Suhr Badger 30 - Two Notes Captor X - PA system
Переглядів 3282 роки тому
Signal chain here is a 2007 American Standard HSS Strat (stock) going into a Boss GE-7, MXR Carbon Copy, into the Badger 30, to the Captor X, using one of the Phil X cabs, directly to the PA. I have the EQ on the PA channel set at noon across the board, very slight chorus effect from the PA.

Same setup as the first video, just using the volume knobs on the guitar for sounds ala Gary Moore around 1990.

Marshall DSL 100H vs JCM900 SLX (2100)

Not sure which one I like better....
Marshall DSL 100H brownish
Переглядів 2,1 тис.6 років тому
Marshall DSL 100H (post bright cap mod), straight in on the red channel. To be clear, this is not an attempt at a true “brown sound”, but rather my sound that I like. A bit more gainy and chewy than EVH

🤠👍
Great playing
900 for me!
I now own both and the tone of the 900 SLX is incredible. But the DSL100H is great for its versatility. I have modded mine with the “headfirst” mod to lower the bass response in the high gain channel. It makes a huge positive difference.
Tube amps need to be on for half an hour or so to sound at their best.
Sweet 🤘
Loved the 900.
Wow SL-X kick ass. 🤘🤘🤘
Gooood sound! :-) Is this the “2018 model”?
This is the DSL100H, as opposed to the current 100HR. I've not played the HR version. But it is a more recent one, made in Vietnam I believe (I don't have it anymore)
Man that's JUICY tone !!! Nice work also 👍👍👍💯
Either way....fucking GLORIOUS tone mate!
The SLX rules!!!
What did you do to the DSL to get it to sound like that? I've never got one to sound like that no matter what I did.
I think at this time it may have had the C19 mod. (Clip on leg of C19 resistor). In the end I preferred it stock. And that cab sounds awesome. I’ve been abusing it for a decade so the Greenbacks are nicely worn in.
@@BCyr1991 so basically it is stock... wow! I've never been able to get that kind of tone from that amp. How loud did you have it? I'm sure that makes a difference. What are the EQ settings? Thanks
@@Bret_Sanor it wasn’t especially loud, probably around 2 on the volume. As for the EQ I don’t recall, but generally I would set something like presence 10, mids and bass around 5 and treble 0-2
Just got one ans these amps were kind of ahead of their time....Amps then didnt have this much gain available. Pretty cool...and the pull boost options on the eq are killer
How come you get so much output on your guitar ? Are you using a boost here? On rhe marshall DSL you didnt, but it feels like you did !
No boost here either, I suspect I was running the gain pretty much full tilt, and hitting the strings hard (where appropriate) to push it.
@@BCyr1991 is just amazing man, great tones with any amp you touch! I have a x100b series IV. It has something loose, it drops volume, i move the amp and then its okay. People tell me to bias hot for more gain, for now i just boost it and is insane! Loving it!
Just went through most of your vids. This was your best tone imo.
It definitely is a good sound, but it’s a bit one dimensional and fatiguing. The volume taper also totally sucks for playing anything other than basically too loud haha. Certainly too loud for gigging in modern times.
Really great tone! Speakers?
Greenbacks! If I stray from Greenbacks, it will only be to G12H30s
Its more than a JCM800 ever wished it could be .
This rocks!
900 sounds a little nastier to me. Sounds more like a modded 800....the DSL sounds a little smoother. I prefer the rawness & chaos of the 900. What power amp tubes are in the 900....5881 or El34 ?
In a previous comment he said 6l6 :P
😮 sacrilige! lol jk sounds very good! 616 r warmer and more fat/bottomy
indeed I own a JCM900 with 5881 tubes in it \m/
AWESOME!!!😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈😁🎈
is the mid shift new/old additions worth the upcharge? in the videos I 've watched so far I can't really hear ay difference
I would say no. If I were to buy one new I wouldn't add those things.
@@BCyr1991 thanks
In this video the amp sound different or make you lose faith? Cuz that a sound i will live as if is creed lol ( with religious robes and all )
Love the SLX! I have a couple of them and they sound amazing!
50 or 100 watt?
Souvenirs by XYZ nice!
