Tariffs in the short term might be beneficial but in the long term they won’t.. to start with tariffs are pasted on to the consumer which means the cost of goods go up. That equates to fewer sales which also equates to less sales tax. Let’s say he is successful in bringing back or creating more businesses in america because of tariffs that equates to no tariff tax.at all. I think the best course of action is an income based tiered flat tax that would reduce the IRS by at least half and make fair taxes for everyone. No loopholes no more refunds you net 10 million you pay a flat tax on 10 million you live in poverty you pay no tax.

Tariffs are government red tape used by corrupt transactional authoritarians to line their pockets in return for loopholes and kickbacks. Tariffs are taxes, and all taxes are inflationary. Taxes are literally price inflation for every transaction.

The other thing that many people fail to see, apart from the ridiculousness of having to tariff everything up to 70% to cover the income tax shortfall, is the fact that the entire premise of having the put in the tariffs is so that manufacturing will be brought back to the US. No matter what happens, the bulk of the manufacturing for what the US imports is NOT going to come back to the US, but for argument's sake, let's just assume it does. So, you get up manufacturing everything from diapers and t-shirts, to little spinner doodads and TVs and everything in between. Well, what happens to the imports that will get smaller and smaller? That means that the tariffs collected will also become smaller and smaller. Where are they going to get trillions of dollars in revenue that they just lost in giving up income tax revenue?

I am Canadian, and I see this as being a real burden on the North American economy. Since the Trump victory, I have been making all my large purchases now. I was going to purchase a new Ford F150 in March 2025 but just purchased now due to future price increases. I am also doing as many high ticket item purchases before January. I am borrowing many as the interest rates are less than what the price increases are going to be. The US is going to see an economic slow down with an increase in cost of living. I am guessing that you will be seeing employment cuts in order to cut operating costs. Employees are the easiest thing to get rid of when cutting costs.
