Make The Break, 46th Anniversary

Well, here is a 46-year backstory. I joined The Steve Brown Band in 1973, aged 16, and gradually became a more accomplished drummer on the road and in the studio until it broke up in 1977. The Steve Brown Band existed before and after, but my tenure was with the second incarnation, from 1973-1977. All music was original, and certainly not uncomplicated. This piece, “Make the Break”, entered to ...

Mellow!
I was hugely impressed by the Squad from the first time I saw them live in the northeast and after that would make sure I saw them if I could. They were a cut above, musically, way better than anything else you could see on a regional level probably anywhere, though perhaps some of the other elements needed to make it properly big weren't there, I wouldn't know. It was a confused period with a lot of bands stretching stylistically to tick the boxes on the daft checklists of the then all-powerful music press and I think The Squad to some extent fell into that trap, but then again so did the Police and it didn't hurt them. Anyway, Stu Burns (RIP) in particular was a revelation at the time. His playing was mature and extremely polished without sacrificing any excitement, up there with the nationally known players. His live sound was exceptional, totally top drawer, which is maybe not so surprising given that he was an amp builder and repairer and a guitar tech. I got to meet him a couple of times when he fixed my old Vox AC30 and did some work on a Strat I owned, we had a chat and cup of tea at his house, nice fella. I had the album that this track is from. For what was essentially (apparently) a home recording in those days (1978/9 ish) the album was a heroic effort but imho it fell a bit short sound-wise and didn't really capture the band's live impact, or the subtleties of their playing.
Very cool Jeffery the Barak :)
アンディ・テイラーがカバーしたの、このバンドがオリジナルだったのね。
Yes, thank you. I still have not heard the Andy Taylor version. I have since come to know the producer, Steve Thompson via Facebook.
オリジナルはロックテイストですが、元デュランデュランのアンディ・テイラー・バージョンは、オールディーズタイプのロックンロール風にアレンジしてますね。 お聴きになられましたか? You Tubeにもアップされてますよ。
@@0097bobchan Thanks for the tip! I have never heard it. I will look for it now. Jeffrey
Good, but not quite as good as the drummer from Magenta Fuzz....
Lovely
Used to watch this band regularly in Newcastle. They were great live. Stu Burns dad made Burns guitars
Hi Michael. Either I did not know that, or more likely I had forgotten. Burns guitars. How about that.
I don't think Jim Burns was Stu's dad. Stu Burns worked as a miner in the north east in his youth, which is unlikely if his father was forging ahead with a nationally known business based in the south.
Remember SBB, great band,
Impressive music, love the drums.
Fantastic! ❤️
