rare footage of messiaen playing le merle noir

amazing, messiaen wrote blackbird entirely in the 2nd mode of limited transposition and performed it live, although he clearly wasn't very good at singing or the guitar, nor much of a performer
tristan und isolde but every time there's a tristan chord it gets faster

For three banjos and acoustic bass guitar Sorry everyone.
What a superb Album..excellent singing. Such a pity pop singers are minting money with mere 'croonery'.
What an outstanding singer
In 1965, aged 18, I joined the Royal Chorus Society and sang Gerontius under Sargent. I was probably the youngest member by far at the time. If I'm not mistaken, Ken sang Gerontius and Marjorie Thomas the Angel. Two years later, I began my vocal studies at the RAM where both Marjorie and Ken were singing professors.
youre the funniest person in classical music. how could you do this but also youre so right for it
Bravíssimo
Perfect
I love absolutely everything this guy sings. My goodness, what a fantastic singer he is!!
yeah, nice bro😁

This is so much better than a countertenor
Kenneth Bowen is really excellent. Is this the very last time Sargent conducted Gerontius?
Are you Kenneth Bowen's grandson?
Gorgeous
Bravo!!! Best voice!
Great performance, nice to see him more relaxed when the video proceeds. The piano player is also a real artist and very intuitively adapts to Gwilym. Apart from the art. I also liked the happy socks, watch carefully from 3:41
you've made something beautiful here
Quelle heureuse découverte!
I can't believe you have done this ...
Not all half dim- just kidding :P
Lol nice
😆😆😆
This makes me self-conscious.
You, Sir, are an evil genius.
I remember hearing this on the radio. At that time I was working as a journalist and the following morning I travelled to interview the composer Edmund Rubbra at his home. He also had listened to the performance and we spent some time discussing it, both of us having been greatly impressed by Kenneth Bowen's account of the tenor part for which, if memory serves, he was a late replacement. He was indeed a very fine lyric tenor, good enough to have recorded an all too sadly truncated Messiah with as major a figure as Stokowski. Such a pity that record companies did not take more advantage of his talent.
Can you please upload the complete album along with the church music with the John Hoban chorale and the London trombone Quintet.
Hi Kenneth! Good name. This is the complete album as I know it - GGC 4080 released by Pye Records ltd in 1967. Looking at my hard copy of it now!
@@gwilymbowen3344 Thank you Gwilym for the prompt reply, I would really appreciate it if you could upload the same as soon as possible.
@@kennethisaac785 sorry if not clear - I don't have anything more than what's on this video I'm afraid.
That's one of the most hilarious musical jokes I've seen so far!
7.43 LOL
thank you for this recording. My mum sang Gerontius under Sargent many times and I'm now singing it with my choir. Learning it with this feels a little like she's singing with me. I also am amazed that you can hear all the voice parts so clearly!
This is something
Frou-Frou... Wow. A.K. reference.
ahaaha
Keep up the good work!
What a treat to stumble across - and in good sound too! It's always welcome to hear Marjorie Thomas (who recorded Gerontius a decade earlier with Sargent for EMI), but Kenneth Bowen's Gerontius, otherwise unrecorded, is revelatory - especially in "Take Me Away". Are you and he related?
I agree with you about Bowen's performance - one of the best, if not the best, I've heard (vocally speaking at any rate). In fact he was the first Gerontius I ever heard (when I was about 18) but his performance made much less impression on me then than it does now!
What a lovely and precious recording. Thank you for sharing it.
