‘Figuring the Figure’ is a rejection of known architectural typologies as formal strategies to design. The lecture will review the creation of a visual glossary; specifically, the use of the figure in architecture as a design tool to create a language that can be adapted for use in various projects. Zaid Kashef Alghata is founder of House of ZKA, a collection of architectural explorations that ...

A giant yawn
I'm a second year architecture student and I am currently writing an essay for my history module on Ray Kappe and his approach to design as well as his foundations and early life. This video has been incredibly insightful! Thank you!
Gehry between Practice and Project ?
Gehry is practice nowadays
Johnson a practice Architect ?
Its applied art ya ding dongs. There are no theories since nothing is provable but only ideas. Only pretend man made (screwed up as much as man is capable of) complexity since art does not need to make sense
Applied art major pretending to be sophisticated

Fantastic interview. Wonderful man. Thank you for this.
The idea that architecture and art lie outside a fully explainable analysis is highly appealing to those of us who imbue those disciplines with a capacity to transcend materials, context and functional considerations. Mystery in discovery = a radical approach particularly as buildings are usually seen as episodes in establishing clear typologies and a progression of successive precedents.
Ignorance should never replace intellectual rigor
@@bv32ification You'd love sitting in on the juries at SCI Arc. We'd go for hours in examining the entire generating process that each student took to arrive at a solution. Every once in a while, just clear out of the blue, someone would tap into the beyond with true inspiration. Tom had a real talent for being an instigator.
Great content and conversations , keep it up
Really enjoyed this conversation.
I just watched the 2017 TED conference video. I post a comment and would like to reach out to everyone who has watched or hasn't watched it yet. I take the opportunity to do it here : Unfortunately just a few architects have ever heard about Antonio Sant'Elia. He was an Italian architect and a key member of the futuristic architectural movement. He left almost NO architectural works completed and is mostly remembered for his bold sketches and influence on modern architecture. Certainly the experiences, perhaps, architectural delusions of Mark Foster Gage, even if not executed, will be a milestone in this same bias. The history of architecture thanks you !!

what is the name he talking about in a minute of 32?!
Paul Marie Letarouilly
@@houseofzka9420 amazing I just spent 30 minutes googling that by the wrong spelling. And here is it. Thx!
For the benefit of those high school kids interested in this profession, there is rampant fallacy held by people including myself before I entered architecture school that architects are technical people in traditional STEM sense in addition to working with aesthetics but that is complete false. Architecture education in US is 99% humanities discipline i.e. art, history and english with virtually no science classes to receive a diploma. If one look past often grandiose declarations (particularly known) architects make about their profession, those most satisfied with their job tend to be dim witted science wise and university education is all amalgamation of art/history/english majors. I regret graduating with this pussy degree where architects office environment can be very petty & stifling. If you honor STEM, best to stay away. Cream does not necessarily rise to the top in this profession i.e. you have to be buffoonish and sell yourself. Also many so called known architects are not from best undergrad schools including this ding dong fella. That should tell you something.
Many confused people throw around false equivalency by comparing Pritzker prize to Nobel prize. Pritzker prize is just a vanity project and is a branding effort for wealthy Pritzker family name. Moreover, the prize committee is composed of mostly random buffoons who have no knowledge of building design and hence the prizes has no credibility. Its akin to trash collector in Nobel award selection committee making award for physics. Architecture is a more a humanities degree than anything. Almost all top tier us college or university do not offer this degree for a reason. Harvard graduate design school has lot of people from second, third rate undergraduate schools because most kid smart enough to get into top tier undergrad schools are too intelligent to get into this non technical profession.
Youre copy pasting your comments from different videos. Im following your comments stop spreading your disdain to architecture if you can not and will not see the value in it you bum.
Arrogant as sh!t
fuck this guy for destroying Ray Bradburys house!
the sound is very bad
apologies, we will work on it for upcoming interviews, headphones help in this case.
His English SUCKS... he is the CANTINFLAS .. from. Argentina... still cero xefiro build project...
Not all architects build, some progress the way we approach the discipline. There are many architects who have built projects and contribute nothing. Also, a person should not be judged by his English, as he's mother tongue is Spanish.
can't stop smiling and laughing watching Mark speaking and laughing. Really like the part he talked about the "digital guys" in schools.
What an interesting dialogue
Thank you!
great stuff man! I appreciate the effort that went into making these.
I’m so glad he didn’t go into the pedagogy of an internal discourse between what is interstitial in a poetic likeness to Gestalt theory and what some might call a social, political tumultuous relationship we all can sense and must respond to responsibility as architects. One on one he doesn’t speak like that. No one should ever communicate like that!!!!
In this environment, a one on one dialogue, where he can’t rehearse his answers, TM actually speaks comprehensible English. When he’s not lecturing from a rehearsed speech filled with architectural jargon, you can actually understand him. As an educator he does an extreme disservice to his students and those looking for inspiration by pouring on the heavy esoteric jargon-heavy language. Get TM one on one and you realize he speaks like a normal person. His desire to create a mystique around his concept and make his ideas seem bigger than they are when lecturing to mostly young college age kids is really lame. Just keep it real like you did in this interview.

What do you want people to know about your work? Bricks, steel, concrete or some interesting story behind it?
@RakeRocter wrong answer. If you need bricks, steel and concrete, go study ingeniering, construction. In architecture, there has always been a story.
had Thom Mayne as prof in Vertical Studio a very long time ago and that jargon-tendency you point to was just as evident then, just part of his personal/professional armor as a self-mystifying "mystique"
love your interviews, keep it up

Thank you for these videos. The interviews are fascinating