Hey man, have you tried the carvin x1 pedal ? Does it sound good like the amp?
I have not tried it, I've only recently opened my eyes to preamp pedals, and have started in Bogner land
@@BCyr1991 that sounds like a good start
Od as a booster ( 0 gain, full vol, tone knob set to taste) or adding dist?
Just as a booster as you described.
@@BCyr1991 cool tone! Having seeing your other videos , i hear the characteristic of your way of playing no matter what the amp is. If is not a botter, can you tell me why ypu part ways with it? Such a nice sound
Washa Conte you certainly aren’t wrong. When I listen to my stuff I also wonder why I get rid of stuff/why bother getting new stuff. I probably got rid of it thinking the grass was greener elsewhere. And now I’m in the process of getting rid of all my amp heads and going to a 112 combo
@@BCyr1991 such is the way of searching the tone i guess. Thanks for your reply!
C19 Mod?????
Paul Castaneda yes, C19 mod.
@@BCyr1991 what is it?
Paul Castaneda it’s basically just clipping one of the legs off the C19 resistor on the circuit board (near the input jack) and it cuts some of the high end out. I wound up putting it back and I preferred it stock. With the mod it lost some it’s “Marshall cut” while playing with my band
Thank you for this demo. What is teh weight of this amp? Thanx in advance.
I would think about 40 pounds? It’s been a while since it’s been gone. But it wasn’t crazy heavy like some other amps I’ve owned.
This tone is magnificent.
Ironically, I own the 50watt variants of both of these amps: a JCM 900 2500 SL-X with EL-34s and a JCM2000 DSL 50. Bought them 2 years apart from one another in the mid/later 90s. Both are animals and when dialed right, would stack up with the best of them I think the DSL is definitely more versatile with the classic/ultra gain channels vs the single SL-X channel but both can produce a massive, classic Marshall tone. The DSL can go slightly heavier but if you're after the Marshall Crunch, both nail it perfectly
Michael L Rakes I agree with your assessment. The DSL can do “more” than the SLX. But I think for a simple “point and shoot” rock tone I preferred the SLX. Now, my SLX was running on 6L6s so it gave it a slightly different character. But both can certainly do that hot rodded Marshall tone that people chase with big dollars.
The UK DSL you got in the 90’s is a completely different amp from this Chinese made DSL100.
I had a 900 and a jcm2000 dsl100 and from my memory I preferred the dsl but in this video they both sound great.
the jcm2000 is not the same as the new dsl100s. i actually like the 2000s but i got rid of my dsl100 cuz as badass ass as some peoples tones were, i just cannot achieve them even if i want to. idk if its build quality but when i crank it, its almost like it lost tone as if solidstate. idk man got the slx and 2000 tho. maybe i will get another dsl cheap combo and see what happens
HI men, Nice vídeo!, I see that you have and Hughes and kettner switchblade(i have the same h&k AMP), which amp you prefer?jcm or switchblade? And, which channel in the switchblade is the most close to the jcm800 Sound? Regards
They are so different that its hard to say which I preferred. I think that the "Crunch" channel would be the closest to the 800. It's worth noting that I don't have either anymore.
Rig sounds killer! Completely and utterly random question, but is this place haunted?
If it is, they are friendly so far. But the house was originally built for a Doctor in the 1880s, so who knows...
1880’s is quite a long time ago - I only ask because there’s odd stuff floating in the video that doesn’t look like dust but you never know. Any reason you got rid of the 2100 over the DSL? Sounds killer here. Ever play the 2100 with V30’s?
@@free_electron I only got rid of the 2100 (first) because I needed to clear some funds and I knew it would move faster. I never played it with V30s, but historically I've not been a big fan of V30s. As of this past summer the DSL is also gone. The Splawn is still here, but its also going to be out shortly, all replaced by an EVH 50 watt and a Boss Katana.
BCyr1991 I’ve been inside Scott’s shop in NC. I ordered and picked up some cabinets from him that I have since sold while I was in school for funds. The 50W is a beast. I run a 2203 converted 74 1959 100W and a peavey 20W for late night jamming. Any reason you wouldn’t recommend the 2100? You can get them under the radar these days fairly easily.
