, when French immigrants moved to northern Italy, they brought their cornemuses with them and the Italian woodworkers started copying their instruments and called them Piva. And of course historically there was one part of northern Italy that had a LOT of French speakers, so communications with cornemuse players was of course possible. In the 1980s it became so common in Switzerland that the Swiss name Piva just stuck, especially in the Italian-speaking area of Switzerland. Whereas, the actual "zampogna", particularly the "Lucana" breed, was invented in the early 1800s. Like I said, I'd recommend the maker Carmine Dante. He doesn't have a website but he's contactable. Plus, the zampogna tradition is truly unbroken since 1800 or so. Whereas the Piva had a serious gap, so it's not really traditionally Italian.

      Also, would want to make sure the joints are nice and right and there isn’t air leaking anywhere. Also I am not playing at a high pressure, I have the reeds really dialed into each other

      @@abbaralph2011 🤣I haven’t actually ever made a video. Very nice of you to offer. You may see one from me out of the blue in the near future. I just finished reading a thread on a Bagpipes website. I took the advice there and tried completely closing the Bellows before opening it. Then I gently opened the Bellows before closing it again. I also only put very gentle pressure on the bag. It definitely worked. I used the Chanter and the Tenor Drone. Man! What a great sound!! I did this on my Celtic Carbony SSPs. They’re the easiest to play and are light. I have my Casey Pipes (in D) and my Morrison’s. I’m a little determined (and nuts?🤪) to learn these things. I absolutely love their sound! Thanks!

      @@mccypr that sounds like a great plan, to start out a with one pipe at a time. I personally don’t make a point of totally compressing the bellows each time, kind of just do it as needed and how much needed. But that is just what I have developed for myself after years of playing beloows
