1. Introduction
- The nephron is the functional unit of the kidney, responsible for filtering blood and forming urine.
- Each kidney contains approximately 1 to 1.5 million nephrons.
2. Structure of the Nephron
- Renal Corpuscle:
- Bowman’s Capsule:A cup-shaped structure that encases the glomerulus. It collects the filtrate that is filtered from the blood.
- Glomerulus: A network of capillaries where blood filtration occurs. The glomerular filtration barrier is composed of three layers: endothelium, basement membrane, and podocytes.
- Renal Tubule:
- Proximal Convoluted Tubule (PCT):The first segment of the renal tubule, located in the cortex. It is responsible for the reabsorption of water, ions, and all organic nutrients.
- Loop of Henle:
- Descending Limb: Permeable to water but not to salts; it helps concentrate the filtrate by allowing water to exit.
- Ascending Limb: Impermeable to water; it actively transports sodium, chloride, and potassium ions out of the filtrate, contributing to the concentration gradient in the medulla.
- Distal Convoluted Tubule (DCT): Located in the cortex, responsible for the selective reabsorption and secretion, mainly of ions, to regulate blood pH and ion balance.
- Collecting Duct:
- Collects urine from multiple nephrons and moves it to the renal pelvis. It plays a crucial role in water reabsorption under the influence of antidiuretic hormone (ADH), affecting urine concentration.
3. Blood Supply
- Afferent Arteriole: Supplies blood to the glomerulus.
- Efferent Arteriole:Drains blood from the glomerulus and forms the peritubular capillaries and vasa recta, which surround the renal tubules and loop of Henle, respectively.
4. Physiological Functions of the Nephron**
- Filtration:Occurs in the glomerulus, where blood plasma is filtered into the Bowman’s capsule, forming filtrate.
- **Reabsorption:** Substances like water, glucose, amino acids, and ions are reabsorbed from the filtrate back into the blood, primarily in the PCT and Loop of Henle.
- **Secretion:** Additional waste products and excess ions are secreted into the tubular fluid in the PCT, DCT, and collecting duct.
- **Excretion:** The final urine, containing waste and excess substances, is excreted via the collecting ducts into the renal pelvis, and subsequently through the ureter, bladder, and urethra
