Tidal power cannot be considered an industry 'sector' in isolation from wind or wave power. In order for the UK to become self-sufficient in RE, all three - wind/wave & tidal - must be incorporated into ONE 'whole-system' Marine Energies Industry, designed to share a commensurate capacity of ENERGY storage. That is to say, NO HAWTs, Wave Energy Converters or Tidal Turbine installations will in future have HVAC generators - period. They should all pump water through air/water accumulators, so that on-shore hydroelectric power stations will generate ONLY to meet demand. This is the engineering concept of RE peaker plant, which makes CCGT and nuclear plant obsolete. The nationalised industry bodies of Great British Nuclear and National Grid ESO (the FSO?!) can be scrapped and replaced by a SINGLE new power industry - British Amalgamated Renewable Energies - to deliver the BARE necessity of a universal power supply at < €0.10/kWh. The perfect FOAK for Wales, the UK and the world would be a Baglan Bay Tidal Lagoon, linking Swansea and Port Talbot. The core fabric of the dam wall would be designed for an optimal capacity of Before-Generator Energy Storage, to complement the undersea BGES of the floating VAWT/WECs installed in the Bristol Channel. The proposals for windfarms in the Celtic Sea - or anywhere else - are untenable. HAWTs are dead in the water. They will always be an operations liability.

short bursts of power generated about 4 times a day. still not sure it will work on the outflow, damage to wildlife and flows of the river Tawe and Neath not looked into, The only ones who will benefit are the construction company and mark Shurrock who owned the company and the quarry in Cornwall where the rocks for the lagoon will come from

Energy generated from hydro turbines is at least 80% efficient (generally 85% to 90%). The Dinworig power station (Wales) is about 75% for both the generating AND pumping cycles. The Bristol Channel has some of the world's highest tides. Hydro technology is very well established and very simple in comparison to many other energy sources.
