Thank you for making and posting this video. I am ashamed of the human race that after 4 years there are only 152 views...and this is the first video that pops up with a search "How to help a homeless person food toiletries". I recently realized that there is a young man (20-22yo?) living in a small, unused half-walled structure designed to have a large commercial dumpster. Its at the end of a small, 4-business "strip mall", but two of the businesses are unoccupied. I walk my dog past this every day in tbe late morning. I could see him as i glanced through the small gaps in the vertical wood joins. Of course, i dod not want to embarrass him and continued to walk. That 8'X8' area has been unused for the entire yearthat ive been living nearby,but im unsure of how long he hasbeen there. For various reasons, i do suspect he's been there for at least 8 months. I atarted leaving a bag with food, ice andcokd srinks once a day. I teied to imagine what someone in this position might need immediately (I'm a single, older woman who is juggling my own basic needs -- my utilities are late, rwnt us behind). I went to a nearby Dollar Tree and was able to take baby wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste and a few dry goods, like crackers, nuts, chips, eyc. Every morning, i heat up whatever i ate thenight before and package it with a 32oz block of ice (i freeze big gulp plastic cups of water), and i found individual fruit cups and pudding on a clearance of 4 for $1. I left a deck of cards and a variety of paperbacks hoping it would help him pass the time. I have left a small amount of money (4-6 dollars each week -wish i could do more). It has been nearly 100°F where i live and dont know how he manages in that enclosed space. i have a rechargeable fan thathas a neck strap but i dont know how he'd charge it if i leave it. I have keft a couple of dollars when i can spare it. Ive never made contact nor seen his face. I do believe he maybe suffering from a serious mental health issue because he is not only living in the little area, he's at least urinaring in it (the amell is almist overpowering). Tomorrow, im going to leave a pen and paperwoth a note asking that if he'd likw me to let someone inhis family know he is okay or if hed like me to mail a letter, toleave it between theqoodsn slats and i will do so. My question is (and im struggling to decide), if i should or should not report him toan agency. My intuition tells me that he could be a young man who stopped taking his medication and that his family may be looking for him. On the otherhand, if that's not the case, I don't know that he'd do any better getting arrested (loitering?) and whatever horror that might bring. I see absolutely no sign of alcohol or drugs. So, trying to get an indigent rehab isnot something onmy radar although i do know of one. Can anyone comment with advice?

Thank you for the explanation. I've always wondered about this, and the reasons you gave make so much sense now that I think about it. Like, duh! who doesn't have a phone these days, it's like not having an arm or a leg or something you really depend upon in this day and age. If you don't mind answering this question, I am curious as to how homeless people can afford to pay phone bills, or do they just use a public Wi-Fi, and connect with family and friends through those fake phone number apps?

Homelessness isn't shocking in California. It's the norm. It's what's expected. The more homeless people there are in California, the "better" they're doing. I mean, My God - how else can you measure the "success" of a state?

Ask what the homeless need before giving it to them instead of assuming what they need. Please keep in mind that the homeless are cautious about people giving them food because some horrible people have done awful things to the food that are gross or detrimental to the person's health and well being. Also keep in mind that they have to be cautious about food poisoning too. If someone just ate they can't hold onto a sandwich with mayonnaise on it to eat five hours later. They also can't bring food back to the shelter with them. It's not allowed inside. So they will show gratefulness that you gave them food but as soon as your back is turned that food is going into the garbage. Also keep in mind that the person who you are helping might have a place where they can cook. So helping them to get groceries will stretch the money you give them further or you can give them a prepaid grocery card. On top of that if you can point them in the direction of an easy job that they can get that could be appreciated. Market Research Interviewer jobs are easy to get, although not stable work, can be a good start. Telemarketing jobs might be easy to get too they might not need experience to get the job.

I miss my dogs, this is the second time around and it's so hard to do this without them. We made it through together the first time. We were a team!

Je ne sais pas si vous avez ça en Europe, au Québec les McDo ont des collants sur les cafés et les boissons chaudes et dès qu’on a rempli les 7 coches sur le carton on a un café gratuit. Moi je les collectionne, je les mets dans mon portefeuille et je trouve que c’est pratique à donner et c’est mieux que de donner de l’argent.

I'm homeless and I have a dog. My dog is a service dog I have a brain injury. She Is a Boston Terrier and she's the most beautiful thing you've ever seen. This dog has quite literally saved my life. I lived in the shelter for a little bit and she was able to live with me. Organizations I know of are nomadic Critters they help with medical care. And PAW to hand they can help with food for your pet. I would also like to add that would never hit my dog. Anyone who knows me and my dog knows I take very good care of my dog.

Great video. I would add that dogs provide protection as well. Even the smallest dogs can alter their owner of danger. Unconditional love, warmth, nonjudgmental... these pets add a normalcy to homeless' daily life.
