Rockhounding | Agate Hunting | Lapidary | Fossil Hunting
Welcome to OPE Rocks, we love nothing more than Lake Superior agate hunting or walking the beaches of Lake Michigan Fossil hunting. We are based in Wisconsin and Rockhounding is our passion. Recently we decided to share our rock hunting adventures with the world and took a camera along with us to document our rock hunts!
If rockhounding is your thing, consider subscribing to come along with us as we rock hunt and share our finds. In the cold Wisconsin winter, we head over to our lapidary shop and create displays, jewelry, and other artistic creations from some of the rough rocks we’ve found over the previous summer. Don’t forget to swing by our online shop as well and get yourself a piece of the action as we post most of our creations there!
Thanks for your interest in OPE Rocks and we hope to see you on our next adventure!

Rock Hunting Lake Michigan for Lake Superior Agates?
Connecticut has Nothing like what you're showing us on this beach. Of course, CT's southern and Only shore, is on Long Island (NY) Sound; so much of our beachstones are milky quartz, granites, and other related stones. ❤ seeing All of your interesting finds and taking us along on your trek. Thanks for sharing.
Another great hunt! Perfect fossils! Beautiful jaspers! The oolitic jasper was very pretty and reminds me of Dino bone! It had very well defined features ❤ Thanks for the show and tell! And thanks to Liz for the best laugh of the day with her little rawr 😂❤
Excellent hunt! Some really fantastic finds - Jaspers and fossils! That cold water agate was awesome!
Thanks! It was a good one!
I would enjoy hunting jaspers like those on this beach, so any location information you’re willing to share would be appreciated. I mostly hunt on Door County beaches that have a nice variety of fossils, cherts, granites, and some CWA’s. But relatively few nice jaspers!
Go a little further south…Algoma, lower LaSalle, not the main beach by the parking lot, head right, past the downed trees and onto that beach otherwise I also find oolitic in the Manitowoc area at basically any beach,, just keep your eyes peeled it tends to blend with the darker red rhyolite…patience is a must but you’ll find some! Good luck!
@@OperocksThanks. I know LaSalle. It’s not far from me.
So many amazing finds!!!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩 the rawr made me laugh out loud 😹
Haha 😂🤣😂
That’s what she said!! 🤣🤣🤣 that was a great little Michael Scott reference
Ah you caught that 🤣
Great finds, that Oolitic Jasper is so neat! I wish we had fossils all around us not many in the city 😂
I’m a HUGE fan of the oolitic jasper in our area, it’s not overly abundant but it’s there! That’s funny, I’m not a fan of the city but I’m headed up to Montreal next month, wish I knew a place to rock hunt there lol never been out of the country before so no idea where to start 😁
Awesome finds shown, and another captivating video, thank you!!
Thank you for watching! We appreciate you!
Good one that Jasper is awesome 😊
Right it’s such a great piece, and as fractured as it looks it’s just solid!
That stromatoporoid is sweet!
That’s a nice one! 🙌
🙌🏻
What is Variolite and what is mineral it associated with? It is a beautiful stone?
It’s basically a form of basalt that’s light to dark green with variolites, it gives it a pock marked look
@@Operocks Thanks.
Bet that piece of variolite Would have cut-polished some Awesome stones. It reminded me of either Varisite or Verdite available in the latter 1960's - 1970's, at least. Then you Tossed it away. What was wrong with it?
It polishes ok…I only threw it back because it didn’t have large ‘variolite’ markings, I did love the color of green but I’ve found much better pieces. I also have a lot of rocks lol so I don’t take much home unless it’s really good stuff 😁
Those look super cool. I also love the Lake Superior agate poster you have there.
Thank you! Love that poster 😁
The fossil soup was cool but that jasper is amazing!
Yeah I was definitely surprised by that!
That jasper looks amazing inside.
Right!!
The audience really likes the beautiful second cut❤
🙌
Dang. That jasper is awesome. Love it.
Yeah that was a surprise!
Yeah that was a surprise!
Both sweet sweet sweet!
Agreed!!
I’d like a rock that looks like ribbons of Neapolitan ice cream with a few blueberries mixed in, please.😂❤
🤣🤣
That second one was awesome. Cool finds.
