This City Built the Largest Temple in Greek History
Around 550 BCE, it became the birthplace of an architectural masterpiece-the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This temple was a monument to the goddess of the hunt and a symbol of Ephesus’ wealth, culture, and artistic ambition.
The temple’s construction was spearheaded by the architect Chersiphron and his son Metagenes, funded by the city’s inhabitants and contributions from kings across the ancient world. Built entirely of marble, it measured 115 by 55 meters, dwarfing even the Parthenon. The temple’s grandeur lay in its intricate columns, sculpted bases, and gilded decorations, reflecting the devotion of the people to Artemis.
Despite its splendor, the temple’s history was turbulent. In 356 BCE, a man named Herostratus set it ablaze, seeking infamy. Coincidentally, this act occurred on the night Alexander the Great was born. Later, Alexander offered to fund its reconstruction, but the city, proud of its heritage, declined his terms and rebuilt it themselves.
The rebuilt temple stood as a sanctuary and a cultural hub, attracting pilgrims and traders. However, it couldn’t withstand the test of time. In 262 CE, the Goths sacked it, and with the rise of Christianity, it fell into neglect, its stones repurposed for other buildings.
Today, only a single column stands where the temple once flourished.

It would figure I end up being born on the strangest day (Feb 29th) on the most warned about year (1984) on a frigging AFB!?!? 😅 I've always been a bit psychic & drawn to this prophet since I learned who she was... we joke in my family, maybe I'm the USA version. 😂😂😂 Soooo glad Trump won because I was sounding ALL the alarms!! 🥳🥳🥳🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙏🤞🏻🫶🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
