Navigating the Ballard Locks in a Greenline 40
2023 Pacific Northwest, Puget Sound, Seattle, Ballard Locks, Greenline, Seaway Yachts, Motoryacht, Saling. I've fast forwarded through this 1.5 hours of footage to capture the gist of the experience. If you've never navigated the locks, I'm certain you can learn from our mistakes and look more polished than we did! Kudos to the helpful staff.

    Thanks for the video. Quite interesting to note the difference between Ballard Lock and the locks we transited on the Erie Canal. The Erie Canal locks did not have sliding bars on the walls -- you had to grab gross old ropes hanging from the top of the locks. You did NOT cleat them -- you had to hold onto them and either slide your hands down them if you were dropping or pull up on them if you were rising. Gloves were a must!

    My dad (FX Shamrell) was on the first Schweinfurt Raid. 95th Bomb Group, 336 squadron, Horham. He talked about this raid a lot as it was the first time they went "deep" into Germany. Lost 65 planes - "we got our butts kicked" by the Luftwaffe"!!! One of the Schweinfurt videos has a full face photo of my dad after they got back. They are removing the top turret gunner and the next photo is him with blood spatter all over his face and jacket. Same photo was used in "All the Fine Young Men" and "The War" by Ken Burns. When Doolittle took over the 8th AF, he said they changed tactics from Defense to OFFENSE and with the new P- 51s they had more protection and were more successful. BEFORE the Luftwaffe got to the bombers they would dive down on them and Doolittle also unleashed a "full court press" using ALL the fighters 24 X 7 strafing airfields, railroads, storage facilities - anywhere they could find the Luftwaffe or the logistics system. He would get choked up when he spoke about Doolittle. MXS

    if they would have given drop tanks on the thunderbolts like the pilots asked for, none of this need happen. 2 years they begged for drop tanks, and were told to shut up. by the pentagon. WHY?

      Well back then many believed in the concept of unescorted daylight bombing. The RAF Bomber Command learned it the hard way when the War started and eventually they switched to night bombing. Unfortunately the higher ups in the U.S 8th Air Force were slow to learn or ignorant hence why such losses for B-17s and even B-24s.

    When they came back, the brought P-51D’s with wing tanks. When Hermann Göring saw them, he knew the war was lost. And guess what, that raid did nothing to slow production as the machinery was not damaged.

    So, it’s a year later, how do you feel about the boat? Do you use the electric drive much? I’m considering this boat but have heard that on the Pacific Ocean, the electric engines are only good for the marina. Do you find that true? Are you still happy with the boat?

    • @metilaful
      @metilaful 3 роки тому

      Great questions. I agree I would not shut down the diesels during an ocean passage with any amount of swell. Even here in the Puget sound we deal with strong currents that make me want to have that diesel power at the ready if I need it. The electrics are not powerful enough for more than a quiet cruise on a calm day. But what a pleasant way to spend an afternoon that is! Also if we’ve been cruising on electric we’d still want to run the diesels on the last leg of a longer journey to make sure we are headed to anchor on a full battery bank. Not as important if you’re going to plug in for the night. Even so, I haven’t seen another I’d rather have. It’s still the prettiest yacht in the marina. I’m told the newer models may have more powerful electrics? I don’t know. This is a 2014.

    Part of that was down to arrogance; they were warned by the RAF that the Germans would not let them go deep into their airspace without a strong reaction. They already had the technology to outfit the P-47 and P-51 with drop tanks; they were also sloppy on the radios so the Luftwaffe radio intelligence were able to hear them chattering, well before they got to the Continent, as well as pick them up on radar as they formed up over Norfolk. The chin turret on the B17G was good but wasnt a perfect solution as the Germans use of the 20mm cannon meant that they were opening fire well out of effective range of the 12.7s. the real fix was the drop tank for fighters and the decision to attack fuel and aircraft production. That's what ruined the German training system so they couldnt train enough pilots.

    • @mxmissile4588
      @mxmissile4588 2 роки тому

      Actually, great point on chatter. When my dad went to see Memphis Belle (twice) he commented that it was very well done and realistic but they did Not talk much going in to Germany as the Germans had radar and listening technology. They only talked when them were shooting. MXS

    What year is your Greenline? We’re thinking about getting one in the future and keep bouncing between the 33, 39 and 40, newer with Volvo/Penta and older with VW TDI. Would love to hear about your experience thus far. Also, how many hours? The only boat I’ve had/have is a 2002 Maxum 2400 SCR since new. Thanks.

    • @metilaful
      @metilaful 3 роки тому

      2014 with twin VW 150 turbo diesels a little over 300 hrs each now. 33 is a fabulous boat, great design. If we didn’t want the guest cabin that would have been ideal for two people. I don’t see much advantage to the 39 over the 40. 40 has more storage, larger guest cabin and twin engines. The VWs vs Volvo’s are really apples and oranges and you’ll probably decide based on what you can afford. The VWs are running great for us but of course less power and harder to find parts in the US.
