This series was decisive in my decision to join the Dutch police after high school. Now, after 30 years, I still work for the police in law enforcement and the image that Hill Street Blues gave me about police work is still correct. More technology, more modern resources, but police work is still the same as it was. The most rewarding and meaningful work in our society. Long live Hill Street Blues! Long live the police!
Michael Ironside & Col. Sandurz himself George Wyner
Without a doubt, Howard, Nick, & Renko were the comic relief of the series

When this aired, I had a friend who lost the use of his legs during the Vietnam war. He and others calling, themselves the "Wheelchair Brigade", lobbied hard to have laws passed to provide accessibility. This episode aired right when that was happening. Good for the writers for calling attention to the need at the time for equal accessibility.
"Let's be careful out there": I respectfully say this to my ambulance crew before they deploy. The Late & Great Michael Conrad will NEVER be forgotten.
You could tell that Michael Conrad was quite ill--he looked more gaunt than he did in the previous season. He entered the heavenly gates on November 22, 1983, age 58.
Ah the same gym from Rocky 1 and 2. Main Street gym. It was also in the Six Million Dollar Man episode.
Michael Conrad looks ill in this one!
Great TV Series. 😁
Is this a first run from Channel 4? Because they started showing it in Nov 1984, and Michael died in late '83... so I'm guessing this was one of the last episodes he made?
This, law and Order Criminal Intent and Mad Bull 38 are my favorite NYC cop shows.
If you move to live in The Hill Street area there is a sure fire way to make a fortune. Get the City contract to replace all broken glass in the offices of the Hill Street Police Station.
FBI special agent Fernell!!
Tour de force acting from a sublime cast and exceptional writing, plus that memorable theme music, make this my all time favourite tv show. Thank you so much for putting it up here. I really do appreciate it.
And this was when TV shows were insanely creative and riveting and in the 1980s there weren’t any endless remakes both in film and TV
@@JLee-g6w Absolutely spot on. Oh, and films weren't referred to as, “....a part of Marvel, Star Wars, Superman franchise.” The best cinema and television shows were, as you so rightly say, during the 1980s (I'll put the 70s up there too.)
I love this show man
WOW....AN ACTUAL EPISODE
Back in the 80s, my high school drama teacher told us to watch this show as a study in good acting.
First watched this series around 1980. 44 years later, it is still as powerful and engaging as it was then. A once off series that felt so real. I never knew Howard committed suicide.
Yep. The 1980s was when there was endless good shows and none of the woke propaganda we see in TV today.
@@JLee-g6w And hey! Let's be careful out there!
He doesn't. JD had a hunch what he was Howard was going to do and put blanks in his gun while Howard was taking a shower .
@@michaelrichardson6051 Thanks 👍 for the reminder. I better watch the repeats and refresh my mind!
@@michaelrichardson6051 Where in the show does it show JD putting blanks in his gun?
It's also on The Internet Archive. Not DVD quality but at least better than here.
Was watching every week on NBC until it was cancelled.
NY we just love. 🎬😃

It was wild, but people did have heart.
In my landscape design class that was.over at 8:30 pm we all rushed home to catch our favorite TV show. Half the class were watching Dallas, the rest of us- Hill St. Blues. Our teacher would just roll her eyes...😅
Don’t be ashamed of watching this show. It’s a classic 1980s TV show that influenced so many other TV shows.
No technology... no special effects... no global conspiracy... one NY borough cop station... hard, gritty acting.... amazing writing... never to be reproduced... never to be replaced...
Pure class this show 🚔
So I wasn't the only one who was wrong about the location! Started to watch this Best Ever TV Series when I was about 9, when it was first released over here. Because of the weather that was shown in episodes, rain, cold winters, hot summers, plus the subway of course, I always assumed it had to be New York City. Only a few years ago, when I started researching the show, I was surprised that it was supposed to be a large mid western city, like Chicago! Most scenes where you see the sun shine in Summer were shot in Los Angeles studios. The establishing scenes like in the opening and closing were shot in Chicago proper.
❤❤❤
Most TV shows in today’s time are trash nowadays. Only good TV shows that currently air today are Stranger Things, Terminal List and all of Taylor Sheridan’s shows.
It is not New York. Most likely Chicago. The exact city is somewhat amorphous
Fuck Dennys I am in this foe tonight 400 to last 10 days
Overall, the cat at the end of the "Hill Street Blues" soundtrack symbolizes the ever-present dangers and uncertainties of life in an urban setting, while also serving as a metaphor for the resilience and adaptability required to thrive in such an environment.
Uh, it's a pun at MGM's lion.
That’s Mary Tyler Moore’s cat who was the mascot of her studio’s logo.
Love that ending😢
Ese on es muy pero muy serio
It was a good show but dated now.
How is it dated? I don’t see this show being outdated at all.
He probably can’t get used to seeing life as we lived it. Sans smartphones & PCs.
Watching these after all of these years is like the return of an old friend! I lived for this TV series. Look at how young they all are!! Writers and directors certainly don't make this type of crime drama anymore for sure!!
Yep. Most TV shows today are insanely woke.
bad kwalitie video

