The Four Seasons
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)
Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 8, RV 315, "Summer" (L'estate)
I. Allegro non molto (in G minor)
II. Adagio e piano - Presto e forte (in G minor)
III. Presto (in G minor)
Concerto No. 4 in F minor, Op. 8, RV 297, "Winter" (L'inverno)
I. Allegro non molto (in F minor)
II. Largo (in E♭ major)
III. Allegro (in F minor)
Concerto for Two Cellos in G minor
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)
Vivaldi published The Four Seasons with accompanying sonnets. They were possibly written by the composer himself. Those for today’s performance are below:
Summer
Allegro non molto
Under a hard season, fired up by the sun
Languishes man, languishes the flock and burns the pine
We hear the cuckoo's voice;
then sweet songs of the turtledove and finch are heard.
Soft breezes stir the air, but threatening
the North Wind sweeps them suddenly aside.
The shepherd trembles,
fearing violent storms and his fate.
Adagio e piano - Presto e forte
The fear of lightning and fierce thunder
Robs his tired limbs of rest
As gnats and flies buzz furiously around.
Presto
Alas, his fears were justified
The Heavens thunder and roar and with hail
Cut the head off the wheat and damage the grain.
Winter
Allegro non molto
To tremble from cold in the icy snow,
In the harsh breath of a horrid wind;
To run, stamping one's feet every moment,
Our teeth chattering in the extreme cold
Largo
Before the fire to pass peaceful,
Contented days while the rain outside pours down.
Allegro
We tread the icy path slowly and cautiously,
for fear of tripping and falling.
Then turn abruptly, slip, crash on the ground and,
rising, hasten on across the ice lest it cracks up.
We feel the chill north winds course through the home
despite the locked and bolted doors ...
this is winter, which nonetheless
brings its own delights.

"PromoSM" 🤩
I met Dr Smith at Mammoth Cave. She was a cave guide there.
It is great musical journey of your life Ms. Schein! Love you.
Janet Smith was my great-grandmother and she died not too long ago like 2 months ago I'd say but she was a really great pianist and I'm really happy I found this video
I LOVE the “I Wonder” section!!
Such treacherous passagework in movement 5 of "Move"! Precision work by Krista Wallace-Boaz and Adam McCord!
Great performers in all of the pieces. Thanks so much!
Charles Smith who is the composer of the flute/viola/piano composition, was one of my biggest “encouragers” in KMTA. I miss him and if you didn’t know him, you missed out!
The saxophone piece by the Polasheks was mesmerizing!
Please share this-keep the music going!
Such a great concert!! Kentucky is rich in music, composers, and performers!
Thank you Matthew for your composition and for these great notes! I believe you are represented Kentucky well!
Thank you Jacob and Wesley for organizing this lovely musical tribute to Beethoven!!
The 'f' I played in the bass was 1 octave too high.
Link to "Tempest" Sonata, 1st movement, played on this piano: ua-cam.com/video/xcW-K1CPFLY/v-deo.html
Ann's great, natural phrasing reminds me of the lecture about rhythm and phrasing by Sylvia Thereza, conference artist at our 2018 event.
For those watching and listening, following Ann’’s “talk”, is the entire LesAdieux Sonata that she recorded.
Thank you Ann, for your willingness to be our conference artist. And since that wasn’t possible, thank you for allowing us to listen to your remarks about your journey AND allowing us the opportunity to “meet” you and hear your play virtually.
Thanks again to Wesley Roberts of Campbellsville University for showing us this magnificent instrument.
Jessica is an outstanding secretary for KMTA, she either knows all of the answers or can find them quickly! Thank you Jessica!
Please contact Wesley if you would like to see this collection in person!
Thank you for the work it took to make this presentation. I hope many people will watch and comment on it to you!
Please go to conference section at Kymta.org for a hand out that describes this session
Bill, Thank you so much for all of the time it took to present this session for KMTA. I hope many people will be able to view the video and that you get lot of comments.
Great, Thank you so much for all of the hard work and time it took to produce this session and video.
Thank you Janet for your work in making this presentation possible!
Excellent presentation by a knowledgeable pianist. The disastrous trip to meet his daughter in Europe (when she had gone to America to look for her father) reminds me of shopping trips with my wife before cell phones!
Great, comprehensive, insightful, and personable presentation! I intend to check out that F minor WoO Sonata.
Brilliant, informed, somewhat brash but well worthwhile presentation, Greg!
I greatly appreciate the efforts of Zach and Nina Belle to make this conference happen. This should help us maintain a state identity, I hope!
Thanks Wes! Since these conference presentations are open to all and will stay up for a little while, hopefully they can show other Kentucky music teachers what KMTA can offer! If you like them, please share them!
