Smokies Symposium Preview
appetizer for our three-day event at the end of July about Knoxville’s dynamic and decisive role in the creation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. While we prepare to celebrate the 100th anniversary of when the Smokies park movement started, it appeared that GSMNP’s 90th anniversary (the date it was officially considered established) last week was largely ignored. Perhaps there is some logic to that when you consider there could be several points on the park’s timeline when the 100th could be reasonably claimed.

For the last few years, you may have noticed, we’ve been appealing to the public to help fill out Knoxville’s visual history with photographs, even random snapshots, that show the city in different eras. Although there are extensive photographic archives available through libraries and other institutions, it’s often surprising what historical researchers don’t have any pictures of-including man...

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park didn't formally open to the public until the 1930s, but it began as an idea in 1923-and not in Washington, D.C., but in downtown Knoxville. It was a giant project, involving family homes and industrial sites, first conceived at a grass-roots level. It took years of work by lawyers, financiers, politicians, artists and intrepid hikers to make it a reality....

Description The Knoxville-raised author of Suttree, Blood Meridian, The Orchard Keeper, No Country for Old Men, The Road, and The Passenger died last month, just a few weeks before he would have turned 90 on July 20, the date of our monthly program. Like few men his age, he was still very much in the news, with not one but two new novels out, both eliciting international interest, as well as ru...

Be...
