Halo CE just has the best gameplay. So fast, so aggressive, so arcadey. It feels like an evolution of shooters like Doom but then also kind of being its own thing (the enemy AI, more methodical pace, shield system, two-weapon system, the open environments, and weapon design still gives it its own identity) I just miss shooters when they were about the core combat loop. Just having really good action and making you feel like a badass. I feel like modern shooters, like "looter shooters" like Destiny or whatever open-world co-op game that is out right now, they can't compare to classics like Halo. You look at Destiny and its just you taking a corner of the room and shooting at stationary enemies (or even just a stationary boss target). You have lots of weapons and while I haven't played a lot of it to really judge, it just feels like you use one gun for the job and most "guns" have you taking out enemies in the same exact way, there really isn't a lot of strategy (like guns have different "effects" but the way you use them is the same) Halo was just like, peak enemy design and peak gunplay. A good mix of reaction times and strategy. Has level design that makes you think. It's all simple stuff, but like it's surprising how many games _don't_ have that anymore. Halo has such good moving and shooting and like you think games would've gotten better from this, but for the most part they haven't
