That's just whataboutism though. The club is certainly at blame. But that doesn't change the fact that Kalvin Philips got a contract, came in and then started coming to training overweight. Never seems to try at training and has 0 mentality. In fact, I think the club have been absolutely terrible in the transfer window in recent years. The Cup Winners Cup used to be second to the European Cup. The UEFA Cup (now Europa League) used to be the third tier. But that changed when the Champions League format was introduced. The Cup Winners would usually finish in the top half. Suddenly, a lot of cup winners were playing Champions League instead. That led to teams as low as the Quarter Finals qualifying for the Cup Winners Cup (when previously, it was always the winner. Or the runner up in case of a double winner). This made the Cup Winners Cup lose all its prestige, so it was merged with the UEFA Cup. Not removed, but merged. Which is why if you win your domestic cup, you qualify for the Europa League unless you finish top 4.

That might work to lessen the blow on the lower competitions, but that would still bloat the UCL with "Top 5 league" teams. And besides, I think if you're going to call a competition the "Champions" League, that only champions should be playing in it.

Sorry for the late response! That's actually really interesting! Although, Man City's sell outs have probably dropped because we built the City of Manchester stadium (now the Etihad). A bigger stadium is more difficult to fill. Which is why Liverpool struggles to sell out Anfield. I think the more interesting one of the two is the average attendances! It's undeniable that Liverpool has lost a large portion of its following during the 90s and 2000s. And Liverpool's current following is direcetly tied to their recent success. I think if that falls away for 5 years, and City keep winning trophies, we definitely overtake them entirely!

I'm not really surprised when I saw the line up. 6/11 players had never played first team football for Man City. Of the 5 other ones, 1 is coming off of an injury season, two others are still trying to break through and one is the goalkeeper. The important thing in these friendlies isn't winning. It's seeing who's good and who isn't. I.e., filtering out the trash.

Bobb isn't getting into this current Man City team unless we drop Bernardo. Meanwhile, we are down on our knees for a Rodri cover. Without one, Rodri's career is done by 30. And if he gets injured mid season, our season is over. Rodri was considered trash when he first came to City. Let's be honest and admit that we haven't been watching every game Bruno has played. Whilst our scouts most certainly have. A new 6 is a necessity. Another midfield-winger who can be replaced by one of a dozen copy pastas in our academy whilst having 3 other wingers already does not phase me to the same degree.

@@paulbrickland9625 Kimmich is 3 years older than Bruno. Kimmich is hitting his thirties, Bruno isn't. The system Pep played with Bayern is very different from what he plays now. There's reasons to want both, but Bruno is lower wages, younger and used to Premier League football. He knows the teams he'll be playing against. We NEED a DM, who we'll get unknown. Could be Perrone getting into our starting XI for all we know. But Rodri absolutely cannot be playing 30+ premier league games again this season.

One Cup final doesn't quite make you the club's greatest. Trautmann was a great goalkeeper, but certainly not Eddie's level. Frank Swift played before WW2 and is very difficult to compare anyone to. Football back then was so different. That is already true for after ww2, but before ww2? Having barely any surviving footage to watch as well? it's difficult.

While City are still the top of football they're being unfair to the rest of the footballing world. Everyone knows the leaks, the fact city are in fact guilty it's just that using evidence obtained illegally is inadmissible. They shouldn't be there and are, there is no unfairness about it.

The court later dismissed the emails because most of them were not relevant to the topic, often did not have anything to do with finances, and most importantly, could not be proven to be actually Man City's. I assume you are a respectable gentleman, so I would advice you to actually read the CAS document and see what it is about before spelling out any condemnations.

This is absolutely false from the very premise. The winner of the championship play offs receives more money than the Premier League champion. Relegated clubs receive millions in pounds in parachute payments, and surviving in the Premier League for 3 seasons is enough to get you on level terms qua TV revenue as the "bigger clubs". These clubs are run like businesses. They want to run a profit, not win trophies. A hard salary cap is a terrible idea possible. That money isn't going anywhere. These big clubs still have money. But now they have less money to spend on salaries and more to either pocket what the players won for them, or to buy more players. When people talk about salary caps, it's always so monotone. You've got to look past that.

I agree that he is a very technical player for the modern era. But I look at players like Totti and then at Vini and think "Does Vini have half the tech Totti has?" Even if I say yeah, Totti was a midtable player for almost all of his career. The levels were just so much higher back then. Vinicius is so talented, but the modern rules have led him to focus on developing physical skills over technical ones. Same as with Mbappe. If Vini grew up in the 90s, he'd be something else.

@@alfvervaeke same level tech, different speed. Imagine messi being slower? He would be Riquleme. Also speed makes tech look a bit less fluid while being the same, similar to height making players with great technical skill look worse than their shorter counterparts. This is why taller players like Ibrahimovic, Zidane + very few others etc are unicorns, so rare to have that fluidity while being that tall.

The important part is that Messi had a very basic playing style. At least he did when he got older. But his mastery over the basics was to an extent I'd never seen before. Messi never needed speed. He utilized speed, certainly. But he wasn't reliant on it to make his way to goal. Vinicius is most certainly more reliant on speed. He can semi-consistently pull off great dribbles, but it is not like Messi where the ball is glued to his feet at all times. Now, the comparison to Messi is not helpful anyways. That's like comparing every kid who is good at maths to Albert Einstein. Instead, let's actually look at the core of your argument: Pace makes tech look worse? No, it doesn't. If you are rushing yourself and mess up your dribble, it means you're going faster than you're capable of doing. It is not that Vinicius' tech looks worse because he's so fast - it's that he's going too fast for himself and messing up. As for tall players, that is half true. But I have watched football for long enough to know this. I'm not saying players are worse because they look clunky. There is an appeal to the clunky big guy somehow phasing through challenges. I'm saying they look worse because their control is worse. They're not phasing through challenges - they are losing the ball, send it to the sky with their first touch or simply don't get brutally challenged as that would be a foul nowadays.

Being explosive =/= being reliant on pace. Messi was explosive, but that was just one of many ways he could consistently attack. Vini is consistently explosive, semi consistently capable in a lot of things. Messi was consistently world class, no matter what he was doing.

I think the biggest change is the pitches. As someone who grew up playing on terrible pitches, but started playing on better pitches as I got older, playing on a bad pitch is just exhausting. It doesn't mess with your skill as much as people seem to think, but it completely messes up your stamina.

If you don't sustain a 90+ point season, you don't win the league. Pep has created a bar that is so high that sustaining it is out of question for 30+ matched players.

I can't say much as I watch neither of those sports, but I'll assume you're right. I do watch hockey and find that hockey still has more integrity left in the sport. And I suppose that is because the rules don't favor the attackers too much... Yet.
