West Fork, Tuckasegee
West Fork of the Tuckasegee. Class IV+
Dam release was 250cfs.
July 6th 2024
Personal first descent
Due to a storm the night before, local boaters that have paddled the river before believed the release was up to 100cfs more to lower the lake levels. Multiple locals said the river was probably at 350cfs. Additionally this storm knocked down many new trees that made for additional hazards.
West Fork of the Tuck only releases 10 times per year making it a rare river to get the opportunity to paddle. However this also makes it a very challenging river because new wood could be in play and rapids are ever changing so each trip is different. This trip turned into a first descent style voyage with local boaters leading us down and scouting everything for wood. The trip was intense and high anxiety. This is the hardest/most dangerous river I have done in my paddling career thus far. Looking back I had a blast, I hope to return and run some of the rapids I portaged.

    Yeah the crux was a tricky line with all the wood, I was important to keep good speed in the last hole and punch left. We had two people in our crew walk it.

    That was my friend with the pitoned antix and dad with the broken paddle, lol. We still don't know exactly what my friend pitoned on, and my dad's paddle broke right about where you see him swimming at mini-gorge, I suspect his blade got pinched in some rocks. Crux was definitely pretty dirty that day, with the amount of wood in there and the higher flow. Normally the rapid is much more straight-forward. For the paddle - I traded my dad and single-bladed out from mini-gorge, which turned out to be pretty fun. Also - it's a long drive, but you should check out BeaverFest in NY.

      Think I may have talked to you at the take out. Blue hot whip? I didn’t even realize there was somebody in the middle of the river at mini gorge until I watched the playback, wasn’t sure what was going on there. At the time I was so juiced I was just worried about myself lol.. makes sense now tho because I do remember a crew debating carrying the blue rewind out of the gorge. West fork tuck was sick, glad I was out there with you guys, probably my biggest stout so far, maybe next time I can get the crux too. Relatively new boater (2 yrs paddling whitewater) still have a lot of rivers to get checked off… Beaver fest looks wild and is on my radar. Wanting to get gauley fest checked off the list too. I’m in Arkansas though so they are both a journey.

    • @projex48
      @projex48 Місяць тому

      Yup, that's me! Pending the wood is cleaned up the next time you visit, I'd definitely say to go for the crux. When the line isn't effed up there's normally a crew there making sure everyone gets out of the hole alright. I actually haven't been to gauley myself, I will probably make it out there this year though. If you make it out to gauley, make sure to get some pepperoni rolls somewhere along the way.

    Looks like a fun run! One thing consider widening your hands on the paddle shaft out to the bent section. Don't be a close gripper.

    • @jackkayak
      @jackkayak Місяць тому

      I find the werner bent shaft position to be a couple inches too wide. Especially if the blades are small like the freestyle paddle he’s using, a slightly narrower grip gives more leverage and allows for more vertical, optimal strokes. It appears he’s paddling an OG which is extremely wide, so every bit more blade he can get in water helps.

    Not to diminish your accomplishment because its still a rough, even modestly dangerous rapid but it has been pretty well accepted that at low water, and anything under 1000 would definitely fit this category, Pine Creek is a IV+ at most. I make this comment not to be an armchair expert but to keep the beta realistic so any viewers can more accurately gauge this drop against their own skill levels. Really you need to start seeing 1,500+ cfs for this to resemble class V by modern standards. Even Colorado Rivers & Creeks ("the Bible" of Colorado whitewater) agrees with me and it first came out in the 90s

      Yeah, not a lot of people admit swimming, but it happens a lot. I’m glad your bud is ok. My swim, well, it’s my favorite section of clear creek, also a meat grinder. It really hurt, and paid for lack of speed. I teach newer boaters speed is your friend, because it is. Anyways, good to just have lighthearted fun watch non-consequential swims.

    This is actually a really impressive fight for your first time swimming. You are doing way too much up top, blindly paddling hard and praying one of your strokes is timed to boof is not a strategy. Set your angle take maybe one stroke on the way in to keep your boat on line, plant the lefty, build pressure and lean forward as you pull your stroke. Never pull a boof stroke until you can see your landing. Sorry for the unsolicited advice.

    • @sighman_
      @sighman_ Рік тому

      All good, Still working on perfecting the boof and remembering to actually do it. We scouted the drop and had a game plan and knew what to do. When it actually came game time though the adrenaline was flowing and I just didn’t execute correctly.
