The Bessemer Steel Smelting Process | Tom Scott University Challenge / Technical Difficulties
Tom Scott being asked on University Challenge about the Bessemer Steel Smelting Process. Can he remember his own show from 7 years previously?
(Maybe York University should've taken Gary Brannan as their captain)

I'm a smidge disappointed that neither s nor f was SHEFFIELD FORGEMASTERS
"S" should have been "SATIRE!"
"It was never not a cow." It WAS a judge for a little while.
W for WELLYBOOMER
I love how there’s people arguing about every letter except p
As we all know, the Bessemer smelting process was used to make KNIVES, big boxes of KNIVES!
Finally-the ornithologist community getting some celebrity representation! As a former aspiring ornithologist, I find this content indispensable
Tom's face on being called "a broadcaster and a presenter"
He looks absolutely gutted 😂
That's the face of someone who doesn't know if he should be proud to know the answer or ashamed to know it because of a dumb Wikipedia show he made with his friends a half a decade earlier.
Though this does remind me that I'm probably due a Citation Needed rewatch...
I like how she says 'steel' as if it's simply the most obvious thing in the entire world.
😍😍😍
This backs up my theory that University Challenge (and other quiz shows) tailors its questions for the contestants to make the show seem harder. Someone from my home town went on UC a few years ago and was asked about local history, specifically a subject that we cover in History at school.
Most smart people you'll meet aren't that smarter than anyone else, just genuinely interested in life instead of drinking their brain cells away every weekend.
Shame about the steal, but doctor Kind was absolutely on fire that episode so I'm not mad about it
CD Walkman? 🫳
the nodding at the end actually had me burst out laughing. excellent
I mean you'd hope a british person would know about the bessemer process, a harder question would be asking about puddling or something
The little eyebrow raise at "broadcaster and presenter" has me on the FLOOR 😂
It's technically correct, which is the best kind of correct
Victoria 3 reference!!!11111!1
Sorry, what other alloys can you make out of crude iron?
Well, any alloy that uses iron as one of its components. Fernico, elinvar, spiegeleisen, probably a few others. As well as a lot of intermediates like ferroboron, ferrophosphorus, etc. (that are generally later used to produce some kind of steel, but aren't technically steel themselves).
@@RFC3514 Well, that was some things i haven't heard of before.
Cast iron is a Iron alloy with high carbon content for example. Generally not called a "steel". Steel is just a super broad iron calloy category. Neodymium magnets are an iron compound, idk if this counts as an alloy, but seeing as they're basically metal+metal compounds, i think it propably does. I am not an expert.
I saw the thumbnail and thought Tom was on an episode of Jeopardy! before I read the title lol
I hate Tom Scott so much.
Why?
Why tho? I mean, he's awkward, but that's not really hate worthy is it? I rather enjoy him and his videos tbh, so I'd be curious to hear your take!
explain why
Huh.
@@lawrencecalablaster568 He's like British Adam Conover. Shoveling midwit slop to the public to make infotainment. I don't like the shows but it's not really just the shows or their personalities. These guys talk to the audience as an authority on whatever subject is being discussed (even through they're presenting a dumbed down version of the truth) and the audience will inevitably and unquestioningly accept those views as their own and begin to tout them as if they came up with them. And I don't even mind that these guys have political bias, you can logically follow their beliefs to discover why they believe something and it'll make sense, but what is definitely not okay is how they'll demonize people who don't agree with and make it seem like their way is the only way which again- THE AUDIENCE WILL START DOING TO. This leads to worsening political dialogue, a bunch of dumbed down "education", and a reduction in critical thinking skills amongst the public. Why think for yourself when you can just accept what this guy has to say? I've watched these guys and I can't ever remember a time in which they've posed a non-loaded question or a varying viewpoint and I'm absolutely sure if you presented some non-mainstream idea or concept they'd blow it off as a conspiracy theory. These people (also throw in HBomberGuy, Vox, Vice, Video Essayist, Etc) are not pro knowledge, they're conformists who are pro current narrative and their duty is to shepherd people towards the accepted conclusion and away from the woods where they might wander off and commit wrong think.
This video had a better twist than an m night shamalan movie.
AND BOXES OF KNIVES
I love how startled he was at the other buzzer being pressed, Tom was in full focus mode
Her buzzing before Tom was Kind of a steel.
Tom is one of those guys who look a lot smarter than he actually is.
He was on University Challenge and did alright. He's as smart as he looks.
Depends how you define intelligence. He's academically successful, clearly able to retain and understand plenty of varied information, and most notable of all, he's able to present information in an easily digestible way to a wide audience, which takes a lot more intelligence than you'd think. By most metrics, I'd say he's certainly smart enough.
@@montyswift5661and he’s not afraid of rollercoasters!
@@peterfireflylund and now a professional cyclist and parkour athlete
It looks like he's the only one to get startled.
"Citation needed" ... edits Wikipedia... enters citation: "GARY!"
citation: Everyone's favourite Gary Brannan, Gary Brannan.
I’m imagining him yelling out “GARRRYYYY!” like an irate dude from a Saturday morning cartoon and laughing my ass off at it.
You raise me up So I can make accurate meters And BOXES OF KNIVES!!!
I want a *post-*radiation knife! Cooks the steak while you slice it!
Gary Brannan truly is one of the most quotable humans. So many random bits of Citation Needed stuck in my head because of him
W SHOULD HAVE BEEN "Why would you want that?" in sinc
Xnopyt
its like looking inside of his mind for a second
BRAIN BLAST
Very much worthy of some MYSTERY BISCUITS! (oh yeah!)
based tom scott
O definitely should’ve been ornithologist
I can't believe T wasn't 'Toast'
"Paaantherrrs?" will never stop being funny.
now i wanna sort every word of a techdif episode alphabetically
This not having subtitles is a crime
Why was w not "why would you want that" in stereo
I'd 100% watch an ABCs of just Will Seaward in the two Citation Needed eps he was in. That man's voice makes _everything_ funny.
Literally half the video was me going "if P isn't _Panthers?_ I will mark this video as spam" So... good job!
Not spam. Offensive content.
"I" should have been for "I think you'll find..."
i love the Panthers, very well done
Also knows the difference between a robin and a tit to ruin your enjoyment
And then there's the park bench episode where Tom points out tits to Matt
I was soo worried 'P' wouldn't be "Panthers?" you have no idea how happy it makes me to see it.
been waiting for a Citation Needed OOC, thanks random YT recomended
