Modernist Fish: Episode 2 - Jordan Peterson? Lunatic, Liar, or Believer
Episode 2 of the Modernist Fish podcast (grainofwheat.substack.com/podcast) is about Jordan Peterson and how Christians ought to relate to him and to his work.
This is the audio version of the show. You can watch the original video version on Rumble at rumble.com/c/c-7040750 or on UA-cam here:
Several diatribes against Jordan Peterson have been published online recently, bringing new criticism against the otherwise conservative favorite. Who is he? Why, given that his work seems very Christian and he has brought many people back to Christ, does Jordan himself not seem to believe? Is Jordan lying to himself or the world? Is he a lunatic in some way or another, and incomprehensible to others and to himself? Or is Jordan on his way to becoming a Christian? But what’s holding him back? We're going to look into Jordan's philosophy and his wrestling with his own faith to determine how Christians should wrestle with and relate to Jordan's work and other similar popular (and controversial) public intellectuals.

We're all moderns in a modernist world, swamped and distracted from the truth by secularism, "the deep state", the "deep church" and more. And so, we have to put in extra effort to relearn how to live a fully traditional Christian life again. James Green and Tim Dominik are two such "modernist fish" here to journey with you on this process of relearning. Here, we'll discuss theology, philosophy, free will, Catholic spiritual life, politics, history, and more in conversations sure to be full of hot takes, wild claims, and how to see the world as it really is, which is most definitely not what the world has been telling you it is.
This is the podcast accompaniment to the Grain of Wheat Substack at grainofwheat.substack.com and conversations will often parallel or accompany written pieces from the site, with audio versions of selected articles also to be made available on this podcast feed.
Oh, and also just like our Substack page, everything somehow relates to John 12:24!

I submitted my initial comments before I listened to Episode 2. As I was listening to your observations and conclusions I was struck by the similarities in our comments. Before listening to your presentation as I was formulating my comments, I was concerned that what I was intending to say may have had a little too much point on it. But after hearing your running monologue and the bits of the two interviews you shared; I now believe my assessments were pretty much spot on and so I'll conclude with you this. I believe that Jordan Peterson is a Trojan horse, a detriment, an element of confusion that adds nothing of necessary value to the actual Christian community.

So, I'll jump in to the rabbit hole. Firstly, to my ear there seems to be something amiss with the audio in this episode. I can't tell if it's the host voice or something else. Whatever the cause, it's crackly with a volume oscillation. Now to the particular thoughts I feel obliged to share concerning Jordan Peterson. I first became acquainted with from videos on YT of him teaching at university pertaining to issues of freedom of speech, progressive ideology and his conflict with university administration and province politicians. I was intrigued because I had no idea at that time that Canadian government had become so intrusive and restrictive. It didn't take long to realize that there was a lot of JP videos of various types on YT. JP teaching psychology classes, debating, giving interviews, making arguments with university officials and politicians and just riffing about societal ills. But then after having seen a lot of his speaking about generally secular issues, I found his now well known video wherein he calls out yhe church (whatever he thought that was at the time ) and tells young men to go to church. This was very surprising because I was familiar with him being a secularist and atheistic. Shortly after, I found the video in which; with tears in his eyes, he says something to the effect that he no longer believes that there is no God. Apparently something very positive had happened with his wife who been battling cancer and she had experienced something that she attributed to God. It wasn't long after that he began presenting videos in which he would share his thoughts about his seeming spiritual awakening. So, that's a good thing right; where's the problem? I have heard JP talk about his wife's faith and how that has spurred his faith but I have yet to hear him share anything about his own belief in salvation through and into Jesus Christ. He uses a lot of "Christianesque language" but always seem to stop short of professing the atoning work of Jesus on his cross as being the means of Jordan's reconciliation to God. Obviously I don't know the exact nature of JP's relationship with God but there are things that I can say about JP. He is an intellectual. He has a lot of confidence in his intellect. His personality; indeed his personhood is heavily invested in his intellect. He is in demand. Many people are impressed with him. People often refer and deffer to him as an expert regarding matters of psychology and sociallogiy. Jordan has received the attention, adulation and laudets of a lot of people. Here is my concern. Over the last couple of years Jordan has been presenting himself as a Bible scripture teacher; expositing in error by super imposing humanistic, psychoanalytic method on the text. Unfortunately for Jordan and anyone that might listen to him; his interpretations are not even close. They are completely errant. It's obvious that he is operating in the same old way; I'll just relate to God and the things of God through my mind. I'm smart; I don't need anyone else's help. I'll figure it out. Apparently he still doesn't know that there are principles; baseline understandings that must be applied when expositing Biblical scripture if you want to arrive at the truth. Jordan Peterson is in no way qualified to teach anyone Biblical truth including himself. It should be recognized that he fits exactly the very definition of a false teacher. I'm sure he thinks he's right but he knows just enough to be a stumbling block to the naive and himself.

Lunatic? yes. Liar? yes. Believer? No, but he isnt an atheist. He's a heretic, a gnostic occultist.

I can see that, but he isn't necessarily lost. Let's pray, like John Rich did in that interview that he does find his way. His wife made it. It obviously makes him uneasy showing that he is thinking. The Holy Spirit is knocking on the door of his heart. Let's pray that he answers.

@modernistfish I admire your optimism but I think he's far beyond the pale. Just look at how often and in what terms he talks about the Devil and Hell. I think he's more than obsessed. False prophets, wolves in sheep's clothing, and perverters of scripture (all of which JP is, arguably) are not making it into the kingdom of heaven. While you wait for him to have a total change of heart, he is milking Christians for their money and attention all the while seeping out his heretical views which are slowly becoming more mainstream. He talks a lot about the divine spark, for example, which is a glaringly gnostic idea, and recently I have heard pastors who like JP bring it up in sermons. In ages past, the church would have had people like Peterson burned at the stake, precisely for this pernicious effect he has.
