Things to do and History of the Shelf Road, Phantom Canyon on the Gold Belt Tour
Completing our time in the Cripple Creek Mining Area, we took the 66 mile loop through Canyon City. Our trip started and ended in Victor, Colorado. We found that there is an incredible amount to do on this scenic byway. We scouted out camping areas and passed by several interesting areas that we linked below. Both the Shelf Road and Phantom Canyon has interesting history as well as great scenic views.

Just four miles from Cripple Creek, Colorado lies what's left of a Colorado boom town. The explosion of gold mining in the late 1800s went almost as fast as it began. In its day, Victor was quite the place. We explored its fascinating history and learned that the area had so much gold, the city was literally build on miles of gold mines and the city was paved with gold. Sounds like a fairytale,...

We're visiting an area of Colorado neither of us have ever been, Cripple Creek, Colorado. How on earth did we miss this great little town that has a powerful claim to fame. The Cripple Creek Mining District came to the mining party a little late, but far surpassed the claims of past gold rushes. Why we don't hear about this bit of history, I don't know. The town is quaint. It's like stepping ba...

    How cool to see some more of Dambo's Trolls! Here in Chicagoland, we enjoyed his Troll installation for quite a while at the Morton Arboretum from 2018 to 2021. One of them even stood overlooking the major Interstate highway, I-88. Like you, I enjoy exploring a good, old cemetery. I like to imagine what those people thought about or dreamed for their lives. It's too bad that one has gotten so scruffy, but it seemed the grave monuments were still in excellent condition which, to me, keeps those people's memories alive.

      So glad to know I'm not the only one that likes cemeteries. It was a bit scruffy for sure. Since there is less than 400 people who live here, I suppose that is expected. Many people consider this a ghost town. Thanks for keeping me going with your comments.

    What a cool town! I loved all the beautiful brick architecture coupled with that Old West feeling the town has. I'm so glad you love our content! The camping spots in this video are dispersed camping. The National Forest Service has designated this area for camping. They offer no services and are free to the public. No reservation is required. Simply find a spot that has an established fire pit (a dug out area surrounded by rocks) and you're set.

    Thanks for the excellent video. We drove up Pikes Peak Road in 2020. There was a lot of construction at the top for the new Visitor center & forest fire smoke reduced visibility of the valley. Glad to see it's finished. Next time we'll use the Cog Railway. Georgians..

    • @SwitchingGearsRVDiary
      @SwitchingGearsRVDiary 18 днів тому

      The Visitor Center and with the overlooks certainly improved our visit this time around. We had some haze from surrounding fires as well, but still had a great view. We had friends and family take the cog railroad and met us up there. If you decide to take it next time you're there, try to find out which side gives you better views. They told us one side was much better than the other and the seats are assigned, meaning once chosen you can't switch seats.

    Those atriums were outstanding! I've always thought of Nashville as a traffic-filled city on the Interstate that I had to go through on my way from Illinois to Florida every summer. Now, I know of many places in Nashville - outside of downtown - that look very interesting! Thanks!

      I was very impressed by the atriums. If you go, parking at the Mall will save you $10 in parking fees. Nashville seems to be a popular stop between Florida and the North. The Campgrounds were full of people from the North heading home. You know traffic is our nightmare too. I'm glad you found something that you'd consider worthy of going to here.

    I love Galveston so much!! I have been there 5 times, and am planning my 6th trip this September. I still haven't seen nearly everything that I want to see there. It's by far my favorite vacation spot. Thank you for this video -- I didn't know about the fort park on Bolivar and have never taken the ferry. I think this next trip, that will be on my list.

    We lived on Galveston back in the 70s when my husband was stationed there. It's one of our favorite places. We try to visit every year.

      It seems very nostalgic when we visit places we lived long ago. You'd be the expert on this video. Any places you'd recommend?

    I really enjoyed this week's vlog! It was a great combination of history and scenic beauty, as well as an excellent use of both video and still photography. Well done! I had never heard of Washington Oaks Garden State Park, but think I need to put it on my list of places to see the next time I visit Florida. It was truly beautiful and I can't resist those magnificent Live Oaks! Thank you for sharing your journey!

      We were having a stressful day and needed something calming to watch. Steve said put Switching Gears on. So we did. But I got 6 calls and had to restart each time so I turned my ringer off 😂

    I have lived in Fort Worth most of my adult life. Visiting the stockyards is a step back in time, but so is the bars. If you’re looking for a fight, then this is the place to go.