@@free_electron On the contrary, I would absolutely recommend the 2100 (Atleast the SLX version). Of all the Marshalls I've owned (2204, 2210, DSL, 4500) the SLX is the only one I would be interested in owning again in stock form.
I like the 900 with a great distortion pedal like the Lovepedal eternity burst.. without a good D pedal they sound like arse.. JMO though
Love the DSL. Glad Marshall brought the price down. I have a 100hr and bought a Meloaudio Midi FS to change channels and settings. It is like having four amps. H and K cab really sounds great too!!!
JCM900
I love how us guitar players are always forced into rough surroundings..unfinished walls, basements, garages....like wild animals not fit for proper living environments....
Damn that 900 kicks ass!!!.
The 2100 sounds better imo. What style of music does your band play?
Which year? Does it have B+ and OLD/NEW Switch?
2018, does have B+ and Old/New Switch
Mine is a 2017. Doesn't have the B+ swich, but has the Mid switch and Old/New switch.
BCyr1991 man! Awesome! I had one but sold it. How’s the old/new and mid cut work?
Mark Is a STLBlues Fan how do you like the Mid Cut and Old/New? Does it really make a difference and worth the cost?
@@markgooch1715 Definitely worth the extra cost to have them! The Mid switch makes it more modern for Metal tones. The Old/New switch you could tell Scott was aiming towards the early "Quickrod" tones with it. I'm not missing the B+ switch so much, but then again I've not played through one of his with it!
What's a better amp for yngwie zakk wylde and van halen tones? The marshall dsl100h or the marshall Jcm 900 2100 SLX????
I would say the DSL is better for the VH/Yngwie sort of sound. The SLX a bit better for the Zakk stuff. (in my experience, as my SLX was equipped with 5881s and had a pretty firm bottom end)
The ONLY reason purists don't like the DSL is "made in Vietnam"!!! Period!! The truth is.....the DSL is more reliable....Tube in chassis design, fuses, everything is Easier to service than JCM. It has a more modern distortion tone also. Once Marshall starts moving to China, these Vietnam amps WILL go up in value....mark my words.
Love the heck out of mine. IMO, let them complain about the DSL. That’ll leave more amps for the rest of us. You can usually find used DSL heads starting at around $400.
A Dsl won't ever be more easy to service than a plexi/jmp/Jcm800. Those are very simple amps
What kind of speakers are in there? Whats the whole signal chain?
Celestion Greenbacks. And that is guitar straight to the amp. That was the first time I ever ran the amp (I twirled knobs for about 5 minutes before recording the video)
@@BCyr1991 awesome sound there
Sounds bad-asz! Nothing like a Marshall.
I know this video is a year old, but would love to know what your settings on the amp were. I've got a DSL too.
Unfortunately I don't remember, but one of the biggest contributors to this is the C19 mod, which makes the amp considerably less "bitey" and you can add your high end back in with the treble and presence knobs, and not having them sitting around the 0-2 level like a lot of people do with their DSLs.
@@BCyr1991 thanks for the reply.
@@hummarstraful No problem! Sorry I can't be more helpful.
Sounds incredible. My DSL100HR is my favorite amp I've ever owned by far.
Perfect for dem santa cruz tones
The new HR really is a KILLER sounding amp. I have one that sits aside Bogner & Friedman amps that cost 5x what it costs and I like the pallette of tones on the HR more
The amp head that was on top sounded better to me which one was that by the way?.. I honestly must say that I really liked both, but with that said experience goes a long way cuz it could make any amp sound great!..
The top amp is the JCM 900 SLX. Both great amps. But I think I agree (Even though I don't own it anymore), I think the tone of the SLX is better than the DSL.
DeadLeopardSikCougar were you using any pedals on this demo?
@@aztecworrior79 Nope, that was straight in. If I remember right, at the time I had a Duncan Custom (SH5) in that guitar.
DeadLeopardSikCougar thanks for the reply bro!..
I also have the Bad Monkey with my AOR 100! The work awesome together
Would love to hear this in standard d tuning with some hot pickups or tube preamp running into it. There's one for cheap on Craigslist in my area. Great video, thanks!
