Hi there! This video was taken in late September 2023. While it was my 3rd time in Japan, it was his first time so he was extremely stoked. It was booked on a whim - we only had a month's notice before we departed for our flight since that was the only moment we realized that both our schedules aligned which allowed us to spare a bit of time to unwind. We were initially expecting cooler temperatures since it was supposed to be the beginning of autumn but alas we were scorched by the lingering summer heat throughout the entire trip. Nonetheless, we had a blast, and we're definitely planning to return to Japan soon. - M

@@trailsandtails_mc Thank you po! Would it be hard for someone na first timer magjapan to try out train stations alone? How long were you guys in Japan and ideally, how much would be the budget if you're staying for 7-10 days?

    • @trailsandtails_mc

Surprisingly I've found out that Japan is a pretty good country for beginner travelers upon seeing what happened with C. I made him plan the itinerary of this entire trip, and I only gave some tips on how to make things more efficient. He was also the one who booked the hotels based on the places we wanted to go. I only did the itinerary on my non-negotiables: the amusement parks, and anything Harry Potter-related. For train stations, Google Maps and Navitime were our best friends. One of us would be armed with Navitime, and the other would handle Google Maps to double-check. They say two heads are better than one, but getting lost in train stations is inevitable. In case you get lost, and you don't know any Nihongo (Japanese), don't hesitate and use Google Translate to communicate with the station employees. We stayed for a total of 8 days in Japan. I made it a point to allot at least 180USD (10,000PHP) per person per day excluding the accommodation rate, flight tickets, shinkansen (bullet train) tickets, and pre-booked admission tickets and activities, so that was the actual amount of yen in cash that we packed for this trip. Any amount in excess was charged to our credit cards. That number is manageable for daily expenses such as food, transportation (trains and buses), shopping, and other spontaneous activities. I've seen travelers manage way below that number, but I believe that is already the sweet spot between budgeting and splurging. - M

After visiting both Nintendo Worlds in Japan and Hollywood, I feel that both parks are better in their own ways. In Japan, there is a lot more different activities to do, with more variety of different foods that are way better than Hollywood's Toadstool Cafe (Except for the Burgers, Hollywood does them better), they also have their own unique headbands which japan's headbands are better, while hollywood's shirts and hats are better. And rides like Mario Kart, compared to Hollywood, takes less time to line up for than in Hollywood. If you are lucky, you can get in to Japan's Nintendo World as early as 7:30am in the morning. However, unlike Hollywood, there are some days where you MUST book a Timed Entry Ticket (Virtual Line) in order to get to the park, and sometimes you must go to a specialized kiosk to book them. Meeting mascots (except Toad) is much stricter, due to the fact that unlike Hollywood, you are not allowed to have your phone to take pictures with mascots, you must stand in a specific position when you meet mascots, you must pose how the mascot poses for pictures, and you must pay 6000 yen for pictures. While in Hollywood, it's just you interacting with the mascot, the staff are allowed to use your phone for picture taking, and you are allowed to greet the mascots with how you like to greet them (plushies). When I met Peach in Japan, the line takes longer compared to Hollywood (30 minutes in Japan). And she would just interact with the staff member every time and only interact with me based on what the staff tells her to do for the first 30 seconds of the meet and greet to fill in that time. When I even tried to greet her with my plushies, she just ignores them. When I met Peach in Hollywood the line is way shorter (2-15 minutes), and she is even willing to get to know more of my different plushies, and with Toadette being her favourite, she would always be happy to hold her and hug her for the picture-taking. The meet and greet is straight to the point and no nonsense.

I have yet to enjoy Universal Hollywood's Nintendo cause during the few times I visited the park, Super Nintendo World wasn't officially launched yet. I'm looking forward to visiting Hollywood, and Orlando soon for the upcoming reveal of Orlando's Ministry of Magic ride. Did you purchase an Express Pass? We pre-purchased ours via their official ticketing site, but even with the Express Pass, it still took us more than an hour to queue for Koopa's Challenge as the line was still frustratingly long, and it moved at a snail's pace. If Hollywood's got a longer waiting time than Japan's then Express Passes are necessary, and the more popular rides like Mario Kart should be the priority as soon as the gates open. I heard that those who checked in at Universal Resort hotels and/or those who came with a tour group had some nice perks as they got first dibs before the park opened to the public. I agree that Hollywood is laxer than Japan. I think it's more of a cultural thing as Japan utilizes a rulebook approach to things in general. That and/or a combination of language barrier might've attributed to being unable to pursue artistic liberties during Meet and Greets. Oh no! Your poor plushies! If our cute plushies were ignored, I'd feel the same way. Thank you very much for your insightful comment! I'll keep that in mind and will try interacting with the cast members next time with our Gyuuun plushies so I can share my experience as well. - M

@@trailsandtails_mc no I didn't purchase an express pass, because I visited Universal before the schools in the US started having holidays. If you are visiting Universal when America's schools are having holidays, then yeah, you'll need an express pass. Off topic but I don't recommend going to the Mario Kart Ride in Hollywood between 11am - 1pm at any given day due to the fact that this is when the ride actually malfunctions for 1 hour, which in my experience, resulted in my waiting for over 3 hours to get in the ride on 2 separate occasions. I actually initially thought that Mario, Luigi and Peach in Japan will understand anything when a guest speaks English, but it turns out while the voice lines for the characters are in English, the suit actors for the mascots don't speak it at all. I remembered how when I was lining up for Mario and Luigi's Photo Opportunity in Japan, a Japanese guest and I agreed to help each other film the meet and greet. But unfortunately, the staff deliberately paired us both together and we had to buy our photos one by one. Yeah that aside tho, Hollywood's mascots are really willing to get to know different types of plushies too. Peach in Hollywood is much easier to interact with if you want to have her hold one or two plushies of yours when you take pictures with her.