Thanks!!
Between the Otter and the drake is a beautiful rock for sure..
Oh 💯 and we found them! 😄
Otters are so cool.
They’re fun to watch!
B e a util!!! Area, done the drive from Duluth a few times, before I was looking for rocks much closer!!!
🙌
Vibrant!
They’re going to shine up nicely 😁
❤
❤️
Ohhh that’s beautiful!!!
Agreed!
Incredible formations! You took right to climbing like a little kid living his best childhood dreams! I would love to see inside that little cave. Just the view from the top was beautiful! Thanks for taking us along on your adventure ❤
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it! I knew YT algorithm wasn’t going to like it much but I had so much fun making it I had to upload lol
Sweet spot🙂. There’s one right by me too …old Oakfield Quarry…east side has old quarry with vugs everywhere and west side has a huge formation..some ridge can’t think of the name…be glad to show ya sometime 🙂
Yeah for sure, I’ve never heard of Oakfield Quarry, I’m always up for exploring a new spot!
Awesome video! That place looks amazing!
Thank you, appreciate the feedback! It’s a pretty great place!
Cool beautiful 🎉🎉🎉❤❤
Agreed!! ❤️
Great video ❤❤
Thanks!
Serpentine
Great vid! Too bad your better half had to miss out.
Thanks, appreciate the feedback. I spend a lot of time editing (time I don’t really have lol) so a little positive feedback feels pretty good! Thanks again for the support
Is repelling allowed in the park? What about a hella strong rope ladder to check out the tiny cave at 10:54? Jasper Team 6 can do!
Yes, you can repel or at least you used to be able to. I did when I was younger for Boy Scouts.
That area reminds me of the river bluffs between IA, WI, and MN. Has Commander Craig of Jasper Team 6 ever been to the Lacrosse/Winona area? I think your content, filming and editing is great! Your channel is among my favorites, even though we have no idea what OPE stands for.
I’ve been to LaCrosse but it was for a college graduation many moons ago. lol so OPE is that midwestern expression when…let’s say…you bump into someone you say ‘Ope, excuse me’ or you stumble upon a pile of rocks ‘Ope…rocks’ 😁
Pretty green!
Right!
Beautiful place. You would love NC mountains.
We LOVE North Carolina!! The mountains are absolutely amazing! Our favorite spot on earth is OBX ❤️❤️
We’ve been there and yes we are in love with NC in general 😁
@@OperocksLiz mine too. The Outer Banks is my happy place.
@@patriciamilholand3585 same! We went on vacation there and my soul felt it was right where it belonged. I cannot wait to get back someday!
@OperocksLiz I understand that. We go every year to the Southern part of it. Atlantic Beach, Morehead City, Emerald Isle, etc..Crystal Coast. Plus, it's good fishing and just beautiful 😍
Dude! A fantastic tumbler...pick it back up!!
Funny story, I actually did end up keeping that one! It will be tumbled someday 😁
@@Operocks atta boy!
❤
🙌
Gorgeous 😮
Thank you!
Always fascinated with explorations of unknown geological areas in places that I've traveled! I had the opportunity to take in the Oakfield Ledge State Natural Area (West) and the Dodge County Ledge Park south of Mayville, WI. Wonderful rocks, and views (Horicon Marsh) at the Dodge County Park!! I actually had to work through the Oakfield Ledge, as we were engineering fiber optic lines on power poles that plunged over the edge along the appropriately named "Breakneck Road". Thanks for showing this formation in Wisconsin off to the world!
Thanks for watching, sometimes the beautiful formations such as this get overlooked so I thought I’d stray from the normal for a week to share! If you’re ever in the area, definitely worth a stop..fyi Horicon Marsh is one of our favorite stops during migrations!
Really cool Video Craig. Gorgeous location. Reminded me a little of my home county. I gotta do some more videos showing the area.
Check out the split bow arch video we did.
Thanks…was a little bit of a busy week that week so I thought I’d share some of that local beauty we tend to overlook!
Definitely will do!
So cool, some of the walls look manmade! I know they aren’t, but wow!
Right! It’s just so massive it’s hard to comprehend on video 😁
That's a great one, nice!
Thanks!
