Inspector Wexford (Ruth Rendell) HD - A Guilty Thing Surprised (1988)/George Baker, Michael Jayston
I recall this as being very popular, and enjoyed it myself, during the 70's What I had forgotten was the snobbery, and that almost all the actors were, or felt a need to appear to be, insufferably middleclass pseudo intellectuals. That Patrick Campbell mocked Graham Hill for his speech was rich. That a nobody like the host, should commend mr Hill for his pronunciation of one word, then to describe his amusing description of why he made his choice of a correct word as "the best account in chinese he had ever heard" had not a shred of humor in it. I had had a mildly nostalgic view of the 'old' BBC, as how could one not viewing todays propagandist for the oligarchs, and sometime shelter for paedophiles. It seems it was always an unpleasant organisation.
Great to see this again, it doesn't date. We need quiz shows with more intelligence like this today but sadly it's all dumbed down and low intellect stuff that is nothing more than trivia. Thanks for putting this up it's so refreshing. I used to watch this every week back in the day.
What a wonderful tv personality Frank Muir was....
This is very precious...❤Loving the interactions,The trust, The Honesty...R.I.P. Michael Jayston.
Bonnie Langford improves with age, Nicola Bryant is still a strikingly beautiful lady, Michael Jayston seemed like a nice bloke, and Colin Baker is simply one of the most entertaining people I have ever seen.
I have fond memories of this like all the others but, having revisited this for a few hours now, I'm also gasping to hear an accent from anyone outside of the Home Counties. Everyone is so frightfully, awfully and terribly posh. Of course this is how the BBC was for many decades with 95% of the UK not represented. I thought the BBC was fantastic in the 1970s but actually it did do a disservice by creating an impression to the rest of the world that this is how anyone from Britain talks...simply because there's no variety to what we're hearing. On reflection this was a huge mistake. I'm also conscious of this as currently I'm watching a lot of documentaries from the 1950s made by a movement who called themselves 'Free Cinema". Lindsay Anderson was extremely vocal at the time about how the dominance of South East-centric locations, people and events in British cinema during the post-war period (prior to 1961, of course) was a complete misrepresentation of how life was for most of Britain. They tried to re-address it by making documentaries in Edinburgh, Yorkshire and Ireland....budget-allowing, of course. As we can see with Call By Bluff, by 1974, we STILL had a long way to go!!
Thank you so much for the interesting feedback! Not being a native English speaker, I can't have an opinion on this, but I just love the posh accents and I believe many actors weren't posh at all, they were working class, like Michael Jayston or Tom Baker, for example, only their voices and accents were patrician and posh, after so many years in the theatre. ❤
The lovely Hannah Gordon ❤❤
I knew Patrick Campbell was lying at 1:02:48 as it's the Northumberland town of Otterburn, not Otterbourne...mind you, it could be due to the blanket Southcentric nature of anyone on telly in those days! Maybe he just didn't know. If it's a genuine mistake it's a shame cos any mention of Otterburn on the BBC would've been, and still would be, a genuine pleasure for us millions in the North!! :)
Something very comforting about watching this, reminds me of a simpler time, at home watching TV with my parents and siblings!
So many lovely ladies in these series
Thanks for uploading these videos it’s much appreciated my family will watch them all great memories 😊
You're very welcome! Happy to read this. 🥰
Robert powell was still very a bachelor here😂
I wish i could budge this thought I keep having....do they have the 'word' written somewhere small on the back of the card, facing the panellist who picks it out? So they know they have the right one. Even if (as more likely) they simply have the cards in the order in which they come up at the beckon of Robinson's bell, it would be a precarious job to set out all the bluff cards and true cards with the right panellist. I imagine SURELY they had full rounds where, when it came to picking out the card, they sometimes (if not often) put the wrong card in the wrong order or with the wrong panellist... As I say I wish I could budge this thought!! Sorry to lumber YOU with it now. :)
Nerys is SO jealous of Diane's hairdo.
And an extra point for being so clever! Would that it were Felicity, would that it were.
Wouldn't it be great to hire Robert Robinson and have him visit one's home to be commentator and continuity announcer while playing a board game one evening at Christmastime!
Sir Roger Ascham wrote a book on Archery in the 16th Century.
I realize this show was taped in a bygone era, with different morals etc but sir David H is bit of a creep, it seems to me. A xenophobe and a sexist. Oh well.
Michael Jayston's voice. He'd say the words BEECHAM'S POWDERS on the advert with all the power and conviction he would for a Shakespearean play.
❤❤❤
Fifty years on and I STILL get stressed and worried when they have to do a hurried round in the last couple of minutes. Ha ha.
Robinson's poetic introductions and outroductions are bordering upon Carrollesque nonsense. Patrick Campbell is a card taken swiftly from the bottom of a pack? Eh? What the fellup does he mean? :)
The ladies were so lovely and intelligent. The whole show was a reminder of what once was. I’m afraid good manners and wit have gone by the wayside
Ah, those wonderful bygone days when Frank Muir could drop the N-bomb and no one batted an eye. In all seriousness, how has that word ever been acceptable?

Yes a better time no internet, mobile phones or hundred, thousand channels. So much simpler then.

I always wondered who made up the Bluffs. Was it the participants, or was it written for them?
Thanks so much for loading these, they are absolute bliss. ;D
You're very welcome! Happy to hear this.
I agree with Barry, The Omen is a movie about the rise of the Anti-Christ. Although Richard Donner wanted to believe it was also a movie about a couple going insane, it doesn't play out like that. It's not anything more than what you see - a movie about the devil.
I kind of love that these episodes are so long ago that the descriptor for a Muslim is a “Mohommadan”. And it is simply a descriptor. A much more innocent and gracious time.
Love Barry's dry wit.
Wow so civil and all white
Sadly, Joss Ackland and Simon Ward are no longer alive
thankyou thankyou 🙂 x
You're very welcome! 🙂🤗 🥰
I can't believe Frank Muir managed to get Berkley Hunt in there!
And the n word.
What ever happened to the days of cultured, articulate and beautiful people appearing on television. Better and happier times for Britain.
loved this show, BBC2 9pm F A B
So this is basically the original "would i lie to you" kind of, good show.
My dad loved this show, especially Frank and Arthur.
Kate is smoking hot 🔥
Penelope Keith is actually Harry Kane's mum.

UK panel shows have the most amazing pedigree. From My word and My music to Just a minute and I'm sorry I haven't a clue. Just interesting people saying interesting things and not shouting at each other. Long live the English language