Last appearance for Michael Conrad?
The greatest show of the 80s possibly the greatest show ever on television 📺
Never has been a show before or after with such an enormous cast of main characters and re-occurring secondary characters, that gripped the audience's attention throughout its entire span. The Greatest TV Show Ever.
Overhyped series.
Greatest TV show ever!
I would argue Lou Grant too! Both fabulous writing!
Greatest cop series ever x period . 80s lives 4ever xxx
In the 80s it was Hill Street Blues and ST.Elsewhere. in the 90s NYPD Blue and ER.
Too bad St Elsewhere ruined its own legacy with one of the worst final scenes of a TV show of all time and that was long before Seinfeld and Sopranos had terrible final scenes
@user-cr8dq7sc6h Yep but your still talking about it. Which I bet what they wanted 😏
In the Heat of the Night was also good.
Did that character kill himself off the show? The man with the gun?
He attempted but failed due to another cop putting blanks in his gun.
@@billjohnston4603 wish I could watch the episode that aired after this one…….

Howard Hunter Trying to Commit Suicide
I remember watching this when on with my mom a very long time ago
Same great memories. My mom and I would end up in the den at 11:30. She would iron and I would watch t.v. She didn’t mind me staying up late on a school night. I’m glad she didn’t We had some great times often talking other times just comfortable in our silence but always Hill Street Blues as the soundtrack in the background. I never knew how much I would miss those times, and my mom. I’d give anything to go back to one of those nights. I guess these re-runs at least bring back those memories.
Yes he looked awful, dying in front of your eyes
That what Chicago looked like back in the, Chicago Police was called the 2nd mob, Cops involved in drug dealing gangs,
Faye never gives up does She?
Love Hill Street Blues great show.
Too many #'s on the Wall !!! 🤣🫨😄 her bed is never Cold.!!!

I never had much interest in Hill Street Blues before I became a cop myself in 1983 as the whole scene looked a bit sordid and messy and I preferred to think of being a cop in terms of Hawaii Five O and CHIPS. Even after joining it was only the other cops I lived with that got me interested in it. While being a cop in Ireland was not as exciting or glamourous as Hawaii Five O it was not quite as raw as that depicted in Hill Street Blues but the internal police politics was just the same and just as infuriating.
Watch the show maybe you'll learn something
I carry nunchucks with me !
LMAO!!!! REALLY !!!!.....you thought copz , were like TV ?? 😅😅😅
Oh yeah, the Guards are the most corrupt police force on this planet.
This seems to have been the final episode starring Micheal Conrad who played the roll call sergeant before his death on the 22/11/83 from cancer. I was immediately struck by how unwell he looked and so did a bit of googling. Indeed this episode it seems did not air for the first time until 1/12/83 so after his death.
I was thinking the same thing #RIP
I was wondering about this thanx for the history info great show watched it with mom when it was on good memories.
His roll name was "Esterhaus", an anglicised distorsion of the Hungarian Eszterházy, that was the name of the richest nobel family in Hungary in the 19th - 20th century. Surely there was something "nobel" in Conrads appearens! One of my favorite characters in this old, forgotten sitcom....
@@laszlok53 Sgt. Philip Freemason Esterhaus Not making that up! During the wedding scene, where he is about to marry this high school cheerleader Cindy, his full name is mentioned.
@@AudieHolland I surely don't get your point. Will you please explain?

One of the few media people who actually understood the movie when it came out. Most...including me..didnt get it at the first screening.
